How to Optimize PC Game Graphics for Smooth Performance Without Max Settings

A practical, game-by-game method to improve smoothness without defaulting to the lowest preset or maxing every graphics setting.

You can make a PC game feel smoother without setting every option to Low—or chasing the highest possible frame rate. The reliable approach is to measure performance in a representative scene, change one group of graphics settings at a time, and keep each change only if the frame pacing improves without making the image unacceptable.

Start with a performance target and a repeatable test

Decide what matters most: steadier gameplay, making useful use of your display’s refresh rate, or preserving visual detail. There is no universal best preset because each game and PC combination has different options and performance costs.

  1. Choose a gameplay segment. Use a representative stretch of play, not a static menu. Repeat the same scene or route before and after a change so the comparison is meaningful.
  2. Record performance and image quality. If available, note average FPS and frame-time behavior, and watch for stutter during movement. Also check details that matter to you, such as moving edges, shadows, reflections, and small interface text.
  3. Change one category at a time. Try a setting change, replay the segment, and compare. Avoid changing several options at once: otherwise, you will not know which adjustment helped or which one made the image worse.

Average FPS alone does not show every hitch. AMD’s Radeon Game Advisor, where supported, can report average FPS, 95th-percentile frame time, and frame-time graphs while you play. Its measurements are specific to the game and system being monitored, not a guarantee of what another PC will achieve. AMD’s Game Advisor documentation describes its reporting and support limits.

Which graphics settings should you adjust first?

Begin with the game’s own preset or its advanced rendering options, then make targeted changes based on what you see. The names and effects of settings differ between games, so treat a preset as a starting point rather than a universal answer.

  • 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
  • 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
  • Advanced effects: Test demanding options such as ray-traced effects, shadows, or ambient occlusion if the game offers them. Lowering an effect can reduce visual detail, so judge the result in motion rather than assuming the lowest setting is best.
  • Textures: Texture resolution affects surface detail. Compare it separately from lighting or shadow changes, because the visible trade-off is different.
  • Antialiasing: Compare edge smoothness and clarity while moving. Available methods and their costs depend on the game.

NVIDIA’s Control graphics guide illustrates why advice should be game-specific: it discusses that title’s ray tracing, shadows, ambient occlusion, texture resolution, and antialiasing rather than prescribing a setting recipe for every game. NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide is an example, not a universal ranking of settings.

Try render scale or resolution if the game still struggles

Render scale changes the resolution at which the game renders its image; lowering it can improve performance, but may make the picture less crisp. Lowering the display resolution is another option. Test either change on the same gameplay segment, paying particular attention to clarity while moving and to interface text.

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

There is no single ideal resolution or render scale for every game and system. AMD lists reducing render scale or display resolution among possible Game Advisor recommendations, but those suggestions depend on the monitored game and hardware. AMD’s documentation explains the feature’s recommendations.

Compare upscaling options, starting with the game’s own

If the game includes an upscaler, test its available quality modes before relying on a driver or operating-system feature. Compare moving details and interface text as well as performance; results depend on the title and PC. Keep the mode that gives you an acceptable balance.

Driver GPU upscaling and Windows Auto SR are not interchangeable with a game-integrated option, and their compatibility differs:

  • NVIDIA GPU upscaling: NVIDIA documents GPU upscaling for supported graphics APIs at resolutions at or below the display’s native resolution. Check the driver documentation and your game’s API and display setup before relying on it. NVIDIA’s GPU upscaling documentation describes the feature.
  • Windows Auto SR: This is limited to eligible hardware running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, and it does not support every game or graphics API. Microsoft lists exclusions including DirectX 9, Vulkan, and OpenGL; consult its current requirements before troubleshooting a game that does not qualify. Microsoft’s Auto SR FAQ gives the eligibility details.

Use frame caps, VSync, and VRR for different purposes

These controls affect how frames are delivered; they do not substitute for tuning graphics quality. A frame cap limits how many frames the game renders, VSync coordinates presentation with display refresh, and variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adapt its refresh rate to the frame rate being shown.

  • Frame cap: Consider a cap when the game is rendering more frames than you need. AMD says its Frame Rate Target Control can reduce GPU power use, heat, and fan noise in applicable fullscreen use. NVIDIA also provides a maximum frame-rate setting. Availability and behavior depend on the GPU, driver, and game. AMD’s Frame Rate Target Control guidance and NVIDIA’s driver feature documentation describe their respective controls.
  • VSync: If you want to change synchronization, check the game’s graphics settings. AMD’s guidance says that for DirectX and Vulkan games, synchronization is controlled in-game. AMD’s VSync guidance explains this distinction.
  • VRR: This requires a display and configuration that support it. Microsoft describes VRR as allowing a compatible monitor to adjust refresh rate based on the frame rate of the displayed image. Microsoft’s DirectX Developer Blog explains the feature.

Check Windows settings only when they apply

Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations are intended for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless modes. They are not a universal performance switch, and toggling the option requires restarting the game. Microsoft’s windowed-game optimization guidance covers supported games and the setting.

On a PC with more than one GPU, Windows’ per-app graphics preference may also matter if a game is using the wrong adapter. This is a configuration check for multi-GPU systems, not a graphics-quality adjustment. Microsoft’s graphics preference instructions explain how to set an app’s preference.

Keep only changes that improve your experience

Replay the same scene after each adjustment. Keep a change if gameplay feels steadier and the visual trade-off is acceptable; revert it if the image becomes distracting or performance does not improve. The official guidance cited here does not establish a cross-game FPS gain for any particular setting change, so judge the result on your own game and system.
