For most conventional ATX and micro-ATX PCs, start with filtered front or side intake, a rear exhaust aligned with the CPU cooler, and an optional top-rear exhaust. Aim for slightly positive or near-neutral pressure, keep the airflow path clear, and tune fan curves against sustained workloads. This is a starting point—not a universal fan-count formula—because filters, radiators, case layout and GPU heat output determine the result.
What good PC airflow is supposed to do
Effective airflow supplies cool air to the GPU and CPU cooler, carries heat away from the motherboard, and prevents warm air from recirculating. Think of it as a directed channel: air enters through the front, side or bottom, crosses the GPU and CPU area, then leaves through the rear or top. Some dual-chamber, inverted, vertical and small-form-factor cases use a different path, so follow the chassis design rather than forcing a conventional layout.

Airflow is a balance of temperature, noise and dust. More fans help only when they have access to open vents, move air in the intended direction and do not fight another fan.

Most fans have molded arrows showing blade rotation and airflow direction. If yours do not, the open side is usually the intake and the side with the motor struts is the exhaust. Verify rather than guessing.

Intel lists cables, expansion cards, brackets and other obstructions as causes of stagnant areas (Intel thermal-management guidance). If you use smoke to visualize flow, keep it outside the case opening, use only a tiny amount with ventilation, and never allow ash or residue near components.
Fan layouts that work in common cases
Two fans
Use one front intake and one rear exhaust. This establishes a path and is normally better than making both fans intake or both exhaust.
Three fans
Two front intakes and one rear exhaust are a strong baseline for moderate-power systems. Noctua describes this arrangement as sufficient for hardware that does not generate large amounts of heat (Noctua airflow guide).
Five fans
For a higher-performance system, try three front intakes, one rear exhaust and one top-rear exhaust. Noctua presents this as a general baseline, while noting that case-specific testing can differ (Noctua airflow fundamentals).

Bottom and side intake
A vented bottom intake can feed a horizontally mounted GPU directly when the case has adequate feet, a usable filter and clearance from the floor. Do not place the PC on thick carpet. Side intake is often effective in dual-chamber or vertical-airflow cases, but it can oppose a tower cooler or create turbulence if it faces another fan too closely.

- HIGH STATIC PRESSURE: Efficient even with resistance – the generated airflow easily penetrates dense radiators, narrow perforated panels and mesh structures and ensures reliable cooling
- PWM CONTROL WITH WIDE SPEED RANGE: The speed can be progressively adjusted up to 3000 rpm via the 4-pin PWM connection – the fan stops completely at less than 5% PWM
- PRECISE MANUFACTURING FOR MAXIMUM SMOOTH RUNNING: Minimal gaps, automatic balancing and high-precision measurement noticeably reduce vibrations – for quiet, efficient and long-lasting performance
- SMOOTH-RUNNING FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING (FDB): The self-lubricating bearing minimizes noise during operation – ideal for quiet, efficient cooling and a long, reliable service life
- NEW FAN BLADE DESIGN FOR MORE PERFORMANCE: The redesigned rotor blades offer an optimal balance of performance and low noise – especially efficient at low speeds
Top fans
Top-rear exhaust is the safer default. A top-front exhaust can pull fresh air out before it reaches the CPU cooler or GPU. Some chassis test better with a top-front intake and top-rear exhaust, so follow the case maker’s intended path and verify with measurements (Noctua layout guidance).
Positive, neutral and negative pressure
| Condition | Meaning | Benefits | Risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positive | More effective intake airflow than exhaust | Encourages air to leave through vents instead of unfiltered gaps | Restricted filters or poor exhaust can still cause heat and noise |
| Near-neutral | Intake and exhaust are roughly balanced | Predictable flow and a practical dust/cooling compromise | Balance changes with fan speed and resistance |
| Negative | More effective exhaust airflow than intake | Can remove heat aggressively in some cases | Pulls dust through cracks and may starve the GPU of cool air |
Pressure is an airflow condition, not a fan-count ratio. A fast exhaust can move more air than two slow intakes, while a radiator, filter or grille can sharply reduce a fan’s actual intake. Use filtered intakes and tune for slight positive or near-neutral pressure rather than assuming three intake fans guarantee it (Tom’s Hardware pressure guidance).
CPU coolers and AIO radiators
Tower air coolers
Orient the fan to pull from the front or lower-front side and push through the fins toward the rear exhaust. A second fan should continue the same direction. Check RAM height, the case’s maximum cooler height, GPU clearance and cables hanging in front of the intake.
Front or side radiator as intake
Room air passing through the radiator generally favors CPU temperature, but it sends warmer air into the case and can raise GPU temperature.
Top radiator as exhaust
Exhausting through the top generally favors GPU temperature because CPU heat leaves directly, but the CPU receives warmer case air. In Noctua’s test of a specific Antec Flux Pro system with a 250 W Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and an RTX 5080-class 360 W GPU, front mounting produced about 3°C lower CPU temperature while top mounting produced about 1°C better GPU temperature. Those figures apply only to that hardware, chassis, workload and fan curves (Noctua radiator test).

- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
Favor front or side intake for CPU-heavy rendering or a CPU-limited system; favor top exhaust for gaming or a very high-power GPU. Keep the pump below the loop’s highest point where possible, avoid sharply kinked tubes, and confirm radiator and fan clearance.
Improve airflow without buying parts
- Correct reversed fans and confirm they spin.
- Clean front, bottom and top filters outside the PC; let washable filters dry completely.
- Hold fan blades still while using short compressed-air bursts on heatsinks and fans.
- Route power cables behind the motherboard tray and out of intake paths.
- Remove unused drive cages or brackets blocking fans.
- Move the case away from walls, curtains and carpet; keep the PSU intake unobstructed.
- Remove or reposition a fan that creates a short-circuit path or opposes the CPU cooler.
Dense mesh captures more dust but increases resistance and can clog quickly (Noctua filter guidance). Removing a filter may lower temperatures briefly while greatly increasing dust; cleaning or replacing it is usually the better trade.
Choose the right fan and set a sensible curve
Airflow fans suit open mesh panels; static-pressure fans suit radiators, heatsinks, dense filters and restrictive grilles. Hybrid designs cover both jobs. CFM is a free-air volume rating, static pressure describes resistance handling, RPM is speed, and dBA figures are manufacturer measurements that are not directly comparable across brands. Four-pin PWM fans allow motherboard speed control; three-pin fans normally use DC/voltage mode.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI during startup and open the hardware-monitor, fan-control, Q-Fan or Smart Fan page.
- Set four-pin headers to PWM and three-pin headers to DC, then run automatic tuning if available.
- Use CPU temperature for the CPU cooler or radiator; use system or motherboard temperature for case fans when possible. A GPU-temperature source is useful if the firmware supports it.
- Build a gradual curve. As a starting point, try 20–30% up to 40°C, 35–45% at 55°C, 55–65% at 70°C and 75–100% at 80°C or higher.
- Enable delay or smoothing to prevent rapid ramping, save, boot and test.
The example curve must be adapted to each fan’s minimum stable speed, acoustics and component limits. Do not make every case fan react aggressively to brief CPU spikes.
Test changes scientifically
Record room temperature, CPU and GPU temperature, power draw, fan RPM, noise if available, workload duration, PC placement and whether the side panel is installed. Compare idle for a fixed period, a CPU-only load, a GPU-only load, a combined load and the game or application you actually use.

- Compare average and peak temperature.
- Check clock stability and whether temperature keeps climbing or reaches a plateau.
- Compare fan speed and noise, not temperature alone.
- Change one thing at a time and repeat under similar ambient conditions.
Idle readings can mislead because modern processors change voltage, clocks and fan state rapidly. Sustained, repeatable workloads are more useful.

CPU too hot, GPU acceptable
Check cooler orientation, mounting, thermal paste, rear-exhaust alignment, top-front short-circuiting, radiator position, CPU power limits and the CPU fan curve. Improve rear alignment, move or remove a top-front exhaust, or move a front radiator to the top if GPU temperature permits. Reseat the cooler if airflow changes do not help.
GPU too hot, CPU acceptable
Check bottom clearance, front-panel restriction, GPU fan obstruction, bottom-intake availability and whether a front radiator is heating incoming air. Improve front or side intake, add bottom intake where the case supports it, move the radiator to top exhaust, or increase GPU-targeted fan speed.
Both are hot
Look for reversed fans, clogged filters, inadequate intake, restrictive panels, poor cooler installation, high room temperature, excessive power limits, overclocking or an AIO pump/radiator fault. Adding one exhaust fan will not fix a case with no effective intake.
Temperatures are fine but noise is high
- Clean filters and heatsinks.
- Lower unnecessary fan speeds and smooth the curves.
- Use larger fans if the case supports them.
- Replace a noisy or damaged fan.
- Consider undervolting or reducing power limits.
- Replace restrictive panels or the case only after identifying the noise source.
Cleaning dust and optimizing fan speeds can reduce noise without new hardware (Tom’s Hardware quiet-PC guidance).

Dust is severe
Use filtered intakes, slight positive or near-neutral pressure, accessible filters and regular cleaning. Positive pressure without filtered intakes is not dust control (Intel cooling guidance).
When buying hardware is justified
Buy only when existing fans are defective or insufficient, the case lacks usable intake or exhaust mounts, panels and filters are excessively restrictive, a radiator needs stronger pressure performance, or a high-power GPU needs direct bottom or side airflow. A better-ventilated case can matter in a new build, but replacing a case with good mesh, mounts and acceptable temperatures often adds little value.
For reference, Corsair’s RS120 PWM page displayed $14.99 per fan in the United States on August 18, 2026; price and availability can change (Corsair RS120). Noctua’s NF-A12x25 G2 PWM is a premium 1,800 RPM 120 mm fan with a low-noise adaptor and six-year warranty (Noctua NF-A12x25 G2). A lower-speed NF-A12x25 G2 LS-PWM is intended for quiet, moderate-load systems (Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 LS-PWM).
