The extension is used by unrelated, application-specific formats, so first confirm the complete filename and find out which app or device created the file. Then choose software documented for that specific format; changing the extension will not convert it.
1. Check that the file really ends in .ink
In Windows File Explorer, turn on filename extensions so you can see the complete name. Microsoft explains how to display extensions and notes that they identify file types in its guide to common file name extensions. Check carefully for .lnk, the extension used for Windows shortcuts, rather than .ink.

Do not rename the file to .gif, .png, or another extension as a way to make it open. Microsoft states: “You can change a file name extension, but that won’t convert the file to another format or change anything else about it except the file name.”

2. Find out where the file came from
Recall whether it was created or downloaded using a particular app, device, website, or older computer. If someone sent it to you, ask which application created it. The source is a better clue than the suffix alone: documented possibilities include Inker drawings and Microsoft ink-related data, while some older or third-party references associate certain variants with CorelDRAW/Pantone-related use.

There is no evidence-based universal ranking of apps for the .ink extension. Choose based on the file’s origin and actual format, your operating system, whether you need to view or edit it, and compatibility with that particular variant.
3. Choose the opener that matches the identified format
Inker drawing
For a drawing known to have been made in Inker, FileInfo describes the .INK file as JSON-formatted text representing a vector graphic and identifies Inker as the application that can open it: FileInfo’s INK file reference. Opening it in a text editor may reveal structured text, but that is not the same as viewing or editing the drawing as an image.

Windows Ink and ISF data
Windows Ink’s serialized ink-stroke data (ISF) is a format-specific case, not an explanation for every file ending in .ink. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes saving ink in a GIF with embedded ISF metadata and loading it through an ink-aware application. Its tutorial says, “The ISF file is a basic GIF image that includes additional metadata describing ink-stroke properties and behaviors.” A non-ink-enabled app may display the basic GIF image while ignoring the stroke metadata. See Microsoft’s ink save-and-load example and Windows ink tutorial. Those examples do not establish that an arbitrary standalone .ink file is ISF.

Use Microsoft Journal only if you know the file belongs to Journal or to a format it supports; the fact that Journal works with digital ink does not make it a universal .ink opener. Microsoft lists Journal in the Microsoft Store and specifies Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 19042.0 or later in its Journal requirements and availability information. Separately, Microsoft’s Windows support page says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the Journal requirement does not mean Windows 10 remains generally supported in 2026.

Possible CorelDRAW/Pantone-related variant
Some older or third-party sources associate certain .INK files with CorelDRAW/Pantone-related use. A 2013 Microsoft Q&A response and a third-party extension listing are historical leads, not current Corel compatibility documentation. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion and third-party INK extension listing. Verify the precise variant and software version before trying CorelDRAW; the association alone cannot identify an unknown file.
4. Use Windows discovery if you still do not know the format
- Inspect installed options: right-click the file, choose Open with > Choose another app, and check whether an installed application is known to support the file’s identified format.
- Search the Store: use Open with > Search the Microsoft Store to look for an app if appropriate. A search result or an app that handles digital ink is not, by itself, proof of compatibility with this file.
- Ask for a usable copy: if the file’s creator cannot identify the app or format, ask them to resend it as PDF, PNG, or SVG if their original application supports that export. FileInfo describes export options for Inker, but available formats and steps may depend on the current app version.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows support information. Journal’s separately listed Windows 10 requirement is an app-specific requirement, not a statement that Windows 10 is still supported overall.
