You can open and edit many Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without paying for Microsoft 365. For basic work, Microsoft’s free browser apps are the simplest starting point; Google Drive can edit Office files in place, and LibreOffice offers a no-cost desktop option. If you specifically need installed Microsoft apps, Office Home 2024 is a separate one-time-purchase route.
Choose the option that fits your workflow

Use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for free in a browser
A free Microsoft account gives you browser access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Microsoft says free users receive 5 GB of OneDrive online storage; that is cloud storage, not a promise of extra offline storage or a document-size allowance. - Sign in to your Microsoft account in a web browser.
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on the web and choose an existing file from OneDrive or create a new one.
- Make your changes in the browser, then check the saved file and its formatting before sharing it.
Microsoft lists DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX among the editable formats for Office on the web. Legacy DOC, XLS, and PPT files are converted to newer formats for editing, so do not assume every old file or feature will behave exactly as it does in the desktop apps. Microsoft’s Office for the web service description explains supported formats and feature differences.
Know the limits before relying on a web app
- Excel macros: Excel for the web cannot create or run VBA macros. It can open and edit a macro-enabled workbook without removing the VBA code, but you need a desktop app to run or create macros.
- Advanced features: Microsoft identifies some functions, including certain advanced Word page-layout capabilities, as desktop-only.
- Offline work: The browser apps are not a substitute for installed desktop apps when you need the desktop-only offline viewing or authoring features listed by Microsoft.
For a workbook that depends on macros, or a document whose layout must remain exact, confirm that the required behavior is available before switching your workflow to the browser. Microsoft’s detailed limits are in its service description.

Edit Office files directly in Google Drive
If your files are already in Google Drive, you can open and edit Microsoft Office files with Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides. Google says changes can be saved in the original Office format, which is useful when you need to keep collaborating on a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX rather than replace it with a Google-format file.
Convert only if you need Google-specific capabilities such as add-ons or Apps Script. Conversion creates a copy, so make sure you know whether you are editing the original Office file or its converted Google counterpart. Google explains the workflow in Work with Microsoft Office files.

Use LibreOffice for free desktop editing
LibreOffice is a free, open-source desktop office suite. It includes Writer for documents, Calc for spreadsheets, and Impress for presentations. It is a practical choice if you want to edit files on a computer without depending on a browser workflow; see the official LibreOffice overview.
Because it is a different suite, do not assume every complex Microsoft Office file will display or behave identically. Keep an untouched copy of important files, then check page layout, formulas, charts, and slides in the software your collaborators use if those details matter. Microsoft’s file format reference notes, for example, that ODS spreadsheets may lose formatting when opened and saved in Excel. That is a reminder to verify files when moving between formats or applications, not a compatibility guarantee for any particular file.

When a one-time Microsoft Office purchase makes sense
If you need installed Microsoft desktop apps but do not want a Microsoft 365 subscription, consider Office Home 2024. Microsoft describes it as a one-time purchase for one computer, with PC and Mac options. It does not include upgrades to later major releases. Protect important files when opening or converting them
- Keep an untouched original before editing a file in another app or converting it.
- After editing, check the parts most likely to affect your work: layout, formulas, macros, charts, and presentation slides.
- Use the format your collaborators need for continued editing, and confirm which copy is authoritative if a conversion created a second file.
- Use PDF for final distribution when preserving page layout matters more than making the document easy to edit. Microsoft describes PDF as a layout-preserving format rather than an easily editable working format in its file format reference.
