Optimize images in this order: remove unnecessary bytes with appropriate compression, serve dimensions that match the display, let the browser discover the important image early, lazy-load images that start offscreen, reserve space for every image, and measure the result. There is no single best format or guaranteed speed gain: the best choice depends on the image, its visible quality, browser support, and how the page loads.
1. Find the images that matter most
Start with the large and prominent images, not an indiscriminate site-wide conversion. A small decorative icon is unlikely to be the same priority as a heavy hero image that is visible as soon as the page opens. If an image is the page’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element, reducing its transfer time or helping the browser find it sooner can improve that part of the loading experience. Image work will not necessarily improve LCP when some other element is responsible.
For each candidate, record its file size, format, intrinsic pixel dimensions, rendered dimensions, and whether it appears in the initial viewport. Compare the source dimensions with the size at which the image is actually displayed. A 2,000-pixel-wide source used in a 400-pixel-wide card can send more data than the visible result requires. web.dev says serving desktop-sized images to mobile devices can use 2–4 times more data than needed; treat that as web.dev’s reported guidance, not a guaranteed saving for an individual page.
Check a real page load at common mobile and desktop viewport sizes. Browser developer tools can show the image request and its transferred size; the markup or CMS tells you which source candidates are available. Keep a short list of the images that are both large and important to the page experience.

2. Choose a format and compression level by image
There is no format that produces the smallest file for every image at an acceptable visual quality. Export a few representative images at plausible settings, compare the rendered results at the size visitors see, and keep the version that achieves the best balance of bytes, quality, transparency needs, and compatibility.
| Format | Good fit | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Logos, icons, and other vector artwork | It is not a substitute for photographic raster images. |
| WebP | Photographs or graphics where lossy or lossless compression is useful; transparency is supported. | Compare the result with other formats for the specific image and audience. |
| AVIF | Images where its encoding produces a smaller result at the quality you need. | Actual savings vary; check the browser support your audience needs and provide fallback or negotiated delivery where necessary. |
| JPEG or PNG | Existing assets or image-specific compatibility and content requirements. | Neither is automatically the smallest choice for every kind of image. |
web.dev describes WebP as supporting lossy and lossless compression and transparency, and notes that AVIF can be smaller than older formats. Those capabilities do not establish a universal size advantage: content and encoder settings matter. For animated images, consider whether the animation is necessary and choose a suitable delivery format for your stack rather than assuming that still-image advice settles the choice.
When you use an image optimizer, inspect both the output file size and the visible result. Tools such as Squoosh and ImageOptim are examples named by web.dev; that is not a comparative recommendation or a statement about their current prices or capabilities. Image services and CDNs can automate conversion and delivery, but the implementation still needs correct dimensions, fallbacks or content negotiation, and cache behavior.
3. Serve dimensions suited to the display
Keep a source near the largest real display size you need, then provide a modest set of smaller candidates. The browser can select an appropriate resource when you describe the candidates with srcset and how much layout space the image uses with sizes. The sizes value should describe the rendered CSS width at the relevant breakpoints; a wrong value can lead the browser to choose a file that is too small or unnecessarily large.

In this example, the image can occupy the full viewport up to 600 CSS pixels, and otherwise is expected to occupy 800 CSS pixels. Adjust the candidates and sizes to the actual layout rather than copying these example numbers blindly. After implementing it, inspect the request in the browser at both a mobile and desktop viewport and confirm which file was selected.
If you need to art-direct the image—for example, use a different crop on a narrow screen—use <picture> with a media condition. For format alternatives, put a supported preferred format first and retain a fallback in the <img> element:
<picture>
<source type="image/avif"
srcset="/images/valley-800.avif 800w,
/images/valley-1200.avif 1200w"
sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 800px">

