On Android phones, switch between Chrome tabs with the Switch tabs button beside the address bar. Google’s documented steps for opening and managing separate Chrome windows apply to Android tablets: use More > New window to open one, or More > Manage windows to switch to or restore a window.
Switch between Chrome tabs on Android
A tab is an individual page in Chrome. To move between pages, open the tab switcher rather than looking for a separate window manager.
- Open Chrome.
- Tap Switch tabs to the right of the address bar.
- Swipe to the tab you want, then tap it.
Open a separate Chrome window on an Android tablet
Google’s separate-window instructions are for Android tablets. On a tablet, open Chrome, tap More, then choose New window. Google also notes that you can open a new window from Manage windows.
Switch to or restore a Chrome window on a tablet
- In Chrome, tap More > Manage windows.
- Under Active, tap the window you want to open.
- If the window is listed under Inactive, select it and tap Restore.
If restoring an inactive window fails because the window limit has been reached, close an active window to make room, then try again. Google’s current help page does not establish a consistent maximum number of windows.

Open a tab in split-screen view
On a tablet, touch and hold a tab and drag it to the edge of the screen to open it in a new window and trigger split screen. Google says that when Chrome is full screen, a new window starts in split screen by default. What appears can vary with the tablet’s configuration.

These controls handle different levels of organization: the tab switcher selects a page, while Manage windows selects or restores a separate Chrome window. Google’s instructions are from its Chrome Help page on managing tabs in Chrome for Android, accessed October 4, 2026. Menu labels and tablet behavior may vary by Chrome release and device configuration.
