Optimize real-time voice by measuring the whole conversation path—not by chasing one codec setting or a universal latency number. Track connection setup, media round-trip time (RTT), jitter, packet loss, and user-visible interruptions together; then tune packet duration, bitrate, loss protection, and routing against the conditions your users actually encounter.
What performance means in a real-time voice app
Voice feels responsive when audio arrives consistently and participants can take turns without awkward pauses. A low average delay alone does not guarantee that experience: connection setup can be slow, media RTT can fluctuate, packets can arrive unevenly or be lost, and an app can respond poorly when someone interrupts or begins speaking.

Separate setup time from the ongoing media path. Measure how long it takes to establish a usable connection, then observe media behavior during the call. OpenAI’s engineering account describes fast connection setup alongside low, stable media RTT, jitter, and packet loss as requirements for crisp turn-taking in its own system (OpenAI, May 4, 2026). That is an account of one system’s requirements, not a universal latency target.

Collect network metrics alongside outcomes a caller can notice. ETSI’s report on testing OTT conversational voice treats combined packet-loss or frame-erasure measures as relevant to perceived quality, reinforcing the need to look beyond a single average (ETSI TR 103 559).

- Omnidirectional Microphone - It is not a Speaker or Speakerphone, it is a condenser microphone. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern with a pickup distance of 11.5 ft, making it easy to capture the most subtle sounds from 360° directions and transmit the sound more loud and clear. Participants can hear each other without raising their voices.
- Made for Conferences - This microphone is perfect for small or medium meetings over an internet network by using Skype/GoToMeeting/WebEx/Hangouts/Fuze/VoIP/Zoom and other softwares. You can also use it for court reports, seminars, remote training, business negotiations, video chats, etc.
- Plug & Play, No Drivers Required - The microphone is compatible with all operating systems - both Windows and macOS. You just need to plug the microphone to start recording. If there is no response after inserting the mic, please go to the microphone setting of your computer and select the mic as the INPUT device.
- Convenient Mute Button - Quickly mute/unmute your microphone. The built-in blue indicator light for checking whether the USB microphone is working.
- Well Designed Cable - The microphone is constructed of sturdy and metal material and the base is fitted with an anti-slip mat which keeps it stable on desktop during use. It is small, convenient and does not require much space when in use. Connected with a 1.8m nylon shielded wire, it effectively eliminates signal interferences to achieve the best recording results.
- Connection setup: Time from starting a call or session to usable two-way audio.
- Media RTT and stability: Record typical values and variation, not just a call-wide average.
- Jitter and packet loss: Track how often media arrives late or fails to arrive.
- Audio outcomes: Record pauses, clipping, distortion, missing speech, and delays when a participant tries to barge in.
- Context: Segment results by geography, network type, client, and call conditions where telemetry allows.
Use these measurements to find where a change helps and where it creates a trade-off. For example, a configuration that reduces packet overhead may still perform poorly if it makes each lost packet more damaging.
Choose packet duration for your latency and network profile
Opus supports frame durations of 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 ms; packets can combine frames up to 120 ms. Longer durations send fewer packets per second, reducing IP, UDP, and RTP header overhead, but they also add latency and mean a lost packet can erase a larger span of audio.
In RFC 6716, Definition of the Opus Audio Codec, the IETF says, “For this reason, 20 ms frames are a good choice for most applications.” The RFC also notes that coding-efficiency gains become small above 20 ms. Treat 20 ms as a useful starting point, not a guarantee: test alternatives against your app’s delay, bandwidth, and loss conditions.

Chunking advice is also implementation-specific. Google recommends 20–40 ms chunks for its Live API (Google Live API guidance); that guidance should not be generalized to every voice application.
Adapt bitrate and packetization when the network is congested
Available bandwidth is not constant across users or even across a single call. RFC 7587 describes Opus target bitrate as adjustable and explains that packet duration affects transmission overhead. The WebRTC guidance in RFC 8834 warns endpoints against sending substantially more data than the network path can support, because congestion can produce loss and delay spikes.
Monitor congestion and adjust bitrate or packetization rather than assuming the path has fixed capacity. The appropriate balance depends on what your application can tolerate: more bandwidth may help preserve audio quality, while oversending can worsen the conditions that make audio choppy.

Use FEC when the added redundancy helps
Forward error correction (FEC) can improve resilience, but it costs bandwidth and does not repair every loss pattern. RFC 8854 recommends using FEC when network conditions warrant it or when the application requests it. Opus in-band FEC can include a lower-bitrate copy of important speech information in a subsequent packet, helping when an individual packet is lost; it cannot fully recover every sequence of multiple consecutive losses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEvaluate FEC on the affected paths: compare intelligibility and interruption outcomes with the additional redundancy cost. Enabling it everywhere without regard to network conditions is not established as a best practice.
Use thresholds as diagnostics, not universal pass criteria
Twilio’s Voice SDK documentation lists RTT under 200 ms, jitter under 30 ms, and packet loss under 3% as guidance for reasonable audio quality. It also lists default Opus bandwidth of 40 kbps in each direction. These are Twilio’s vendor-specific recommendations and defaults; the documentation page’s publication date is not stated, and the figures are not universal acceptance criteria (Twilio Voice SDK network connectivity recommendations).

Connection setup and the route media takes can matter as much as codec tuning. OpenAI’s May 4, 2026 account describes changes to its WebRTC stack involving connection setup, stateful ICE/DTLS session ownership, and global routing intended to keep first-hop latency low. The company cited more than 900 million weekly active users as context for its infrastructure requirements; that is a company-reported scale figure, not an independent market statistic.

Teams using managed infrastructure can evaluate a provider’s edge-selection options and network guidance; Twilio documents these for its Voice SDK. Teams operating their own media path have different control and operational responsibilities. The available evidence does not establish that managed or self-operated infrastructure is faster for every application.

Compare changes across the trade-offs that matter
There is no single codec setting or hosting arrangement shown to win for every voice application. When comparing implementation options, include:
- Conversational delay and stability: Does the change improve setup and keep media delivery consistent?
- Quality at constrained bandwidth: Does speech remain intelligible without oversending?
- Jitter and loss behavior: How does audio degrade under the conditions seen by users?
- Bandwidth overhead: What do packet frequency and any FEC redundancy add?
- CPU and complexity: What additional client or service work does the configuration require?
- Operational control, geographic reach, and cost: What can your team tune and monitor, and what infrastructure does it need to run?
Change one factor at a time where practical, and compare results using the same call conditions and user-facing measures. That makes it easier to distinguish a real improvement from a trade-off that merely moves the problem.
