For many titles, the opt-in process is as simple as selecting a “beta” branch inside the Steam client.
This guide focuses on the exact clicks and the real-world gotchas you’ll hit in 2024—missing beta options, password-gated branches, playtest invites, and rollbacks back to the public version.

What it Means to Opt Into a Steam Game Beta
On Steam, a “beta” is usually a different build of the same game—often labeled as a branch (for example, public-test, beta, experimental)—that you can download and play. Developers use branches to distribute updates to testers without impacting everyone’s version.
When you opt in, Steam downloads the selected build and updates the game to match that branch. When you opt out, Steam switches you back to the public branch (often called NONE).

Prerequisites Before You Start
- An active Steam account (logged in on the Steam client you’re using).
- The game installed or ready to install. Some betas can’t be switched if the game isn’t present, depending on the developer’s setup.
- Branch access if the beta is gated (password/code or invite-only membership).
- Enough disk space for the beta build. Expect another full download if the beta differs significantly.
Where to Find Beta Options in Steam
The beta control is typically located per game inside Steam’s Properties. Look for the tab named BETAS. If you don’t see it, the developer may not offer a beta for that title at the moment.
Branch selection is done inside Steam, not in the in-game menus. The game’s official announcements (Steam News, Discord, or patch notes) are often where branch names and passwords are posted.
Opt Into a Game Beta via Game Properties (the usual method)
Step-by-step: choose a beta branch
- Open the Steam client and make sure you’re logged in.
- Go to your Library and right-click the game you want.
- Select Properties….
- Click the BETAS tab.
- Find the Beta participation drop-down.
- Select the beta branch you want (for example, public-test or beta).
- If a password field appears, enter the password provided by the developer.
- Click Check for updates or Close (Steam will usually start downloading updates as soon as the branch is accepted).
Steam doesn’t “queue” a beta like a reservation—once you choose a branch, Steam updates your installed game to that build.
How to confirm the right branch is installed
After switching, open Steam’s Library and watch the Updates / download progress. Once finished, launch the game and compare the version/build number if the developer exposes it in the main menu or patch notes.
If the game shows an internal build ID in the settings or about screen, that’s the most reliable confirmation. Otherwise, rely on Steam’s installed version and the patch notes corresponding to that beta branch.
Opt Into a Beta That Uses Playtest or Invite Codes
Some games don’t use the BETAS tab at all. Instead, Steam Playtest or developer invites control access. In those cases, you usually need an invite, a key, or a one-time acceptance link that activates access to the test app.

Common invite flows you’ll see
- Steam Store access to a Playtest app: the invite grants access to a separate test listing.
- Code redemption: you redeem a code on Steam to unlock the playtest.
- Account-based eligibility: the developer enables your account for a beta without a visible branch selector.
Where invite details typically show up
- Email from Steam or the developer (if you opted into notifications).
- Steam Library showing a new “beta/playtest” app entry.
- Steam News on the game’s store page (often includes branch/password instructions for the BETAS method).
Windows, macOS, and Steam Deck: The Exact Click Path
The mechanics are the same across platforms: open the game’s Properties, then the BETAS tab, then select the branch. The UI varies slightly by device.

Steam Deck
You can opt into betas on Steam Deck via the desktop-mode Steam client or when the Steam client menus render properly in your current mode.
- Switch to Desktop mode (recommended for easiest navigation).
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click or tap-hold the game → Properties….
- Go to the BETAS tab.
- Select the beta branch and enter a password if prompted.
- Allow the update to download and install.
If you don’t see the BETAS tab on Deck, it may be a Steam UI rendering issue or a sign the developer isn’t offering branches for that title.
Beta Types Compared (Public, Limited, Password-Gated, and Branch-Only)
| Beta Type | How Access Works | Where You Opt In | What You’ll Usually See |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public beta branch | No invite needed | Game > Properties > BETAS | Branch list in the drop-down |
| Limited beta | Capacity-limited or whitelisted | Game > Properties > BETAS (sometimes not) | Your account may or may not see the branch |
| Password-gated beta | Password/code required | Game > Properties > BETAS | Password field after selecting branch |
| Playtest (separate app) | Invite or code required | Library shows a playtest app, not branches | New “Playtest” entry in Library |
How to Leave a Beta and Return to the Public Version
If you want the stable release again, switch your participation back to the public branch. This is the same area you used to opt in—Steam just needs to know you no longer want the beta build.
Recommended Free Tools
Step-by-step: revert to public
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click the game → Properties….
- Click BETAS.
- In Beta participation, select NONE (or the option that corresponds to the public release).
- Click Check for updates to trigger the switch/download.
What happens to your save files
Save file behavior depends on the game. Some betas keep saves compatible with the public build, while others may add data that older versions can’t read. If the developer mentions “save compatibility” in beta notes, follow that guidance.

