Both methods return a promise; provide navigation options such as waitUntil, timeout, or signal when the default wait is not right for your page.
Go back or forward in the active tab
Call the method on the Puppeteer Page whose history you want to traverse:

const forwardResponse = await page.goForward();goBack() targets the previous history entry; goForward() targets the next. Each resolves to the main resource response when there is one. For a same-page navigation, the result is null. If no history entry exists in the requested direction, the method throws. See the Puppeteer Page.goBack() reference for the documented behavior.
Wait for the traversal without a race
If your code needs to coordinate a history action with a navigation wait, start both together. Puppeteer warns that starting waitForNavigation() only after the triggering action can miss the navigation.

]);Use page.goForward() in place of page.goBack() to coordinate a forward traversal. The same concurrent-wait pattern applies to other actions that may navigate. See the waitForNavigation() reference.
Choose navigation wait options
Both history methods accept optional WaitForOptions. The documented default timeout is 30,000 milliseconds, and the default waitUntil condition is 'load'. You can pass a different lifecycle condition, a timeout, or an abort signal:

});When waitUntil is an array of lifecycle events, the wait completes after all of them have fired. To change the default navigation timeout for the page, use page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(timeout). The WaitForOptions reference documents timeout, signal, and waitUntil; the page timeout reference covers the page-level setting.
What happens with single-page applications
A URL change made through the History API counts as navigation in Puppeteer even if the browser does not fetch a new document. A history traversal in a single-page application may therefore produce navigation-related behavior without a traditional document response. Account for the possibility that the method resolves to null rather than a main-resource response.

Troubleshooting
- No history entry: If the page has nothing to go back to or forward to, the requested method throws. Navigate to another entry first, or handle the exception where history depth is not guaranteed.
- The wait times out: The default wait uses the
loadevent and a 30,000 ms timeout. Choose an appropriatewaitUntilcondition or adjust the method timeout or page-level navigation timeout for the expected page behavior. - The navigation wait misses the change: Register the wait before triggering the traversal by awaiting both in
Promise.all(). - The response is null: This is documented for same-page navigation; do not assume every History API URL change produces a fetched main document.

The official Page API reference cited here identifies Puppeteer version 25.12.0. The separate goForward() documentation is under the /next/ path, so check the API documentation for the Puppeteer version installed in your project.
