How to Open a GIFT City Account for Global Investing

A GIFT City account may mean an IFSC bank relationship, securities access through an intermediary, or an IFSC fund investment. Choose the route, confirm residency eligibility and provider terms, then complete the provider’s current KYC and due-diligence process.

First choose what you want to open: an account with an IFSC Banking Unit, a securities-access account through a capital-markets intermediary, or a subscription to an IFSC fund. Then confirm that the provider and route accept your residency category, check the provider’s current requirements, and complete its application and due diligence. “GIFT City account” does not describe one universal account or a single application process.

What does “GIFT City account” mean?

GIFT City is in India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). Financial services there are regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), which publishes separate information for banking, capital-market intermediaries and fund management. The phrase “GIFT City account” can refer to different financial relationships, so identify what you will own or subscribe to and which legal entity will provide the service before applying.

Route What it is What to check before applying
IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) account A banking relationship with an IFSC Banking Unit. Whether and how it may be used for investment depends on the applicant’s status, applicable rules and the bank’s terms. Eligibility, permitted uses, funding and withdrawal methods, currency, minimums, charges and account terms.
Global Access through a capital-markets intermediary A route for accessing global markets through an intermediary under an IFSCA framework. It is not necessarily the same as opening a bank account. The exact regulated entity, available markets and instruments, custody arrangement, fees, eligible clients and countries, and complaint process.
IFSC fund subscription An investment in a scheme managed by an IFSCA-regulated Fund Management Entity (FME). This is a fund investment, not necessarily a self-directed securities account. The scheme’s offer documents, investor eligibility, minimum investment, strategy, fees, liquidity, risks and dealing terms.

IFSCA’s capital-market materials list the Global Access framework dated 12 August 2025. Its fund-management materials list the 2025 regulations and associated FAQs; the IFSCA listing accessed on 4 October 2026 showed amendments through 10 September 2026. A framework or regulation does not tell you every provider’s fees, product range or customer terms: check the live documents for the specific service and scheme.

How to open the right account or investment route

  1. Define the service you need. Decide whether you want a banking relationship, access to securities through an intermediary, or an investment in a fund. Ask the provider what account, custody or subscription relationship you would actually enter into.
  2. Tell the provider your residency and customer category. Do this before filling out an application. The route, documents, permitted funding and eligibility can depend on your status. IFSCA’s listings include a circular titled “Opening of an account of a person resident in India,” dated 13 August 2025. The listing alone does not establish the circular’s operative eligibility, funding or limit rules, so do not assume that a route is available—or unavailable—to you based only on the title.
  3. Verify the exact regulated entity and activity. Use IFSCA’s regulated-entity directory to check the legal entity that will provide the service and whether its authorization covers that activity. Do not rely only on an app name, introducer or brand. IFSCA’s public alert says: “Always deal with IFSCA regulated entities.”
  4. Get the provider’s current checklist and complete its checks. Ask for the latest application, accepted identity and address evidence, verification method, source-of-funds requirements and any additional documents. Complete the provider’s identity verification and due diligence before expecting the account or investment to be opened.
  5. Review the written terms, then fund through the confirmed route. Confirm the permitted funding account and currency, any minimum or charges, withdrawal path, and the product’s applicable terms. Only proceed after the provider confirms the route is available to your customer category.

What documents and checks might be involved?

There is no single document checklist established for every bank, intermediary, fund or applicant category. Use the chosen provider’s latest checklist rather than copying documents from another institution’s form.

For example, HDFC Bank’s GIFT City IBU terms describe due diligence and KYC, including identity, address and photograph information, and say the bank may request further information or documents. The terms also require customers to notify the bank if their residency status changes. These are HDFC’s terms for its account, not a universal IFSCA checklist; the bank makes operation subject to applicable RBI and IFSCA rules as amended.

A separate ICICI Bank joint-applicant form illustrates why customer-category details matter: it is expressly labeled for NRI/PIO/OCI applicants and includes visa-country and visa-expiry fields. That form is version 2.0, effective February 2024, and may have been superseded. Neither example establishes the documents required by another provider or for a different applicant category.

Questions to settle before you submit an application

Ask the provider for answers in writing where possible. Compare the complete service, not just a claim of “global access.”

  • Eligibility: Does the provider accept your country of residence and customer category for this particular product?
  • Who holds or executes the investment: Which legal entity is your counterparty, and how are the account, securities or fund units held?
  • Investment scope: Which markets and instruments are available, or what is the fund’s mandate?
  • Full cost: What are the minimums, account or transaction charges, fund fees, currency-conversion costs and any other applicable charges?
  • Money movement: Which accounts and currencies can be used to fund the investment, and how do withdrawals or sale proceeds return to you?
  • Rules and reporting: What tax, foreign-exchange and reporting obligations may apply to your residence and chosen product? Get advice for your circumstances rather than treating a provider’s general description as an individualized conclusion.
  • Risk and recourse: What risks, liquidity limits and complaint or dispute channels apply to the specific account, intermediary or scheme?

These details are provider- and product-specific; the fact that a service operates in an IFSC does not establish a universal minimum, fee schedule, tax outcome, investor protection or funding entitlement.

Can an Indian resident invest globally through GIFT City?

Do not infer an answer from the existence of a GIFT City product or from an application form for a non-resident category. IFSCA’s listing confirms a resident-account circular dated 13 August 2025, but its title alone does not establish who may use a particular route, how it may be funded, or what limits apply. Before applying or transferring money, ask the provider to identify the current rules and documents that govern your residency category and the exact product. Confirm any applicable FEMA, RBI or other requirements independently for your case.
