On Windows, select the item and press Shift+F10. On a Mac, Apple documents a VoiceOver method: open the Actions menu for the focused element, then choose its context-menu action if one is available. The Mac route requires VoiceOver; there is no single shortcut established here for every app and operating system.
Open a context menu in Windows
- Move keyboard focus to the file, folder, or other item and select it.
- Press Shift+F10. Microsoft lists this shortcut for displaying the context menu for the selected item. In File Explorer, Microsoft’s instructions likewise say to select the file before pressing the keys: Windows keyboard shortcuts and File Explorer navigation.
- Use the arrow keys to move through the menu. Press Enter to activate an option, or Escape to close it.
The shortcut applies to the currently selected item, not to an arbitrary location where the pointer happens to be. If nothing opens, check that the intended item has focus and is selected.

Open a context menu on a Mac with VoiceOver
Apple documents a VoiceOver route rather than a universal macOS shortcut. Move the VoiceOver cursor to the interface element, then open its Actions menu with VO-Command-Space. Choose the context-menu action if that element offers one. Apple’s instructions are at Use VoiceOver to perform an item’s alternate action on Mac.

What “VO” means
“VO” is the VoiceOver modifier. Apple says its default is Control-Option pressed together; Caps Lock can also be configured as the modifier. With the default modifier, the full sequence is Control-Option-Command-Space. With Caps Lock configured as the modifier, use Caps Lock-Command-Space. See Apple’s guide to VoiceOver keyboard commands.

Another VoiceOver command
Apple also documents VO-Shift-M as Control-click with VoiceOver enabled. Apple identifies Control-click as secondary click on Mac. This is a VoiceOver command, not a general macOS keyboard shortcut; its behavior depends on the platform and element.

If the shortcut does not work
- Confirm the intended item has keyboard focus and is selected; on Windows, Shift+F10 opens the menu for that selected item.
- On Mac, confirm VoiceOver is enabled and the VoiceOver cursor is on the intended element. The Actions menu may not offer a context-menu action for every element.
- If the documented method is unavailable in a particular application, consult that app’s help. Keyboard behavior can vary by application.
