The quickest method is built into your browser: open the .html or .htm file, open Print, choose a PDF destination such as Save as PDF, check the preview, and save. You do not need a physical printer or a separate converter for a normal one-off conversion.
What “open an HTML file as a PDF” means
An HTML file is a webpage document. A browser renders its markup, stylesheets, images and scripts; the Print command then creates a fixed PDF representation of that rendered page. The original HTML file is not changed.
This workflow works best when the file and its assets are available locally and the page does not depend on a server-side login or unavailable network resource. The PDF may not look exactly like the browser window because webpages can use different print styles.
Before you start
- Locate the file ending in
.htmlor.htm. - Keep any linked images, CSS files or fonts in the locations expected by the HTML.
- Use a current desktop version of Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
- Decide whether you need the whole document, selected pages, color backgrounds or a text-focused layout.
Chrome: save an HTML file as PDF
- Open the HTML file in Chrome. You can open it from your file manager or use Chrome’s file-opening controls.
- Choose File > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS.
- In the print dialog, select a PDF destination. Chrome commonly labels this Save as PDF.
- Review the preview and settings, then click Save and choose a filename and folder.
Check orientation, paper size, margins, scale, page range and background graphics before saving. The available labels can vary by operating system and Chrome version.

Firefox: save an HTML file as PDF
- Open the file in Firefox.
- Open the menu and choose Print….
- For Destination, choose Save to PDF.
- Set orientation, paper size, scale, margins, page range, color and header/footer options as required.
- Enable Print backgrounds when the design depends on colored sections, images or background graphics.
- Click Print, select a location and save the PDF.
Firefox may offer a Simplified format for text-heavy pages. It can make an article easier to read, but Mozilla notes that Simplified format cannot be combined with printing backgrounds.
Microsoft Edge: save an HTML file as PDF
- Open the HTML file in Edge.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, or choose Print from the menu.
- Review orientation, paper size, margins, scaling, page range and background graphics.
- Choose the system PDF destination. If Edge does not expose the option you need, select Print using system dialog and choose the operating system’s PDF printer.
- Save the resulting file.
The exact destination name depends on your operating system and installed print options.
Settings that control the result
Orientation and paper size
Use portrait for conventional documents. Landscape is often better for wide tables, dashboards and code. Choose the paper size your recipients expect, such as A4 or Letter.
Scale and margins
Reduce scale or margins when content is clipped at the right edge. Increase margins when text is too close to the page boundary. A browser may add page breaks in places that were not visible on screen, so inspect every page in the preview.
Background graphics
Colored panels, logos and some visual separators are implemented as backgrounds. Enable Chrome’s or Edge’s background-print option, or Firefox’s Print backgrounds, if those elements disappear.

Headers, footers and page ranges
Turn browser-generated headers and footers off when you do not want the page title, URL or date. Use a page range to export only the relevant section rather than deleting pages later.
When the PDF looks wrong
Content is cut off horizontally
- Switch to landscape.
- Lower the scale.
- Reduce margins.
- Check whether a wide table or fixed-width element is forcing the overflow.
Colors or panels are missing
Enable background printing. If the HTML uses a print stylesheet that intentionally removes decoration, the browser may be following that stylesheet rather than the screen design.
Images are missing
Confirm that image paths are correct relative to the HTML file. If the page references remote images, keep the computer online and wait for them to finish loading before opening Print. Broken local paths cannot be repaired by the PDF dialog.

Try another scale, orientation or margin setting. For a document you control, print-specific CSS such as page-break rules can improve the result; for a file you did not author, previewing several settings is usually the practical fix.
Fonts or icons look different
Allow web fonts and external resources to load before printing. If a font is unavailable, the browser substitutes another font, which can change line wrapping and page count.

The page is blank or only partly rendered
Wait for scripts and images to finish. If the HTML requires a local web server, opening it directly as a file:// URL may not provide the same behavior; run it through the project’s documented local server, then print that address.

Troubleshooting checklist
- No PDF destination: open the system print dialog and select its PDF printer, or try another installed browser.
- Wrong page size: set the intended paper size before saving; do not rely on the preview’s default.
- Missing background: enable background printing.
- Only some pages exported: clear an accidental page-range restriction.
- Local links fail: preserve the HTML folder structure and verify relative paths.
- Dynamic content is absent: wait for the page to finish loading, then reopen Print.
- PDF differs from the screen: compare print preview, change scale/orientation, and remember that print CSS can deliberately alter the layout.

Can I convert an HTML file on a phone?

Will the PDF preserve interactive behavior?
No. A PDF preserves the printed representation, not JavaScript interactions, form behavior or live links in the same way as the original webpage.
