The important catch is that a location shown by a photo app may be an estimate or a place added later—not coordinates embedded in the original image.
First check whether the photo has a location
In Google Photos on a computer, open the image and select Info to view its details. Google Photos on Android also provides photo-location management and a Places/map view. Exact controls can vary by platform and app version.

A location shown in Photos can come from different sources. Google says a photo may have a location because the camera saved it, because someone added a location, or because Photos estimated it using landmarks and other photos. The help page notes: “Your photo may have a location if your device’s camera saves your location with the photo.” A displayed place name alone does not prove that the original file contains GPS coordinates. Read the coordinates from the image file
If the photo app shows only a place name or map, use a metadata viewer that reads the image’s EXIF GPS tags. For example, Cloudinary’s Photo Location Viewer describes reading GPS information from a photo in a browser and provides an option to open the result in Google Maps.

Before using an online viewer, consider whether you are comfortable uploading that image to the service. If it is personal or sensitive, choose a local metadata tool that reads the file on your device instead. Photo-management software can also be useful when you need to inspect or edit location data across a collection: Corel’s PaintShop Pro version 22 documentation describes a Map Mode for viewing and editing GPS details, entering coordinates, and copying location information between images. That is a version-specific example, not a universal interface; see Corel’s PaintShop Pro Map Mode documentation.
Search the coordinates in Google Maps
- Copy the latitude and longitude from the photo’s details or metadata viewer.
- Open Google Maps and paste them into the search box with latitude first, then longitude, separated by a comma. For example:
41.40338, 2.17403. - Submit the search to view the point on the map. Google Maps also accepts degrees-minutes-seconds (DMS) and degrees-decimal-minutes (DMM), as well as decimal degrees. Its coordinate guidance is at Google Maps Help.
Latitude and longitude are easy to reverse accidentally. If the point appears in the wrong part of the world, check the order and confirm that both values were copied completely.

Create a direct Google Maps link to the point
For a shareable link or an automated workflow, Google Maps URLs can open a map centered on a coordinate pair. Google documents the map action with a center latitude/longitude pair and requires api=1 in Maps URL requests. URL punctuation may need encoding when you build the link for a web page or automation. Follow the documented format in Google Maps URLs.

Why coordinates might be missing
- Location tagging was off: the camera may not have saved location data when the photo was taken.
- Metadata was removed: an app, export, or sharing step may have stripped embedded EXIF data from the copy you have.
- The app is showing an estimate: a suggested or displayed place can help orient you, but it is not the same as recovering a GPS tag from the original file.
If the original image has no GPS tags, Google Maps cannot recover its original coordinates from the photo alone. You can use a displayed estimate as a clue, but treat it as an estimate rather than camera-recorded GPS.

Consider location privacy before sharing
Depending on how you share a photo, Google Photos may include camera-provided or manually added location details. Google provides controls for location sharing in shared albums and conversations; review the options in its photo-location help before sharing sensitive images. Hiding metadata does not conceal an identifiable landmark or other visual clues in the picture itself.
