Use ImageMagick’s mogrify command: open a terminal in the folder containing your WebP files and run magick mogrify -format jpg *.webp. ImageMagick writes a JPEG beside each matching WebP while leaving the original WebP files in place.
Test a few representative files first. JPEG cannot preserve transparency or animation, and existing JPEGs with the same basenames can create naming conflicts.
What the bulk command does
magick mogrify -format jpg *.webp applies the JPEG format to every WebP file matched by *.webp in the current directory.
- The source files remain as
.webpfiles. - New files use the original basename and a
.jpgextension. - The command processes only files matched in that folder; it does not automatically search every subfolder.
- Existing output files can be overwritten, depending on your ImageMagick version and command options, so inspect the folder before a large run.
Example
A folder containing hero.webp and team.webp should produce hero.jpg and team.jpg, while the two WebP files remain available.

Before you convert a whole folder
Make a small test set
- Copy three to five WebP files into a temporary directory.
- Include a photograph, an image with text or sharp edges, and any file that uses transparency.
- Run the batch command in that temporary directory.
- Open both versions and check detail, colors, dimensions, transparency and file size.
Check for naming collisions
If logo.webp and logo.jpg already exist, decide whether the new conversion should replace the JPEG, be stored in another directory, or receive a different name. Keeping a separate output folder is the safest approach for a large archive.
Identify animated WebP files
JPEG has no animation format. The available ImageMagick documentation does not establish a single, universal rule for whether an animated WebP becomes one frame, multiple JPEGs or another result. Check animated inputs separately and do not assume motion will survive conversion.
Install and run ImageMagick
Install a current ImageMagick package for your operating system, then verify that the magick command is available:
magick -versionOpen Terminal, PowerShell or Command Prompt and change to the source directory. For example, on systems with a standard shell:
cd /path/to/webp-folder
magick mogrify -format jpg *.webpOn Windows, use the equivalent folder path, such as cd C:UsersyouPictureswebp. If the shell reports that magick is not recognized, install ImageMagick or add its installation directory to your PATH, then open a new terminal.

For a single image, name both the input and output files:

Choose JPEG quality deliberately
JPEG quality is a compression trade-off. ImageMagick documents a scale from 1 (lowest quality and strongest compression) to 100 (highest quality and least effective compression). When ImageMagick cannot estimate input quality, its documented default is 92.

magick mogrify -quality 90 -format jpg *.webpNo single value guarantees a particular file size or visual result. A practical workflow is to convert a small sample at two or three settings, inspect photographs and text at 100% zoom, and compare file sizes before selecting one for the full folder. Lower values generally produce smaller files with more visible artifacts; higher values generally retain more detail while producing larger files.
Transparency: decide the background first
WebP can contain transparent pixels; JPEG cannot. Those pixels must end up as an opaque color in the JPEG. The supplied ImageMagick references identify alpha and background controls, but do not establish one verified flattening command for every WebP variant and ImageMagick build.
For reliable results, preview transparent files against the intended background, then test the exact command on those files. If the background matters—for example, a logo intended for a white page—check edges for halos and confirm that semi-transparent shadows still look correct.

Process subfolders safely
The basic wildcard handles one directory. For nested folders, use a script that creates a mirrored output directory rather than modifying source files in place. The exact recursive syntax differs between shells and operating systems, so first verify it on a small copy and preserve the original tree as a backup.
Another safe pattern is to gather the files into a staging directory, run mogrify there, and then move the resulting JPEGs to their final location. This makes it easier to review failures and avoid overwriting unrelated JPEGs.
Useful checks after conversion
- Compare the number of WebP inputs with the number of JPEG outputs.
- Open a random sample from the beginning, middle and end of the batch.
- Check pixel dimensions; a format conversion should not unexpectedly resize the image.
- Look for clipped text, color shifts, block artifacts and jagged transparent edges.
- Confirm that filenames are correct and that no existing JPEGs were unintentionally replaced.
- Record the quality setting and date if the files are part of a repeatable publishing pipeline.
Common problems and fixes
“No such file” or no files are converted
The wildcard is evaluated in the current directory. Run pwd (macOS/Linux) or cd (PowerShell) to confirm your location, list the files, and check the extension. A file named IMAGE.WEBP may not match lowercase *.webp in case-sensitive shells.
“magick” is not recognized
ImageMagick is missing or its executable is not on PATH. Install it, reopen the terminal, and run magick -version again.

The source likely contains transparency. JPEG cannot retain it. Test the image against the background color required by your destination and use a verified alpha/background workflow for your ImageMagick version before repeating the batch.
Files are much larger than expected
JPEG size depends on dimensions, image content, metadata and quality. Try a lower quality on a sample, remove unnecessary metadata only if your workflow permits it, and compare the visual result rather than targeting a fixed size.

The output looks soft or blocky
Increase the quality setting and inspect the original WebP. Repeated lossy conversions can compound artifacts, so keep the original WebP files as your master sources.
An animated image became a still image
That outcome is possible because JPEG is not animated. Treat animated WebPs as a separate case and use a format and workflow designed for motion if animation is required.

An existing JPEG was replaced
Matching basenames can collide. Convert a copied sample first, move outputs into a new directory, or rename existing JPEGs before processing the full collection.
