How to Normalize Audio Levels Across Files Before a YouTube Playlist Stream

A practical two-pass FFmpeg workflow for matching perceived loudness across files before turning the finished audio into a YouTube playlist stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Normalize each file separately to the same integrated-loudness target and true-peak ceiling, then remeasure the rendered files and listen to playlist transitions. FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter supports a two-pass workflow: analyze each complete file, then use those measurements when processing it. The target is a production choice—not a universal YouTube requirement.

Why matching peaks is not enough

Two tracks can have similar sample peaks yet sound very different in perceived loudness. For a playlist that moves between files, measure integrated loudness across each complete file and apply a shared target. FFmpeg’s loudnorm also exposes loudness-range and true-peak controls, which help you make a more informed adjustment than peak matching alone. Loudness matching does not make the tracks’ dynamics identical.

Choose a target for the program

Decide on a common integrated-loudness target and maximum true-peak ceiling that suit the material and intended listening experience. YouTube’s published upload-encoding recommendations cover audio formats and delivery settings; they do not set a universal playlist-wide integrated-loudness target. Do not treat FFmpeg’s parameter defaults or allowed ranges as a recommendation for every program.

Keep intentional differences in dynamics in mind. A spoken-word recording, music track, and quiet ambient passage may not benefit from being made to sound equally dense. The aim is to avoid distracting jumps while preserving the character of the source material.

Normalize files with FFmpeg’s two-pass workflow

1. Prepare and inventory the source files

  • Keep untouched copies of the originals so you can redo the process or compare the result.
  • Confirm which audio stream you intend to use in each file, especially if a container includes multiple audio tracks.
  • Group files that belong to the same listening program and note their intended playlist order.

2. Analyze each complete file

Run FFmpeg’s loudnorm analysis on each full file using the same target integrated loudness, loudness range, and true-peak settings you plan to use for the whole program. Record the filter’s reported measurements for each file: input integrated loudness, loudness range, true peak, and threshold. Use the measured values from that file—not values copied from another track—for its normalization pass.

FFmpeg documents double-pass operation for files; it also documents single-pass operation for files or livestreams. For this offline playlist-preparation workflow, the analysis pass gives you the measurements needed to guide the second pass. See the FFmpeg filters documentation for loudnorm for the installed filter’s options and output fields.

3. Normalize each file to the shared settings

Process each file with the same target integrated loudness and maximum true-peak settings, supplying that file’s measurements from the analysis pass. This makes the chosen target consistent across the set while allowing the filter to account for the characteristics of each input.

Do not assume the result will always be gain-only. FFmpeg states that linear normalization requires measured input values and may switch to dynamic normalization if the requested loudness change cannot satisfy the loudness-range or true-peak constraints. The behavior depends on the source and chosen settings; verify what the filter reports rather than promising that every file will be processed in linear mode.

  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

4. Remeasure and audition the rendered files

  • Analyze the output files again using consistent settings. Confirm that the rendered loudness and true peak are acceptable for your chosen targets.
  • Listen to the files in playlist order, paying particular attention to the start and end of each track and to jumps between adjacent tracks.
  • If one transition still sounds abrupt, assess whether the source material, an edit, or a different target is responsible. A loudness reading cannot tell you whether a transition feels musically or editorially right.

Check stereo phase and mono playback

Before publishing, check that stereo audio is in phase and remains intelligible when heard in mono. YouTube warns that poor mono compatibility can reduce audio quality or mute audio when stereo is converted to mono. This is especially worth checking if listeners may use mono playback devices. See YouTube’s upload audio and video troubleshooting guidance.

Package the audio as a video for YouTube

YouTube does not accept an audio file by itself as a video upload. Combine the finished audio with an image using video-editing software, then export a video file. YouTube’s recommended upload settings include AAC-LC or Opus audio, a 48 kHz sample rate, and stereo or supported multichannel configurations. YouTube re-encodes uploaded videos, so inspect the uploaded result as well as your local render. Check the current YouTube recommended upload encoding settings and video upload guidance before exporting, since platform recommendations can change.

Do not rely on YouTube playback leveling to prepare the files

YouTube’s Stable volume feature, where available, is a viewer-side playback control that balances loud and quiet playback. It is not a source-file normalization workflow. Prepare and check the files themselves rather than expecting a playback feature to make the inputs to your playlist consistent.

Troubleshooting

Some tracks still sound louder despite similar peaks

Sample peaks do not describe perceived loudness across a whole file. Compare complete-file integrated-loudness measurements and use the same target settings for every track.

The filter does not use linear normalization

Linear mode needs measured input values and may not be able to meet the requested loudness, range, and true-peak conditions together. Check the filter’s reported mode and measurements; do not assume the output is gain-only.

A transition sounds jarring after normalization

Recheck the files in playlist order. Shared loudness targets do not align edits, remove silence, or make different material sound alike. Decide whether the transition needs an editorial adjustment rather than changing settings blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The uploaded video sounds different or has an audio issue

YouTube re-encodes uploads. Check the exported file’s codec, sample rate, and channel layout against the current upload recommendations, then inspect the processed upload and troubleshoot phase or mono-compatibility issues if present.
