Use Unicode NFC as the default way to normalize Indian-language text for general search, applying the same defined behavior to both indexed text and queries. Keep the original text, and treat compatibility folding, language-specific substitutions, tokenization and transliteration as separate search decisions: each can improve some matches but may also create false matches or lose distinctions.
What does text normalization fix in search?
The same text can sometimes be represented by different sequences of Unicode code points while remaining canonically equivalent. A search system that compares those sequences as raw bytes or code points may fail to match them. Unicode normalization gives canonically equivalent strings a consistent representation; the Unicode Consortium’s FAQ says programs should compare canonically equivalent strings as equal and that normalizing them makes their binary representations the same.

Normalization is not spelling correction. It does not by itself repair OCR errors, keyboard mistakes, spelling variants, or every difference between a user’s query and a document. Those require separate retrieval or language-processing decisions.

For stored general text and a conservative search key, NFC is the sensible starting point. The Unicode Consortium describes NFC as the best form for general text, in part because it is more compatible with strings converted from legacy encodings. NFC resolves canonical-equivalence differences without the broader compatibility folding performed by NFKC or NFKD.

| Choice | What it is for | Search trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| NFC | Canonical normalization; recommended baseline for general text by the Unicode Consortium. | Consistent representation for canonically equivalent strings while retaining compatibility distinctions. |
| NFKC or NFKD | Compatibility normalization, which removes certain compatibility distinctions. | May support selected looser matching, but can lose information and create matches that a user or language needs to distinguish. Apply only under a documented search policy, not blindly to arbitrary text. |
Unicode Standard Annex #15, version 18.0.0 Revision 58, dated 2026-08-12, also documents Indic-script composition exclusions, including Devanagari letter QA and precomposed nukta letters in Bangla/Bengali, Devanagari, Gurmukhi and Odia/Oriya. This is a reminder that normalization follows Unicode’s defined rules; it is not a general-purpose Indic spelling or character-substitution system.
How should you design the normalization pipeline?
- Preserve the original. Retain the text as received for display, auditing and any later processing. A search key should not replace the source text, particularly if you experiment with potentially lossy compatibility transformations.
- Choose a baseline and apply it consistently. Normalize indexed content and incoming queries with the same defined Unicode behavior, starting with NFC for general text. Ensure the indexing and query paths use compatible implementations and settings.
- Define broader equivalences separately. For every compatibility fold or script- or language-specific substitution, write down which forms are intended to match and what distinctions could be lost. Keep such behavior limited to the search representation unless there is a separate, justified reason to alter displayed content.
- Configure the engine as one part of the policy. Elasticsearch documents
hindi_normalizationandindic_normalizationfilters; its ICU normalizer supportsnfc,nfkcandnfkc_cf. These are implementation options, not proof that a filter alone handles every language or corpus. Confirm exact behavior for the Elasticsearch version you deploy. - Test the complete path. Check that ingestion and query processing agree, and evaluate retrieval changes against examples from your own target languages, scripts and corpus before deploying a broader transformation.
Why can a Hindi search miss a word that looks the same?
Visual similarity does not guarantee identical code-point sequences or identical behavior under a search analyzer. A canonical-equivalence difference is a normalization issue; a spelling variant, a script-specific form, a token boundary or a Romanized query may require a different solution. Unicode normalization is deterministic, but it does not infer that two visibly similar forms should always count as the same word.

Indic writing also makes simplistic character-by-character processing risky. Combining marks, conjuncts and orthographic syllables can matter to how text is segmented or compared. A 2023 paper by Ansary and colleagues proposes a normalizer and grapheme parser for Indic languages; it is a research approach, not evidence of one universally suitable production implementation. Treat grapheme-aware processing and tokenization as separate from NFC or NFKC, and validate them for the scripts and content you actually serve.

How should you handle Romanized and cross-script searches?
Transliteration is a separate retrieval problem, not a Unicode normalization form. A Romanized query may have multiple plausible mappings, and transliteration systems make different choices about standards compliance, coverage, pronunciation and reversibility. If Romanized or cross-script input matters, select and name a transliteration system or model, record the language and script variants it handles, and decide explicitly whether to use query expansion, parallel search fields or another retrieval design.

Aksharantar’s 2022 paper by Madhani and colleagues describes a dataset of 26 million transliteration pairs across 21 Indic languages and 12 scripts, and reports the IndicXlit model. Those dataset and model details do not establish that any one mapping will improve search for a particular corpus. Test ambiguous and non-reversible cases, and retain a path to the original text for display.
What should you test before changing search normalization?
Build a regression set for every target language and script, then compare the current analyzer with each proposed transformation. Record both successful matches and unwanted matches; better recall is not an improvement if it collapses distinctions readers rely on.

Decide using four questions: what equivalence the transformation covers, what information it preserves, which languages and scripts the engine handles, and whether the output must round-trip or be displayed to users. NFC is the conservative baseline for content; compatibility folding, language-aware substitutions and transliteration are search policies whose value depends on tested queries and the cost of false matches.