Use a manageable candidate set: every additional variant is another asset to generate, store, and maintain. If your server or image CDN instead negotiates a format using the request’s Accept header, configure shared caches to distinguish those responses with Vary: Accept. Otherwise, a cache can serve one format variant to a request that should receive another. Browser support and service behavior can change, so confirm current compatibility for your audience and delivery stack.
4. Lazy-load offscreen images, not the image visitors need first
For an image that begins below the fold, native lazy loading can avoid fetching it until it is closer to view:

<img src="/images/related-article.webp"
width="800" height="533"
loading="lazy"
alt="A camera on a desk">
Do not add loading="lazy" indiscriminately to every image. A hero image or other important image already visible in the initial viewport should generally remain eager and discoverable. Delaying it can make the visible content load later, including when it is the LCP image. Apply lazy loading according to where the image appears in the page, not simply because it is an image.
Keep important image requests in the initial HTML where possible. If the browser cannot discover the image until it processes a script or stylesheet, fix that discovery path when practical. A genuinely critical image may be a candidate for fetchpriority="high":
<img src="/images/home-hero.webp"
width="1600" height="900"
fetchpriority="high"
alt="The product in use outdoors">
Use the hint selectively. Giving one resource higher priority can affect the resources competing with it. Preload only when normal discovery is delayed and the image is important enough to justify it. Multiple preloads, or preloading competing formats when a browser would choose just one, can waste bandwidth and compete with scripts, fonts, and other critical resources.
5. Reserve the image’s space
Set intrinsic width and height attributes on images, or define an aspect ratio in CSS, so the browser can reserve the right area before the file arrives. This helps prevent surrounding content from jumping when the image loads. It addresses layout stability; it does not make the image transfer faster.

Those attributes describe the image’s intrinsic proportions; CSS can still scale it to fit a responsive layout. For example:
.article-image {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
For a container that intentionally crops images into a consistent shape, set the container’s aspect ratio and use an appropriate crop rule such as object-fit: cover. Make sure the reserved shape matches the final display, rather than reserving one shape and changing it after load.
6. Measure the change on the page
Measure before and after changes under comparable conditions. In browser developer tools, inspect the network requests for image bytes, selected responsive candidate, and loading sequence. Check that the LCP image is found early, that below-fold images are deferred, and that image space is reserved. Then compare page performance data when field data is available; real visitors use different devices, connections, browsers, and viewports.
web.dev’s cited page-experience guidance uses the 75th percentile, segmented by mobile and desktop, with targets of LCP at 2.5 seconds or less, INP at 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS at 0.1 or less. These are page-level targets, not promises that image compression alone will achieve them. A page can miss a target because of server response, JavaScript, fonts, layout, or other resources even after images are improved.

For visual verification across layouts, capture the relevant page at the viewports your layout supports and compare the result to ensure format, crop, and sizing changes did not introduce visible defects. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an image optimizer; a screenshot can help inspect rendered output, but it does not reduce the bytes your visitors download.
Common problems and fixes
- The image is still oversized on mobile: inspect the chosen request and the
sizesvalue. Correct the rendered-width description and confirm smallersrcsetcandidates exist at useful dimensions. - A visible hero image appears late: check that it is present in the initial HTML, is not marked lazy, and is not hidden behind a delayed script or CSS discovery path. Consider high fetch priority only if it is truly critical.
- The page jumps when images load: add intrinsic dimensions or reserve the correct aspect ratio before the request completes; check that CSS does not later impose a different shape.
- A converted image looks poor: raise the quality setting or choose a different format for that image. Compare at its actual displayed size rather than accepting a file-size target that damages visible detail.
- A format variant is missing or served incorrectly: verify server/CDN negotiation or the
<picture>fallback chain. When a shared cache varies the response byAccept, ensure it keys variants usingVary: Accept. - Performance did not improve as expected: check whether images were the limiting resource or LCP element, and whether the browser selected smaller files. Evaluate page metrics as a whole instead of attributing every change to image work.

If your next step is checking how an optimized page actually renders, a screenshot request can capture it without setting up browser automation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. A screenshot helps inspect appearance; it does not optimize the image files or replace measuring the page’s performance.