When in doubt, back up saves before switching back. Many games store saves in standard locations (for example, under your user profile or the game’s configuration folder), but the exact path is title-specific.
What to do if updates don’t switch back cleanly
- Trigger the update again via Properties… → BETAS → select NONE.
- Use Verify integrity of game files (see troubleshooting below) if Steam seems stuck on the beta build.
- Restart Steam if the BETAS tab UI doesn’t refresh properly.
Troubleshooting: Betas Not Showing, Won’t Download, or Crashes
Beta tab missing
If you don’t see the BETAS tab at all, the developer likely has no active branches, or the game doesn’t support Steam beta branches. Check the game’s Steam News or store page for current beta availability.
Also confirm you’re looking at the correct game entry in your Library (some games have separate editions, which may or may not host betas).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNo beta branches listed
You might see the BETAS tab but the drop-down is empty. Common causes include temporary suspension of the branch, account restrictions, or a developer switching their process to Playtest/invite access instead of branches.
Try these in order:
- Close and reopen Steam.
- Check Steam for client updates.
- Restart your PC if Steam is acting stale.
- Verify you’re signed into the correct Steam account.
Wrong region or account restrictions
Some betas are limited by eligibility. You may have the right game installed but still can’t see the branch because the account isn’t whitelisted or the beta requires acceptance of terms.
If you were given a password or key, make sure you’re entering it in the correct branch selection screen. Password errors usually don’t show a detailed reason—Steam just fails the branch change.

Downloads stuck or verification loops
If the beta download stalls, you’ll usually fix it by verifying files and restarting the update process.
- Go to Steam → Library.
- Right-click the game → Properties….
- Open Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- After verification finishes, re-enter BETAS and re-select your branch (if needed).
Also confirm you have stable bandwidth and that no background downloads or disk issues are interfering. Steam can’t install what it can’t reliably fetch.
Game crashes or breaks after switching branches
Betas are, by definition, unstable. Still, you can reduce pain by doing a clean restart and checking compatibility.
- Launch the game once after the download completes (not mid-download).
- Restart your PC if the beta significantly changed binaries.
- If the game lets you select graphics modes, try reverting to the default preset.
- Verify integrity of game files if you suspect a corrupted download.
If the developer posted known crash issues for that branch, those bug reports usually matter more than generic fixes.
Rollback failed: you’re still on the beta
If you set BETAS to NONE but the game still feels like the beta build, re-check that the branch actually changed. Sometimes Steam needs another update pass.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Entering the wrong beta password. Beta passwords are usually branch-specific, and typos are common.
- Switching branches while a download is mid-progress. Let downloads complete to avoid mismatched files.
- Ignoring Playtest vs Branch differences. Some games require invite access to a separate playtest app, not a BETAS tab.
- Assuming save compatibility. Always back up saves if the developer warns that saves may not carry forward.
- Not checking you’re on the right Steam account, especially with multiple accounts on the same computer.
FAQ: Steam Betas in 2024
Can I opt into multiple betas for the same game?
Usually no. Steam supports selecting one beta branch at a time per game installation. If the developer provides multiple branches, you’ll pick one in the BETAS drop-down.
Will opting into a Steam beta remove achievements or progress?
Most betas use the same account backend and should not erase achievements, but some test environments may reset data or disable certain progression systems. Check the developer’s beta announcement and patch notes for that specific branch.
Why don’t I see the beta branch even though I meet the requirements?
Common reasons include account eligibility not being enabled yet, the developer removing the branch temporarily, or the beta being moved to a Playtest/invite system. Check Steam News on the game page for the current access method.
How do I know if the beta is safe to try?
Read the developer’s beta notes and known-issues list. If they mention breaking changes, unstable performance, or save incompatibility, treat the beta as a test environment and keep backups.
What’s the fastest way to get back to the stable version?
In Steam, go to the game’s Properties… → BETAS and set Beta participation to NONE, then click Check for updates. If it behaves oddly, verify integrity of files.
Do I need to reinstall the game to switch betas?
Typically no. Steam downloads the delta needed for the selected branch and swaps files in place. A full redownload can happen if the branch differs heavily.
Bottom Line
Opting into a game beta on Steam is usually just Library → Properties → BETAS, then choosing the branch you want. If the BETAS tab is missing or empty, the game may be using a Playtest or invite-only model instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When things go wrong, use Steam’s built-in tools—restart Steam, verify integrity of game files, and re-check the selected branch—to get back to the exact build you intended.
