What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can mute a word, phrase, username, emoji, or hashtag in X’s settings to filter matching posts from your Home timeline, Notifications, or both. The filter is configurable and can expire after a set period, but it does not hide matching posts from search.
What muting words on X does
Muted words filter posts that contain the text you specify. You can apply an entry to your Home timeline, Notifications, or both. Depending on your notification settings, X also describes filtering matching content from push, SMS, and email notifications.

Matching is case-insensitive, and muting a word also mutes its hashtag form. You can include punctuation within a word or phrase, but punctuation at the end is not needed. To filter posts that refer to a particular account, include the @ sign; this filters matching posts rather than muting the account itself. X says the feature supports its supported languages. See the X Help Center guide to advanced muting options for the current details.
How to mute a word on X
Add entries one at a time. The setting names and layout may change as X updates its apps, but the documented paths are:

- Add an entry and choose whether it applies to the Home timeline, Notifications, or both.
- Choose the notification source scope and duration, then save.
Choose a duration and scope
The available durations are Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days. Forever is the default. Pick a shorter duration for a temporary topic and Forever for a recurring filter you intend to keep.
Keep the scopes distinct: selecting Home timeline filters matching posts there; selecting Notifications filters matching notifications. Choose both if you want the entry to cover both areas. Notification source options determine which notification channels are covered.

What muted words do not hide
- Search results: Matching posts can still appear when you search for them; muted words do not filter search.
- Some mobile post alerts: If you opted in to mobile notifications when an account you follow posts, X says you may still receive those alerts even when the post contains a muted word.
- Every possible occurrence: The filter matches specified text in posts; it is not an account-level block or a guarantee that all related discussion disappears.
X says notification filtering also applies to replies and mentions, including interactions on those replies and mentions. Its help page notes that entries have a maximum character count but does not state the numeric limit, so check the current interface if your entry is unusually long.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChange or remove a muted word
- Return to Muted words using the app or web path above.
- Select the entry you want to change.
- Adjust its timeline or notification scope and duration, then save; or choose the delete option to remove it.
Choose the right mute control
| Control | Use it for | What it affects | What remains visible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muted words | A recurring word, phrase, username, emoji, or hashtag | Home timeline, Notifications, or both, as selected; duration is configurable | Matching posts can still appear in search |
| Mute an account | One account’s posts | That account’s posts in your timeline; replies and mentions behave differently depending on whether you follow the account | Muting does not unfollow or block the account and does not prevent Direct Messages |
| Mute a conversation | Notifications from one active thread | Stops new notifications about that conversation | The posts remain visible in the timeline and when you open the original post |
For account muting details, see X’s guide to muting accounts. If unwanted alerts are the issue but do not fit a word, account, or thread, X also has a quality filter and advanced notification filters; these control other kinds of notifications and are not identical substitutes for muted words. See About the Notifications timeline and How to control your X experience.
