The documented route is Android Studio’s Android Emulator: start a virtual Android device, drag the APK onto its screen, complete the installer, and launch the app from the emulator’s app list. Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) and Amazon Appstore have not been available in the Microsoft Store since March 5, 2025, so older guides that rely on installing them describe a retired Store path.
What “opening” an APK means on Windows 11
An APK is an Android app package. Windows 11 does not run it as a native Windows application; you install it inside an Android environment, such as a virtual Android device running in the Android Emulator. The app then runs in that emulator, and compatibility or access to particular app features is not guaranteed.

For a graphical setup, use Android Studio’s Android Emulator and drag the APK onto the emulator window. If you prefer commands or need a repeatable installation, use Android Debug Bridge (adb) instead.

Install and run an APK with Android Emulator
- Install Android Studio. Download it from the Android Developers site. Emulator setup depends on your configuration; check the current Android Studio system requirements rather than assuming one hardware minimum applies to every virtual device.
- Create and start a virtual Android device. In Android Studio’s device tools, create an Android Virtual Device (AVD) if you do not already have one, then start it. Wait until the Android Emulator window is running.
- Find the APK file. Use a package from a source you trust. An APK is installable software, so treat it with the same care as an installer you would run on a PC.
- Drag the APK into the emulator. Drop the file onto the emulator screen. Android Developers documents that an APK Installer dialog appears.
- Complete installation. Follow the APK Installer dialog and wait for the app to install.
- Launch the app. Find it in the emulator’s app list and open it. You are using the app inside the virtual Android device, not converting it into a Windows app.

Install an APK with adb instead
Use adb if you are comfortable with a terminal or want to automate installation. Start an emulator first, then open Command Prompt or another terminal where Android SDK Platform-Tools are available. Run:
adb devices
adb install path_to_apkReplace path_to_apk with the APK’s actual file path. The first command lists connected emulators and devices; the second installs the package on the available target. Google documents this installation command in its Android Debug Bridge (adb) guide.

Choose a target when more than one device is connected
If multiple emulators or Android devices are listed, specify the intended target’s serial number:
adb -s serial_number install path_to_apkGet the serial from adb devices. Without choosing a target, adb can report that more than one device or emulator is available.

Which method should you use?

Why older WSA instructions no longer apply
Microsoft states that “Starting March 5, 2025, Windows Subsystem for Android™ and the Amazon Appstore aren’t available in the Microsoft Store.” See Microsoft’s WSA and Amazon Appstore notice. That retirement concerns the former Store route; it does not prevent installing an APK in Android Emulator, which Google documents separately.
Microsoft’s former WSA instructions listed x64 or ARM64 processors, enabled Virtual Machine Platform, and recommended 16 GB of RAM and SSD storage. Those were historical WSA details, not universal requirements for today’s Android Studio Emulator. Check Android Studio’s current requirements and the setup guidance for your chosen virtual device. Existing WSA installations and unofficial repackaged copies are outside the official current setup route established here; do not treat them as supported or guaranteed safe.
