What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Measure each video’s integrated loudness in LUFS, choose one target for material that should sound alike, and apply a uniform gain adjustment to each file. Then check true peaks and listen to transitions. Don’t force every quiet soundscape to the same dynamic shape: if a gain increase creates unsafe peaks, consider a lower shared target or gentle limiting instead.
There is no single LUFS target established here for every relaxation livestream. The right choice depends on the destination platform, its ingest requirements, and whether you want consistent playback level or intentional contrast between segments.

What to measure: loudness and peaks are different
Peak normalization sets a file’s highest peak to a chosen level. It does not make the overall loudness of different videos consistent. Integrated loudness, measured in LUFS, is more useful for comparing the perceived overall level of complete programs; true peak is a separate check on potential overload.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with uniform gain changes rather than compression. Raising a quiet clip toward a target may push its peaks too high; in that case, a limiter can control peaks, but it may change the sound. For relaxation material, preserve the natural dynamics unless there is a clear reason to alter them.

Choose a target that fits the stream
Choose a target based on the platform’s current live-ingest specifications and the listening experience you want. The references below are useful context, not interchangeable requirements or universal relaxation-stream settings.
| Reference | Figure and context | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| EBU R 128 v5.0 | -23 LUFS average programme loudness; European Broadcasting Union, 2023. EBU R 128 | A broadcast reference, not a blanket internet livestream instruction. |
| AES TD1008 v3.13 | -16 LUFS for track normalization in the specified music-streaming context, including automatically assembled streams. The reviewed PDF excerpt does not establish a publication date. AES standards search | An online music context; do not assume it governs every platform or ambience program. |
| Audacity manual | -23 LUFS is the software’s perceived-loudness default; its manual says streaming platform targets are usually a few LU higher than broadcast. Audacity Loudness Normalization | A software default and general note, not a target tailored to this stream. |
Before processing, decide whether all segments should feel similarly present or whether, for example, sleep ambience should remain quieter than a brighter nature loop. Record your chosen target and the reason for it so future additions are treated consistently.

Normalize prerecorded videos step by step
- Group comparable material. Separate videos with intentionally different roles if preserving their contrast matters. Decide whether you are matching a stream-wide level or retaining planned variation between segments.
- Measure each complete asset. Use an integrated-loudness meter and the same measurement method for every file. Record integrated LUFS and true-peak readings. Integrated measurement covers the whole file; it can conceal a quiet opening or a brief loud passage.
- Calculate the initial gain offset. Subtract the measured LUFS from your chosen target. For example, a file at -27 LUFS and a chosen target of -23 LUFS starts with a +4 dB gain adjustment. This is arithmetic, not a prescribed target for relaxation streams. Measure again after processing.
- Check true peaks after raising gain. If peaks become unsafe or the adjustment calls for aggressive limiting, try a lower shared target first. If needed, use gentle peak control and audition transients and quiet passages to confirm the sound remains natural.
- Listen to transitions in sequence. Check each clip’s beginning and end against its neighbors. A whole-file average can hide a jump at a boundary or a long quiet opening. Short-term metering can help locate a problem, but the reviewed sources establish no short-term target for relaxation streams; make the decision by listening in context.
- Protect the output bus. Monitor the stream output for unexpected overload. A restrained limiter may serve as a safety stage, but listen for pumping, noise becoming prominent, or ambience swelling during quiet sections. Continuous processing cannot predict later material and may override intentional dynamic changes.
- Review the encoded stream and playback. Encoding, platform processing, and playback controls can affect what listeners hear. Check representative playback after encoding rather than treating file measurements as proof of the final result.
Use real-time processing only as a safety net
A global real-time processor can help control unexpected output variation, but it cannot substitute for matching prerecorded assets in advance. Strong automatic adjustment can make ambience audibly pump or erase planned quiet-to-loud changes. Match files first, then keep any live processing restrained and monitor its effect.

That viewer-side feature is not a creator-side loudness target for an outgoing livestream. It does not remove the need to prepare and check the stream mix.

- Files have similar peaks but sound uneven: peak matching is not loudness matching. Compare integrated LUFS, then apply consistent gain offsets.
- A quiet clip clips after normalization: its peaks may not leave enough headroom for the required gain. Lower the shared target or use modest limiting, then listen for changed transients.
- The average looks right but a transition jumps: whole-file integrated loudness can hide local differences. Audition the opening and ending in sequence and adjust the relevant asset or transition.
- Quiet sections sound noisy or swell: real-time gain control may be raising low-level material. Reduce its action and preserve more of the source dynamics.
- Stereo image shifts after normalization: avoid normalizing ordinary stereo channels independently. Audacity’s manual warns that separate channel normalization can change stereo balance.
- Listeners report inconsistent playback despite matching files: check the encoded output and representative playback path. Viewer controls and playback systems may affect perceived level independently of your mastering.
