How to Optimize a Minecraft Server on Linux for Better Performance

Learn how to diagnose CPU, memory, disk and network bottlenecks, then tune Paper’s distance settings, entity delivery, Linux transport and Java heap one change at a time.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest way to reduce lag on a Linux Minecraft server is to measure the bottleneck before changing settings. Determine whether the server is missing tick deadlines because of CPU work, pausing during garbage collection, waiting on chunk storage, or struggling to deliver data over the network. Then adjust one control at a time: keep Paper’s native Linux transport enabled, tune view-distance and simulation-distance independently, reduce entity delivery only when entity traffic is the problem, and size the Java heap so Linux still has memory for its own work.

There is no universal “best” configuration. Player count, plugins, redstone machines, mob farms, world size, concurrent exploration, CPU generation, storage latency and available memory all change the result. The workflow below gives you a repeatable way to find stable settings without sacrificing more gameplay than necessary.

What causes lag on a Linux Minecraft server?

“Lag” describes several different failures. A server can have a low frame rate on one player’s computer while its simulation remains healthy, or it can fail to complete a 20-tick-per-second cycle on time. Network delay can make players rubber-band even when the server’s CPU is idle. Treat these as separate symptoms.

  • Tick or CPU saturation: the main server thread spends too long on entity AI, redstone, plugins, world generation or other scheduled work.
  • Garbage-collection pressure: Java allocates and reclaims objects rapidly. Long pauses stop or delay ticks.
  • Chunk I/O and generation: loading or generating terrain can wait on storage or consume substantial CPU, especially when several players explore new areas at once.
  • Network delivery: large numbers of chunks or entities create outbound traffic and additional client rendering work.

Changing a distance setting can improve one category while leaving another untouched. For example, reducing view-distance lowers chunk transmission but will not fix a plugin that consumes the entire tick budget.

Establish a reproducible baseline

Write down the environment before making a change. Include the Minecraft server version, Java version, Paper build, player count, world size, installed plugins, available CPU cores, total system memory, storage type, and whether players are generating new terrain. Also record the exact event that produces lag.

Use a repeatable workload

Choose a route or activity that can be repeated: have the same number of players travel through the same unexplored region, activate the same farm, or reproduce the same redstone machine. Record measurements during the event rather than relying on a general impression from a busy evening.

  • Tick timing, including average and worst-case tick duration.
  • Java heap used, committed and maximum.
  • Garbage-collection frequency and pause duration.
  • CPU utilization, especially sustained saturation on the server’s busiest core.
  • Disk latency or I/O wait while chunks load or save.
  • Inbound and outbound network traffic, plus packet loss or connection instability.

Keep a copy of server.properties and your JVM launch command. After each change, restart cleanly, repeat the same workload and compare the same measurements. If the workload or player count changes between tests, you cannot reliably attribute an improvement to the setting you changed.

Keep Paper’s Linux transport enabled

In server.properties, leave the following setting enabled on Linux unless a controlled compatibility test shows a problem:

use-native-transport=true

Paper documents this option as providing “a performance boost for Linux servers.” It changes the network transport path used by the server. It is a low-risk baseline setting, but verify behavior with your particular kernel, Java runtime and deployment rather than assuming it will resolve CPU-heavy plugins or overloaded connections.

Set view distance for chunk traffic

view-distance is the server-side radius of world data sent to clients. Paper documents a default of 10 chunks and a valid range of 3 through 32. Increasing it lets players receive terrain farther away, but it also increases the amount of chunk data the server must load, prepare and transmit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to change it

  1. Stop the server cleanly so configuration changes are not overwritten.
  2. Open server.properties in the server directory.
  3. Set view-distance to a conservative value appropriate to your player count and hardware, such as a lower value for a small VPS under heavy exploration.
  4. Save the file and start the server.
  5. Repeat the baseline route and compare tick time, chunk-load behavior and outbound traffic.

Lower the value when players exploring new terrain cause network spikes, chunk stalls or storage wait. Raise it only when tick time, network headroom and storage latency remain comfortable and players genuinely need to see farther. A lower value means distant world data is not sent; it does not directly control the radius in which mobs receive updates.

Set simulation distance for entity and AI work

simulation-distance is also measured as a chunk radius, and Paper documents a valid range of 3 through 32. It controls where living entities are updated. That includes mob AI and the behavior players commonly associate with farms and active creatures.

Gameplay effects of lowering simulation distance

Reducing this value can cut CPU work more directly than reducing view distance when entities are the bottleneck. The trade-off is gameplay: mobs and farms outside the smaller simulation radius update less often or stop receiving the same processing until a player comes close enough. A farm that appears visible can therefore behave differently if it lies outside the active simulation area.

  1. Lower simulation-distance separately from view-distance.
  2. Test the same mob farms, villager areas and redstone-adjacent entities that players use during normal play.
  3. Check tick timing and entity behavior, not just whether the server starts.
  4. Restore the previous value if important farms, defenses or transport systems no longer operate as expected.

Do not lower both distance values at once if you are trying to identify the cause. Separate changes show whether chunk delivery or entity ticking is responsible.

Control entity broadcast range when packets are the issue

entity-broadcast-range-percentage is a separate control from both distance settings. Paper describes it as controlling how close entities need to be before they are sent to clients. Higher values allow entities to be rendered from farther away and can increase lag because more entity updates are delivered.

When this setting is appropriate

  • Use it when network traffic or client rendering rises with large numbers of visible entities.
  • Use it as a targeted reduction for crowded bases, animal pens or mob-heavy areas.
  • Do not treat it as a substitute for diagnosing a CPU-heavy plugin, pathological redstone machine or excessive entity count.

