Negotiate a Salesforce software engineer offer by first confirming the exact job level and work location, then comparing the full package—not just base pay—with recent, like-for-like evidence. Make one specific, respectful counterproposal grounded in the role’s scope and your experience, and get any revised terms in writing.
What should you confirm before negotiating?
Start with the offer details and the role it represents. Salesforce says U.S. compensation is determined by factors including location, job level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The company’s careers page states: “In the United States, compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, job level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.” Salesforce’s careers guidance does not publish an individual candidate’s pay band or internal negotiation rules.

Confirm the role’s internal level and work location before treating any compensation benchmark as a comparison. “Software engineer” covers multiple levels; Salesforce postings may use titles such as Associate MTS, MTS, Senior MTS, or Lead MTS. Ask whether the offer reflects the level discussed during interviews and the responsibilities described for the position.
- Base salary and whether it is annualized.
- Target annual bonus, including whether it is guaranteed or performance-based.
- Equity grant value and share count, if specified, plus the vesting schedule and valuation assumptions.
- Signing bonus, payment date, and any repayment condition in the offer documents.
- Work location, start date, title, and internal level.
These are distinct package elements. Levels.fyi presents base, stock, and bonus separately, and treats signing bonus as a one-time payment distinct from recurring bonus. Do not assume that a benchmark’s equity vesting display or bonus terms apply to your offer; use the actual offer documents and ask the recruiter to clarify anything unclear. Levels.fyi’s Salesforce software-engineer page is a comparison source, not a substitute for your contract terms.

What is a good Salesforce MTS offer?
There is no single “good” MTS offer independent of location, level, experience, and package structure. The figures below are United States platform-reported figures from Levels.fyi, whose Salesforce software-engineer page was last updated October 3, 2026. They are directional context based on employee submissions reviewed by Levels.fyi, not Salesforce-published pay bands or a promise about an individual offer.
The page reports 4,686 Salesforce software-engineer salary submissions across its broader sample; that total should not be read as the observation count for every level below. Level figures shown here are displayed averages, whereas the site separately gives median figures in its FAQ.

| Level (U.S.) | Average total compensation | Average base | Average stock per year | Average bonus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Associate MTS | $178,000 | $145,000 | $21,000 | $12,000 |
| MTS | $193,000 | $169,000 | $17,100 | $7,100 |
| Senior MTS | $268,000 | $211,000 | $32,900 | $24,600 |
| Lead MTS | $313,000 | $242,000 | $43,000 | $28,600 |
For the broader U.S. software-engineer sample, Levels.fyi reports median yearly total compensation of $248,500 and average yearly total compensation of $263,064 for 2026. The average can be more affected by the largest packages than the median. The same page reports a $28,000 median signing bonus; that is a one-time amount based on reported submissions, separate from recurring annual bonus. Do not compare that signing-bonus figure as if it were recurring pay or combine these medians with the level averages as though they were the same measure.

Use benchmarks only after matching country or region, level, role family, and a recent time window as closely as possible. These figures are U.S.-only; they do not establish what is competitive in another country or for a different location, and they are self-reported platform data that can change as submissions are added.

Should you negotiate base salary, RSUs, or a signing bonus?
Compare recurring value separately from first-year value. A signing bonus may raise first-year cash but does not recur. Base salary is recurring cash, while target bonus can be contingent on performance or other offer terms. Equity should be evaluated from the actual grant and vesting terms rather than an assumed schedule.
- Base salary: Consider whether it aligns with the level, location, responsibilities, relevant experience, and credible local comparisons.
- Target bonus: Clarify the target amount and whether it is guaranteed, variable, or subject to performance conditions.
- Equity: Ask for the grant value, share count if available, vesting schedule, and valuation assumptions. A public benchmark’s example vesting display does not establish your terms.
- Signing bonus: Clarify amount, payment timing, and any repayment condition in the written offer.
Choose the component that matters most to you and explain why. You can ask whether flexibility exists in another component if a preferred item is constrained, but do not assume Salesforce can or will move compensation from one category to another. Available sources do not establish which component is most negotiable or the company’s approval process.

How do you make a credible counterproposal?
Build the request around evidence rather than a generic claim that the offer is below market. Salesforce advises candidates to review the job description and connect their skills and experience to its qualifications. Use the responsibilities and level in that description, relevant experience, and well-matched compensation evidence. If you have a competing offer, describe it honestly and share details only if you are comfortable doing so.

- Confirm the level, location, base, target bonus, equity and vesting, sign-on amount, start date, and any conditions in writing.
- Work out recurring annual compensation separately from first-year compensation, including any one-time sign-on payment.
- Choose a specific package or component to request and prepare a concise explanation tied to role scope, experience, and credible comparisons.
- Present one clear counterproposal, then ask which components have flexibility.
- Request a revised written offer and review all terms before accepting.
A useful message can be short: “Thank you for the offer. I’m excited about the role and the team. Based on the scope of the position and my experience in [relevant area], I was hoping we could discuss [specific component or package target]. Could you let me know what flexibility there is? I’m happy to talk through the details.” Replace the bracketed language with accurate specifics; do not invent competing offers or market data.
What if the recruiter says the offer is fixed?
Ask whether any other component can be reviewed, without presuming that it can. If there is no flexibility, decide based on the written package, role, location, and your alternatives. Do not treat an informal verbal indication as a changed offer: review a revised document for the exact amounts, dates, equity terms, and conditions before accepting.
How should you handle recruiting communications?
Use the recruiter contact details and official Salesforce careers information to verify anything unexpected. Salesforce’s hiring-fraud guidance says: “We will never ask you to pay money, provide banking details, or buy your own equipment.” The careers page says most conversations are virtual and an on-site interview is required before an offer; confirm current process details with the recruiter because hiring procedures can change.
