You can also hold Ctrl while opening an Excel shortcut, then confirm the Safe Mode prompt. Safe Mode helps diagnose startup problems by bypassing some Excel startup components; it does not guarantee a repair.
Open Excel in Safe Mode with the Run command
- Press Windows+R to open Run. Alternatively, open Start > All apps > Windows System > Run.
- Type
Excel /safe, including the space betweenExceland/safe. - Select OK. If Excel starts, it is running in Office Safe Mode.

Use the Ctrl-key shortcut method
- Find an Excel shortcut, such as one on the desktop or in the Start menu.
- Hold Ctrl while double-clicking the shortcut.
- When Excel asks whether to start in Safe Mode, confirm.
This method is useful when you can access an Excel shortcut but prefer not to use Run. Microsoft documents both launch methods.
What Safe Mode changes
Excel Safe Mode bypasses some features and settings that load during a normal startup. Microsoft lists alternative startup locations, changed toolbars, Excel startup folders, Excel add-ins, and most COM add-ins among the items that may be bypassed. That makes Safe Mode a diagnostic comparison: if Excel opens there but not during a normal launch, an add-in or another bypassed startup component may be involved. If Excel opens in Safe Mode, check add-ins
Test COM add-ins
- In Excel, select File > Options > Add-ins.
- In the Manage list, select COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear the selected add-ins and restart Excel normally.
- If Excel now works, return to the COM Add-ins list, enable one add-in, and restart Excel. Repeat one at a time until the problem returns; the last enabled add-in is a candidate cause.
Check Excel add-ins if needed
If disabling COM add-ins does not resolve the issue, Microsoft also recommends checking Excel add-ins. Change one item at a time and restart normally to see whether the startup problem changes.
If Excel still will not start
If Excel /safe does not open Excel, Safe Mode has not resolved the launch failure. Continue with Microsoft’s broader Excel troubleshooting steps, including checking for and installing the latest updates. Safe Mode is a diagnostic startup option, not a repair guarantee.

Exit Safe Mode
Close Excel, then start it again normally from its usual shortcut or app list. Do not use /safe for the normal launch.
