How to Open a Samsung Galaxy’s microSD Card Slot Safely

Use the ejector pin only in the hole on the outlined SIM/microSD tray. Samsung models differ, and not all support microSD, so check your exact model before opening or buying a card.

To open a Samsung device’s microSD slot, insert the ejector pin into the small hole on the outlined SIM/microSD tray and gently press until the tray pops out. This method works only on models with that kind of tray: Samsung says not all phone or tablet models support microSD. Check your exact model’s manual before using a tool or buying a card; some older or rugged models use a removable back cover and battery instead.

Find out whether your Samsung has a microSD slot

Samsung devices do not all support expandable storage, and tray layouts vary by model. Check the exact model number and its manual to confirm both microSD support and the slot’s location. If the tray has only a SIM opening, a microSD card will not fit there.

Some devices use a different design. Samsung’s instructions for the Galaxy XCover6 Pro, for example, access the microSD slot beneath the removable back cover and battery. Older removable-battery devices may use a similar arrangement. Follow the instructions for your model rather than trying to pry open a sealed device.

Open a tray-based microSD slot

  1. Locate the outline of the SIM/microSD tray along the device’s edge. The location and whether the tray holds one or both cards depend on the model.
  2. Use the ejector pin supplied with the device. Place its tip in the small eject hole that belongs to the outlined tray.
  3. Press straight and gently until the tray releases, then pull it out carefully.
  4. If the tray has a microSD opening, align the card with the opening’s shape and orientation. Do not force it; the card should sit in the tray as designed.
  5. Slide the tray back in fully and evenly.

Keep the ejector pin out of nearby microphone and speaker holes. Samsung warns that inserting it into those openings can damage the device. If the original tool is missing, Samsung says a replacement may be available from a carrier or electronics retailer; use the bundled tool if you have it.

Access a slot beneath a removable cover

For a model with a removable back cover and battery, use the model’s manual to find the correct opening procedure. Samsung’s XCover6 Pro instructions call for turning off the phone, removing the back cover and battery, and then accessing the microSD slot. Do not apply that procedure to a device whose cover is not designed to come off.

Remove a microSD card safely

Before physically removing a card, unmount it in Settings so the device is not reading or writing to it. Menu names and paths differ by model and software version. Search Settings for “storage” or consult the manual if your device does not show the path you expect. Once the card is unmounted, use the appropriate tray or removable-cover procedure for your model.

If the tray or card will not come out

  • Check that you are pressing the eject hole on the tray outline, not a microphone or speaker opening.
  • Keep the tool straight and press gently. Do not twist it, pry at the tray, or increase force.
  • If the tray remains stuck or appears damaged, stop and contact Samsung service or an authorized repair route. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends service for a stuck card or tray.

Formatting does not open a slot and can erase files. It is not a first step for a stuck card; if formatting is needed for a separate card problem, back up important data first.
