Start Picture in Picture from Safari’s Page menu

Open Safari on your Mac and go to the page with the video.

Start playing the video. Safari’s documented steps require playback to be underway before you enter PiP.

Click the Page menu button in Safari’s Smart Search field, then choose Enter Picture in Picture. This is Apple’s standard built-in route. Apple’s Safari for Mac guide describes PiP as a movable window that floats over other windows.

Drag the floating video to a screen corner or resize it to suit your workspace. It remains in place when you switch desktop spaces.
Return the video to its webpage
Use Restore in the PiP window to return the video to its original page and continue playback there. If you close the PiP window instead, Safari returns to the page and pauses the video.

Use Safari Video Viewer as another route
Safari’s Video Viewer can enlarge a video to fill the current Safari window while hiding the rest of the webpage. It appears only on pages with video that Viewer can show.

Start the video, open the Page menu, and choose Video Viewer if that option is available.

In Video Viewer, click the playback speed button and choose Picture in Picture, or click another window to move the video into PiP.

To leave Video Viewer, use the Page menu or press Escape.

Apple’s September 2025 macOS Tahoe feature guide says videos can be moved into PiP more easily from the Page menu. It also describes skip-forward and skip-back controls, and says ads can be skipped directly from PiP where supported. Apple’s Safari guide describes the skip controls as moving the video by ten seconds; their availability and ad controls can depend on the video and site.

If you don’t see Enter Picture in Picture

Make sure the video is playing, then check the Page menu again.

Look for a PiP control in the video player itself. Web developers can provide a custom PiP control, and whether it appears can depend on the page and video’s PiP support. Apple’s developer documentation describes how a webpage can request PiP for a video.

If Safari offers Video Viewer, try that route and use its controls to enter PiP. The option is not available for every webpage video.

As a fallback, try Control-clicking the playing tab’s small volume icon and checking for Enter Picture in Picture. On YouTube, a second right-click may reveal Safari’s own context menu after the site’s menu opens. These interface-dependent methods can change; Safari’s Page menu remains the primary documented route.
Is a Safari extension required?
No. Safari has a built-in PiP workflow, so an extension is not required. If the built-in controls are not surfaced for an HTML5 video, PiPifier is an optional Safari extension; its App Store listing describes enabling the extension in Safari settings, adding its toolbar icon, interacting with a video, and then pressing the icon. The listing says it is free with in-app purchases. Check its current listing and compatibility details before installing.