Test a busy area with the same number of players before and after the change. Watch outbound traffic and client behavior, and make sure important entities do not disappear at an inconvenient distance for normal gameplay.

Size the Java heap deliberately

Paper’s Aikar’s-flags example includes -Xms10G -Xmx10G -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 along with additional G1-related options. Treat that command as a documented starting point, not a universal prescription. The example’s 10 GB heap is not automatically correct for your server.

Paper explicitly warns that “more memory does not mean better performance above a certain point.” A heap that is too small creates allocation pressure and frequent collection. A heap that is unnecessarily large increases the process footprint and can make collection behavior less efficient while starving Linux, native libraries, file cache and other services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave headroom for the operating system

Do not assign all physical RAM to Java. Reserve memory for the Linux kernel, filesystem cache, native allocations, monitoring, backups, a proxy or database, and any other services on the machine. A host that swaps because Java consumed every available gigabyte will usually perform worse than one with a smaller, stable heap.

Understand the allocation rate

Paper’s Aikar’s-flags documentation states: “Minecraft has an extremely high memory allocation rate, ranging to at least 800MB/second on a 30 player server!” That is documentation context, not a promise that every 30-player server behaves identically. Plugin mix, world activity, Java version and player behavior change allocation rates. Measure heap occupancy and collection pauses during your own workload.

Apply JVM changes safely

  1. Save the current launch command and note the Java runtime version.
  2. Choose a fixed initial and maximum heap only after accounting for total system memory and other services.
  3. Use G1GC settings as a baseline when they match your Java and Paper environment; do not copy a long flag list blindly across runtimes.
  4. Restart the server and observe several complete workload runs.
  5. Compare pause times, tick stalls, heap occupancy and resident system memory.

If pauses remain long despite ample headroom, investigate allocation sources and plugins rather than continually increasing -Xmx. If the heap repeatedly reaches its limit, either reduce workload or increase it only when the operating system still has safe memory headroom.

simulation-distance Entity ticking and AI work Farms, mobs and other living entities update over a smaller radius
entity-broadcast-range-percentage Entity packets and client rendering Entities disappear at shorter distances

use-native-transport=true Linux network transport path Paper documents a Linux performance boost; compatibility still needs verification in your deployment

Diagnose CPU, memory, disk and network bottlenecks

Signs of CPU or tick saturation

  • Worst-case tick times rise while one server thread is consistently busy.
  • Lag appears around mob farms, redstone, command systems or plugin events.
  • Reducing simulation distance helps more than reducing view distance.

Inspect plugins and high-entity areas, then profile the workload with the diagnostic tools available for your Paper build. A distance reduction is only a mitigation if the underlying workload remains excessive.

Signs of garbage-collection pressure

  • Tick stalls coincide with long or frequent GC pauses.
  • Heap occupancy repeatedly approaches the maximum.
  • Increasing the heap temporarily delays symptoms but does not remove them.

Check allocation behavior, plugin activity and pause logs. Keep enough headroom for Linux instead of assigning every spare gigabyte to Java.

Signs of chunk storage or generation limits

  • Lag occurs primarily while players explore new terrain.
  • Disk wait or storage latency rises during chunk loads and saves.
  • Existing, already-loaded areas remain smooth.

Test exploration separately from a stationary farm workload. Lowering view distance can reduce concurrent chunk demand, but it cannot make slow storage or expensive generation instant.

Signs of network delivery problems

  • Outbound traffic spikes when many chunks or entities become visible.
  • Players report delayed updates or rubber-banding while server tick measurements remain acceptable.
  • Lowering entity broadcast range or view distance reduces the symptom.

Check host bandwidth, packet loss and client-side rendering. Keep native transport enabled on Linux unless your compatibility test shows a concrete fault.

A controlled tuning procedure

  1. Record the baseline: capture versions, player count, workload, tick data, heap and GC behavior, CPU, disk wait and network traffic.
  2. Confirm transport: set use-native-transport=true, restart and verify the server remains stable.
  3. Test view distance: change only view-distance, repeat the route and compare chunk and network measurements.
  4. Test simulation distance: restore the previous view value, change only simulation-distance, and test farms and entity-heavy areas.
  5. Test entity delivery: adjust entity-broadcast-range-percentage only if entity packets or rendering are implicated.
  6. Test JVM sizing: apply a deliberate heap and G1GC baseline, leaving operating-system headroom, then observe multiple runs.
  7. Document the result: keep the setting only when it improves the target metric without unacceptable gameplay, stability or network trade-offs.

Common mistakes and recovery

Changing every setting at once

You lose the ability to identify what helped and may hide a new problem. Restore the backup, change one variable, and repeat the same workload.

Assuming more RAM fixes every lag spike

Extra heap cannot repair a saturated tick thread, slow chunk storage or an overloaded network. Check the relevant measurement first.

Using view distance to solve entity AI work

View distance governs world data delivery. If living entities and farms consume the tick budget, test simulation distance and inspect the entity workload instead.

Ignoring gameplay after a performance change

A setting can improve a server metric while making farms, mob behavior or visibility unacceptable. Include real player activities in every validation run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running without rollback files

Keep dated copies of server.properties and JVM arguments. If a change causes crashes, broken farms or worse latency, stop the server, restore the last known-good files and restart cleanly.

Practical starting point

For a new tuning pass, enable Paper’s native Linux transport, keep the documented default view-distance=10 only if measurements show sufficient headroom, and choose a conservative simulation distance that preserves the farms and mob behavior your players need. Reduce view distance for chunk and network pressure; reduce simulation distance for entity ticking; reduce entity broadcast range for excessive entity delivery; and tune the heap only after observing allocation and pause behavior. The correct final values are the ones that survive your repeatable workload with acceptable tick time, memory use, storage latency, network delivery and gameplay.
