Then check DLSS, Advanced Optimus, and G-SYNC only if your laptop and game support them. RTX 50 branding alone does not determine performance: GPU power configuration, display, cooling and manufacturer settings all matter.
1. Start with your laptop’s performance mode
Use the laptop manufacturer’s control app or documented settings to choose a performance profile appropriate for gaming. Manufacturers control their own power and cooling behavior, so there is no single profile name or thermal target that applies to every RTX 50 laptop. Consult the manual or support page for your exact model.

For a demanding gaming session, connect the charger and select the maker’s recommended plugged-in gaming or performance mode. If you prefer quieter fans, lower power use, or longer battery life, a balanced or quiet profile may be a better tradeoff. The names and available modes vary by model; do not assume that a profile with a particular label behaves the same across brands.
2. Check which GPU is running the game
NVIDIA Optimus can select integrated graphics or the high-performance NVIDIA GPU for a program. NVIDIA says its driver normally chooses an appropriate processor automatically, but a laptop maker’s Windows power plan may affect whether a program can use the NVIDIA GPU. Use your manufacturer’s current instructions for model-specific controls; older NVIDIA help pages may show menu wording that differs from your installed software.
#1 Best Overall

- Set the laptop’s power mode: choose the plugged-in performance mode recommended for your laptop, if available.
- Inspect GPU activity: NVIDIA’s Optimus help describes checking GPU activity from the notification area. The exact icon or menu can vary by driver and laptop.
- Review per-app graphics selection only if needed: if the game is using the wrong processor, use Windows or NVIDIA’s current per-app graphics controls, following the instructions for your installed version.
- Restart the game after changing its preferred GPU: NVIDIA says a processor preference change takes effect when the program is restarted.
A forced high-performance GPU preference is not automatically better for every app: NVIDIA warns that manual selection can reduce battery life or cause some programs not to run correctly. For most users, automatic selection is the sensible default; troubleshoot a specific game if it is not using the expected GPU.
3. Establish a useful in-game baseline
Begin at the laptop’s native resolution
Set the game to the screen’s native resolution first. This gives you a clear baseline for image quality and performance. If the game runs below your desired frame rate, reduce demanding graphics options or use supported upscaling rather than assuming every RTX 50 laptop should run every game at maximum settings.
Choose settings for the experience you want
Graphics quality, responsiveness, frame rate, fan noise and battery use involve tradeoffs. For competitive play, you may prefer lower latency and steadier frame delivery over maximum visual detail. In a single-player game, you may accept a lower frame rate for richer visuals. Tune using the same repeatable scene in the same game, change one group of settings at a time, and compare the result with your own priorities; this is a practical comparison method, not a promised benchmark.

NVIDIA’s Optimal Playable Settings can provide a starting point. NVIDIA describes it as configuring personalized graphics settings based on the PC’s GPU, CPU and display to balance performance and image quality. Treat that configuration as a suggestion, then adjust it to suit your game and preferences.
4. Enable DLSS features per supported game
First check the game’s own graphics menu for DLSS support and enable the relevant in-game feature. NVIDIA app overrides are title-specific: they apply only to supported games, and the relevant in-game feature must be enabled. Available options and driver requirements can change, so check the installed NVIDIA app and current feature documentation rather than relying on an old menu description.
For supported titles, NVIDIA documents DLSS controls in NVIDIA app > Graphics > Program Settings > Driver Settings. RTX 50 Series users may see a Multi Frame Generation override when Frame Generation is enabled in-game, alongside other frame-generation model and Super Resolution-related overrides. Some expanded override features have driver requirements; NVIDIA’s documentation has cited version 572.83 WHQL or newer for one such feature, but that version is not a permanent requirement for every option.

NVIDIA says DLSS Multi Frame Generation can generate up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame. That is a stated technology maximum, not a guaranteed game frame rate. Availability and results depend on the game and configuration, and generated frames are not the same as traditionally rendered frames. If an option is missing, confirm game support, the in-game setting, app version and driver before assuming the laptop is incompatible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Check Advanced Optimus and G-SYNC support
Advanced Optimus is available only on compatible laptops. It can switch display routing between integrated graphics for basic tasks and the GeForce GPU for GPU-accelerated applications or games. G-SYNC and related display controls also depend on the laptop’s hardware and display configuration.
- In the NVIDIA app, open System > My Rig, select View Rig Details, and check the listed features for Advanced Optimus.
- If supported, open System > Displays > Display Mode to see the documented display controls. NVIDIA says G-SYNC and additional display options appear when NVIDIA GPU is selected.
- Confirm the laptop screen’s specifications and supported display modes with the manufacturer. A menu option or feature should not be assumed to exist on every RTX 50 laptop.
6. Compare complete laptop configurations, not GPU names alone
NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series laptop lineup includes RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5070, RTX 5060 and RTX 5050 Laptop GPUs. Those tier names do not, by themselves, tell you how a particular laptop will perform. Before choosing between models, compare the exact configuration and the games and settings you care about.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact GPU tier and laptop GPU power configuration | Power configuration affects the conditions under which a laptop GPU operates; the tier label alone is not a complete performance specification. |
| Screen resolution, refresh rate and G-SYNC support | These determine the display’s capabilities and whether the panel supports features you want to use. |
| Manufacturer performance modes | Available profiles affect the laptop’s power and cooling behavior and may differ between plugged-in and battery use. |
| Display routing and Advanced Optimus support | Routing options vary by laptop and can determine which display modes and controls are available. |
| Support in your games for DLSS and other desired features | DLSS options and overrides are title-specific, not a universal switch for every game. |
| Your preferred balance of image quality, latency, frame rate, fan noise and battery life | The right setup depends on whether you prioritize competitive response, visual detail, quiet operation or portability. |
NVIDIA’s published relative-performance comparison specifies a test context of 150 W GPU TGP, 1440p and maximum settings, along with particular DLSS settings and frame-generation conditions by GPU generation. That comparison describes those test conditions; it should not be treated as a result every RTX 50 laptop will achieve. Check the exact model’s specifications and independent testing for the configuration you are considering.
Quick Recap
Recommended setup sequence
- Read your laptop’s manual or support page and select an appropriate plugged-in gaming performance mode.
- Start the game at the display’s native resolution and choose an initial graphics-quality balance.
- Check GPU activity if performance suggests the game may be using integrated graphics; adjust per-app selection only when necessary.
- Enable DLSS or frame-generation features in the game when supported, then inspect relevant NVIDIA app overrides for that title.
- Check the NVIDIA app and laptop specifications for Advanced Optimus and G-SYNC support before changing display routing.
- Compare changes in the same game scene, one settings group at a time, and keep the configuration that best matches your priorities.
