This makes the image’s subject and capture time clear without opening it, avoids accidental overwrites, and sorts chronologically by filename.
A practical naming scheme
Organize first by site, then by page or capture purpose. Put the changing capture time in the filename:

2026-10-03T22-00-00Z.pngThe timestamp uses year-month-day order and UTC, so names sort in time order and remain unambiguous across teams and time zones. The trailing Z identifies UTC. Colons in ISO-style times are replaced with hyphens for portability to systems with restrictive filename rules.

Choose what each part of the name means
Site and page or purpose
Use a stable, filename-safe site identifier, such as example-com, and a label that identifies the page or capture purpose, such as homepage, pricing, or header. Avoid names such as screenshot.png, which reveal neither the subject nor which scheduled run produced the file.
Timestamp and timezone
Use one timestamp format throughout the archive. UTC is a straightforward default for automated runs and teams in multiple time zones. If you use local time instead, document the timezone and daylight-saving behavior; otherwise two captures can be hard to order or compare.
Viewport, scope, and environment labels
When a schedule captures multiple variants, add a stable label before the timestamp, for example:

Keep labels and dimensions consistent across runs when you intend to compare images. Decide whether a capture is viewport-only or full-page and treat that as part of the capture definition. Playwright supports full-page screenshots of scrollable content. Playwright Screenshots documentation.

For visual regression comparisons, include browser and platform or project identity when those differences matter. Browser version, operating system, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering, so keep a baseline tied to the environment that produced it. Playwright Test supports configuring snapshot path templates. Playwright visual comparisons documentation.
Keep scheduled archives separate from regression baselines
An archive is a historical record of what a site looked like over time. A visual regression baseline is an expected image associated with a test and its rendering environment. They serve different purposes, so store them separately rather than mixing scheduled history into the test runner’s baseline directory.
- Scheduled archive: use a site-first hierarchy, with page or purpose beneath it and a timestamp for every retained run.
- Regression baseline: use the test runner’s snapshot structure and path configuration; preserve the relevant browser and platform or project identity.
Playwright’s screenshot API accepts a path and can capture the full page; its visual comparison documentation describes configurable snapshot paths and environment-related rendering variation. Screenshots and Visual comparisons.
Decide how much history to keep
Retain every run
Use unique timestamped filenames when you need an audit trail or want to inspect changes over time. Confirm that your scheduler writes a new path for each distinct capture; the behavior depends on the scheduler, so do not assume it will prevent overwrites.

Maintain a latest copy
If a downstream process needs a predictable filename such as latest.png, keep that as a separate convenience copy or pointer. Preserve timestamped historical files elsewhere if you need history. A repeated fixed filename by itself will generally obscure or replace earlier output, depending on how the capture process writes files.
Choose a site-first or date-first hierarchy
Site-first folders make it easy to follow one page across time, which suits the example convention above. Date-first folders can be more convenient when reviewing all captures from one scheduled run. Choose according to how you retrieve files, and apply the choice consistently.
Set a consistent format and capture scope
Keep the image format consistent within a collection unless a specific downstream use requires otherwise. Playwright CLI documents PNG as its default and lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP output options. That does not establish one universally best format for every archive; consider what your viewers and later processing tools accept. Playwright CLI documentation.

Implement the convention in Playwright
For Playwright Test visual snapshots, configure the snapshot path template when the default layout is not suitable, using the test runner’s documented path configuration. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation. For a scheduled archive using Playwright’s Node.js API, build the path from stable identifiers and a UTC timestamp, then pass it to page.screenshot:

To produce a full-page capture, set fullPage: true and use a distinct stable label such as full-page in the directory or filename. Record extra metadata without bloating filenames
Keep filenames readable: site, page or purpose, any essential variant label, and timestamp are usually enough. If you need additional details such as viewport dimensions, browser version, or capture configuration, save them in a sidecar manifest or index. This is an organizational option, not a manifest format prescribed by Playwright.

- Choose one normalized identifier for each site and stable labels for pages or purposes.
- Choose a timestamp format and timezone; use UTC unless the workflow has a documented reason not to.
- Decide whether each run is retained or whether a separate latest copy is maintained.
- For visual baselines, record browser and platform or project, and keep comparison environments consistent where possible.
- Use a consistent image format and viewport-versus-full-page choice for each capture type.
- Check that the scheduled process has permission to write to its output directory and does not reuse one filename for distinct captures.
Troubleshooting naming and archive problems
New captures replace older files
Check whether the scheduled job writes a fixed name such as screenshot.png. Generate a unique timestamped filename for every retained run, or intentionally keep a latest-only output separate from the archive.

Files sort in the wrong order
Use zero-padded year-month-day and time components in a consistent timezone. Avoid forms such as month-day-year, which do not sort chronologically as text, and avoid mixing UTC with undocumented local times.
Similar images appear different in a regression check
Verify that browser, platform or project, viewport, and capture scope match the baseline. Rendering can vary across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; keep the environment identity with the baseline. Playwright visual comparisons documentation.
The scheduled file is missing
Check that the scheduler’s process can write to the chosen path and that the parent directories exist or are created. Also inspect the job’s exit status and screenshot output path. Exact scheduler behavior varies by tool and is not established by Playwright’s screenshot naming guidance.
