You can view many Visio diagrams in a browser without installing Visio, but editing them is a separate matter: browser editing requires an editing license, and support depends on the file type and diagram features. For a quick route, check whether the file is .vsd or .vsdx, then choose a browser viewer, a licensed Visio web editor, or a third-party importer based on what you need to do.
How do I open a Visio file without Visio?
For viewing, ask the file owner to save or share the diagram in OneDrive or SharePoint, then open it in a browser using the access permissions they provide. Microsoft says browser viewing does not require the desktop Visio application or a Visio license, but the file must be online and shared with you. See Microsoft’s Visio service description.

Some Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Exchange Online users can also open emailed Visio attachments in a browser, according to Microsoft Support. Availability depends on the account and access to the attachment.
Before choosing an editor, check the extension in the filename:

.vsd: an older Visio format. The lightweight Visio in Microsoft 365 does not support it..vsdx: supported by the lightweight Visio in Microsoft 365, though only supported diagram features can be edited there..vdxor.vsdm: Microsoft’s support page lists these among formats viewable with Visio Plan 1; support for editing depends on the plan and diagram compatibility.

Can I edit a VSDX file for free?
Possibly, if the goal is basic editing and the lightweight Visio in Microsoft 365 is available to you. It supports .vsdx, but Microsoft describes it as intended for basic diagrams rather than as a full replacement for desktop Visio. Complex engineering diagrams and software development plans may not be supported. Browser-based editing in Visio for the web requires an editing license; simply being able to view a file does not grant editing rights.

If you try a third-party editor, treat import as a compatibility test rather than a promise that the file will remain fully editable. Make a copy first, then check the pages, text, connectors, shape data, and any specialized objects before relying on the result.

- Open the diagram from OneDrive or a SharePoint document library.
- Select Edit Diagram, then Edit in Browser.
- If the browser displays a compatibility warning, review it before changing or saving the diagram. Microsoft recommends Visio 2013 or later desktop software for full functionality when a diagram uses unsupported features.
Microsoft states that “Creating and editing a diagram in Visio for the web requires a license to edit.” The browser editor also requires an internet connection. If you download a local copy, Microsoft says editing that copy requires desktop Visio. See Microsoft Support and Microsoft Learn.
How do I open a VSD file?
Do not assume the lightweight Visio in Microsoft 365 can open a legacy .vsd file: Microsoft says that app does not support the format. Microsoft lists Visio Plan 1 or Plan 2 as options for working with supported legacy files; its Plan 1 guidance lists .vsd viewing support. Check your plan and the file’s compatibility before expecting to edit it.

If you do not have access to a compatible Visio plan, you can try an alternative importer, but confirm the result on a copy. An import that opens successfully may still alter layout or fail to preserve all editable objects.
Can LibreOffice Draw or diagrams.net open Visio files?

The Document Foundation’s LibreOffice 5.1 documentation lists VSD, VDX, VSDM, and VSDX among formats Draw can open. That documentation is for an older LibreOffice edition, so it establishes a documented import route to try—not guaranteed support or fidelity in every current installation. The Microsoft Marketplace listing for the SharePoint editor says it can import Visio .vsdx files. This is specifically the SharePoint-context editor described in the listing; it does not establish that every Visio object remains fully editable after import. See the draw.io Diagram Editor listing.
How to check an imported or edited diagram
Keep the original file unchanged, and compare the new version against it before sending it on or treating it as a replacement.

- Inspect text, connectors, alignment, and shape appearance at normal viewing size.
- Verify that shape properties, data, links, and diagram-specific objects you rely on are still present.
