For a conventional mesh wireframe, start with Three.js WireframeGeometry rendered by LineSegments. For large static scenes, consolidate line data that shares material and visibility behavior, and avoid unnecessary geometry groups. Then measure draw calls, line primitives, and frame time on the workload that matters. If the design requires thick lines, use the wide-line addons LineSegments2 and LineMaterial, after confirming compatibility with your renderer and installed Three.js version.
Start with the right line representation
Thin mesh-edge wireframes
For ordinary mesh edges, WireframeGeometry creates a line representation from a BufferGeometry. Render it with LineSegments, as in the Three.js WireframeGeometry example:

const wireframe = new THREE.WireframeGeometry(mesh.geometry);
const lines = new THREE.LineSegments(
wireframe,
new THREE.LineBasicMaterial({ color: 0xffffff })
);
scene.add(lines);
This is a straightforward choice when standard thin lines meet the visual requirement. The documentation example also demonstrates transparency and disabling depth writes for a translucent overlay; those are visual choices, not general performance optimizations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCustom line data
For lines that do not simply represent a mesh’s edges, use BufferGeometry attributes to store the position data and other vertex attributes in buffers. Build the representation around the segments you actually need to show rather than assuming that converting a mesh to a wireframe is always the best fit.

Reduce submission overhead without losing needed behavior
Each independently managed object can retain useful behavior: its own transform, visibility, picking, or update cycle. Keep objects separate when the scene depends on those capabilities. If many line objects are static and share material and visibility behavior, combining compatible positions into fewer geometry objects is a reasonable batching strategy to investigate.
Batching is an implementation choice, not a documented promise of a particular speedup. The likely benefit is fewer object-level submissions; the trade-off is reduced ability to treat the original objects independently. Compare the result in your own scene using draw-call counters and frame time.

Use geometry groups only when they represent a real distinction
Three.js documents that BufferGeometry groups are rendered in separate draw calls. Use groups when different materials or rendering separation require them, not as a free organizational label. Likewise, indexed geometry can reuse vertices for triangle data, but whether indexing helps a line representation depends on how its segments are encoded; profile both forms rather than assuming it will.

Choose wide lines only when the design needs them
Standard LineSegments is sufficient for ordinary thin lines. When line width must be adjustable, Three.js provides the addon LineSegments2 with LineMaterial. The LineSegments2 documentation describes arbitrary line width and width in world units.
By default, LineMaterial.linewidth is measured in CSS pixels. With worldUnits enabled, width is instead measured in world units. For screen-space widths, the viewport resolution must be current; the visible LineSegments2 object updates it in onBeforeRender. See the LineMaterial documentation for the material behavior.

These addons have renderer-specific module paths. The docs distinguish WebGL and WebGPU support, and Wireframe has a WebGPU counterpart. Check the documentation and import path for the exact renderer and Three.js release deployed by your app; do not copy an addon path across renderer types without verifying compatibility. The Wireframe documentation describes the addon and renderer-specific use.
Profile the actual workload
Use renderer.info.render.calls to inspect draw calls and renderer.info.render.lines to inspect rendered line primitives. These are diagnostic counters, not performance scores or universal thresholds. A high call count can point to object batching as an avenue to test; a high line count can prompt a closer look at edge density, visibility, or whether every detail needs to be rendered. Neither counter alone tells you how fast the scene feels.

By default, renderer info counters reset for each render. In an app with postprocessing or other multiple render passes, collect totals across the full frame by disabling automatic resets and resetting after all passes:
renderer.info.autoReset = false;
function renderFrame() {
// Render the scene and all additional passes.
renderer.info.reset();
}
Place the reset after the complete frame so the counters can represent the next frame’s aggregate work. The WebGLRenderer documentation covers the counters and multipass handling.
Compare one change at a time
- Record draw calls, line primitives, and frame time for a representative scene and interaction state.
- Change one major factor, such as consolidating compatible static line geometry or switching to a wide-line representation.
- Repeat under representative browsers, GPUs, viewport sizes, and interaction states, then compare both visual output and frame time.
The official API documentation describes these APIs but does not establish a universal speedup or benchmark. A lower call count or different line representation is not, by itself, evidence that the scene will render faster on every device.
