Android Auto’s developer settings are tucked away, but Google documents them as tools for app development and testing—not as a secret bundle of seven consumer features. To open the menu, tap Version and permission info ten times in Android Auto’s settings, accept the prompt, then choose Developer settings from the overflow menu.
How do I unlock Android Auto developer settings?
-
Open Android Auto settings on your phone. On Android 10 or later, Google’s documented route is Settings > Apps & notifications > See all apps > Android Auto > Advanced > Additional settings in the app. Phone makers may arrange or label these screens differently.

Google says this needs to be enabled only once. Menu labels and the route to Android Auto settings can vary by phone brand. Google’s Android for Cars documentation describes the Android Auto process; Google’s Android Auto Help page also documents the ten-tap method.
This is separate from Android’s phone-level Developer options. You do not need to enable the phone’s Developer options to access Android Auto’s developer menu.

What does Unknown sources do in Android Auto?
Google says the Unknown sources option allows apps not installed from a trusted source. Its scope is limited to media apps, messaging notifications, and parked apps; the exception does not apply to apps built using the Android for Cars App Library. Google’s documentation describes the option as an allowance for those categories, not a universal way to put any phone app on the car screen.
Turning it on does not guarantee a sideloaded app will appear in Android Auto’s launcher or work in your vehicle. It also does not override the rules for apps used while driving. Google’s documentation distinguishes parked apps from apps intended for driving use. See Google’s testing guidance for the category limits and app requirements.

Which other controls may be useful?
The options available can vary with Android Auto versions, devices, and vehicles. The following are examples reported in the documentation and coverage—not a guaranteed or permanent inventory.
Wireless Android Auto
Android Authority describes a developer-menu toggle for enabling or disabling wireless Android Auto. It may be useful when troubleshooting a wireless connection or choosing a wired connection instead. A wireless adapter is separate hardware for some compatible setups; it is not needed to unlock the menu and does not work with every vehicle. Android Authority’s guide to the developer settings discusses the toggle and adapter use case.

Display and technical controls
Tom’s Guide reports settings related to screen resolution, GPS collection, and audio codecs, as well as wireless mode. These are technical controls rather than a reliable set of everyday upgrades, and their presence or behavior should not be assumed to match across versions. Google frames the menu primarily around development and testing. Tom’s Guide’s account of Android Auto settings describes examples of these controls.

Debug logging
One concrete official use is troubleshooting. Google’s Android Auto support instructions tell users to enable Force debug logging in developer settings when preparing a bug report. Follow Google’s separate instructions for submitting the report rather than changing unrelated options. Google’s bug-report instructions explain the process and how to quit developer mode afterward.

Why isn’t there a definitive list of seven features?
The available Google documentation does not establish a stable set of exactly seven consumer features, and it does not say Google is trying to keep the menu from users. The menu is simply not shown by default and is documented as a development and testing facility. Some settings can help with connectivity or diagnostics; others are intended for technical testing and may differ across setups.
Google’s developer documentation summarizes one option this way: “Android Auto has a developer option that lets you run apps that aren’t installed from a trusted source.” That statement should be read with the documented limits on app categories, not as permission to run any app on the car display. Google’s Android for Cars testing documentation explains those boundaries.
