There is no direct ChatGPT Memory-to-Claude import procedure documented in the official OpenAI and Anthropic guidance reviewed. You can still carry over useful personalization: review what ChatGPT remembers, make a concise note of facts and preferences you want Claude to use, then add it to Claude’s profile preferences or the relevant project instructions. Treat this as a manual, user-reviewed transfer—not an automatic migration.
What you can—and can’t—transfer
ChatGPT’s saved memories are separate from chat history. ChatGPT can also use information drawn from past conversations, and its Memory summary is only a high-level view: OpenAI says it “does not retain every detail from every conversation.” A downloaded account archive is therefore not a clean, memory-only file intended for Claude.

OpenAI’s documented conversation-transfer feature is for using exported conversations as reference in another personal ChatGPT account. It does not merge accounts or move memories, settings, subscriptions, files, GPTs, or workspace access; it is not a Claude import feature. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT account conversation-transfer guidance.

- Review ChatGPT’s memory controls. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Review the controls and available memory summary. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers, but check the answer against the information you actually want to carry over: the summary may not include everything the system can use. OpenAI explains the distinction in Memory in ChatGPT.
- Decide whether you need a full account export. If you only need a few preferences, you can write them down without downloading your entire account archive. For an export, use Settings > Data controls > Export data, confirm the request, and follow the notification to download the ZIP. OpenAI says processing can take up to seven days and the download link expires 24 hours after delivery. The ZIP includes chat history and other relevant account data, not just saved memories. Details are in OpenAI’s export instructions.
- Inspect the ZIP locally, if you requested it. Identify the few stable preferences or facts that would help Claude. Do not treat every past conversation as a memory to migrate. OpenAI warns that exports can contain sensitive account information, so keep the archive and expiring download link secure.
- Write a short context note you have reviewed. Include only information you want Claude to use, such as preferred response style, ongoing work conventions, or durable background relevant to your use. Remove passwords, private keys, sensitive personal details, irrelevant history, and anything you do not want retained.
- Put each item in the appropriate Claude control. Use profile preferences for guidance that should apply across conversations, or project instructions for context that belongs only to one project. Claude styles are intended to guide response format and tone. Anthropic documents these options in Claude’s personalization features.
- Check the result in a new Claude conversation. Ask Claude to apply the preferences to a relevant task, then correct your note if it misinterprets them. The two products may not use or interpret context in the same way.
Choose the right destination in Claude
| Claude control | Best fit for | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Profile preferences | Stable guidance you want applied broadly, such as preferred level of detail or recurring response conventions | Account-level guidance |
| Project instructions | Facts, goals, terminology, and working rules specific to a project | That project |
| Styles | Response format and tone | Style guidance; not a substitute for project facts |
Anthropic’s guidance also describes past-chat search for a rollout cohort. Its availability may depend on account rollout and plan; it is not evidence of a direct ChatGPT Memory import. The controls above are destinations for context you select and enter, not a supported cross-vendor memory migration.

Export eligibility and account differences
ChatGPT’s in-product data export is available to eligible consumer accounts. OpenAI says self-service export is not available for Business and Enterprise workspaces; Edu export may depend on administrator enablement. Consumer users can also submit a request through the OpenAI Privacy Portal. If your account is managed by a workspace, check its controls or ask the workspace owner.
If you later need a copy of Claude data, that is a separate export—not a way to import ChatGPT memories. Anthropic says exports are available to individual Free, Pro, and Max users with active accounts and to Primary Owners of specified Claude for Work plans. Individual users and Team Primary Owners can request one at Settings > Privacy on Claude web or Claude Desktop; Enterprise Primary Owners use Settings > Data management. Export is not available from Claude mobile apps, and Anthropic says the download link expires 24 hours after delivery. See Anthropic’s Claude data export guidance.

Keep the transfer narrow and private
- Move stable, useful context—not complete transcripts by default.
- Review each item before adding it to Claude, especially information about other people or sensitive personal matters.
- Keep any downloaded ZIP and its time-limited link secure; do not upload the full archive to Claude merely to find preferences inside it.
- Revisit Claude’s profile or project instructions when your preferences change, rather than assuming they will stay synchronized with ChatGPT.
