If you’re keeping the same phone, select the new app as your default SMS app in Android Settings, then check that your conversations and attachments appear. If you’re moving to a different phone, use the new phone’s setup-time copy or restore a Google backup instead. These are separate tasks: changing the default app does not itself transfer messages to another handset.
Change messaging apps on the same Android phone
Android stores SMS and MMS data in its Telephony provider. The platform documentation says that “Only the default SMS app (selected by the user in system settings) is able to write to the SMS Provider.” (Android Developers: Telephony API reference) Selecting a new default app is a settings change—not an export-and-import or backup-and-restore process.

- Install or open the messaging app you want to use.
- Open Settings and look for Apps > Default apps, then the default SMS app option. Menu names and locations can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer.
- Select the new app and accept the system prompt if one appears. Android provides a system settings screen for changing default handlers, including the SMS handler. (Android Developers: Permissions used only in default handlers)
- Open the selected app and check several older conversations, including any media or attachments you need.
- Send and receive a test SMS. Keep the previous app installed until you have confirmed the new one works as you expect.
Android’s platform role for the default SMS app does not guarantee that every third-party app will display every historical message or message type identically. Check your own conversations rather than assuming the new app presents all history in the same way.
Move messages to a different Android phone
For a new handset, use the transfer option offered during its setup, or restore an available Google backup. Keep the old phone until you have checked the new one: Google advises clearing the old device only after confirming that the data has copied. (Google Android Help: Switch to a new Android device)

Option 1: Copy from the old phone during setup
- Keep the old phone available and unlocked. Connect both phones to the internet and charge them; Google recommends backing up first and following the new phone’s setup prompts. (Google Android Help: Switch to a new Android device)
- When prompted on the new phone, choose the option to copy apps and data from the old Android device.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Depending on the devices, the transfer may offer a cable or Wi-Fi connection; the options vary by device. (Google Android Help: Switch to a new Android device)
- After setup, open the messaging app and inspect older conversations and media before resetting or giving away the old phone.
Option 2: Restore a Google backup
If the old phone is unavailable, or you prefer a cloud restore, use a prior Google backup during the new phone’s setup. Google says Android device backups include SMS and MMS; RCS messages are backed up when you use Google Messages. What restores can also depend on the app and device. (Google Android Help: Back up or restore data on your Android device)
- During setup, choose the restore option and select the Google account and backup you intend to use.
- Allow the restore and any message syncing to finish, then open the messaging app and check conversations and attachments.
- Keep the old phone intact until you have confirmed the messages you need are on the new phone.
Google says a Google One phone backup can take up to 24 hours, but that is not a guaranteed restore time. Check the backup status before relying on it. (Google Android Help: Back up your phone)

Choose the right transfer route
| Situation | Route to try | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| You’re changing apps but keeping the same phone | Change the default SMS app in Android Settings. | This is not a phone-to-phone transfer. Verify that the new app displays the history and media you need. |
| You have the old phone and the new phone is still in setup | Use the setup-time copy option. | Google describes cable or Wi-Fi transfer, with options varying by device. (Google Android Help) |
| You can’t use the old phone, but a Google backup is available | Restore the backup during setup. | SMS/MMS are included in Android device backup; RCS backup is documented when using Google Messages. (Google Android Help) |
| You’re unsure whether messages copied | Open conversations and inspect older messages and media before wiping the old phone. | Do not treat setup completion alone as confirmation that all needed data is present. |
If messages are missing after a phone transfer
- Check Android versions. Google says a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version. Using an older-version target phone can result in an incomplete transfer. (Google Android Help: Back up or restore data on your Android device)
- Allow time for backup and restore. Check the backup status and let setup or syncing finish before deciding that messages are absent.
- Check the connection and retry. If setup transfer fails, Google recommends troubleshooting the connection; you may need to restart the transfer or use a cloud backup. Post-setup transfer options depend on the device and Android version. (Google Android Help: Can’t transfer data to a new Android device)
- Account for app and device limits. Google notes that not all apps back up or restore all settings and data. Organization-managed devices may also restrict backup of work data. (Google Android Help; Google Android Help: Learn more about Google Play services for data backup and transfer)
- Keep the old phone until you verify. Check the specific conversations and attachments you need on the new phone before resetting, trading in, or recycling the old one.
