How to Move Files from a Windows PC to an iPad: 7 Practical Methods

Use Apple Devices for a direct transfer, iCloud Drive for files across devices, or external storage for offline copies. Here are seven PC-to-iPad methods and their setup steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a one-time transfer on Windows 10 or later, use Apple Devices and a USB cable: select the iPad, open Files, choose a compatible app, and add the files. They will be available in that app—not automatically throughout iPadOS. For files you want kept up to date across devices, use iCloud Drive; for offline transfers, use an external drive or SD card.

Choose a transfer method

Method Best for Where files appear Connection
Apple Devices File Sharing A direct, one-time copy The selected iPad app USB; Wi-Fi after setup
iCloud Drive Access and updates across devices Files app and iCloud Drive Internet and an iCloud account
Third-party cloud storage Using a cloud account you already have Files app, once the provider is connected Internet; provider setup may be required
External drive or SD card Offline transfer Files app or another compatible app Drive/card and possibly an adapter
PC file share Browsing a shared folder on your local network Files app Same reachable network
iTunes File Sharing An older Windows setup already using iTunes The selected iPad app USB

Apple’s current instructions for Windows 10 or later use Apple Devices for direct file sharing. The receiving iPad app must support both File Sharing and the file type. If you want to open a file in different apps or keep it in a generally accessible location, use a Files location such as iCloud Drive, external storage, or a server instead.

1. Transfer files with Apple Devices over USB

  1. Install and open Apple Devices on a PC running Windows 10 or later. Connect the iPad with a USB or USB-C cable. Unlock the iPad and tap Trust if it asks whether to trust the computer.
  2. In Apple Devices, select the iPad, then choose Files.
  3. Select an app in the File Sharing list. Apple Support says, “If you can’t see a Files section, your device has no file-sharing apps.”
  4. Add files to the selected app, or drag them into its file area. Choose only files that app supports, then open them in the app on the iPad.
  5. Eject the iPad in Apple Devices before disconnecting it.

Important: Files transferred this way belong to the selected app’s File Sharing area. Apple says they cannot be accessed from other apps or locations on the device. If you delete the receiving app, its shared files—and their copy in the Apple Devices backup—are deleted too. Copy anything you need to keep back to the PC or another location before removing the app. Apple’s Apple Devices transfer guide and File Sharing requirements and troubleshooting explain the workflow and limitations.

2. Use Apple Devices File Sharing over Wi-Fi

Apple documents connecting an iPad to Apple Devices over Wi-Fi, but Wi-Fi syncing requires an initial cable connection and setup. It is a convenience for later connections, not a guaranteed cable-free first-time method.

  1. Connect the iPad to the PC by cable and select it in Apple Devices.
  2. Open General, turn on Show this [device] when on Wi-Fi, and select Apply.
  3. After setup, keep the PC and iPad on the same Wi-Fi network. Select the iPad in Apple Devices when it is available, then use Files to transfer files as you would over USB.

See Apple’s instructions for syncing over Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi syncing and ongoing cloud storage are different: Wi-Fi provides a network connection to the PC, while a cloud service can keep files available across devices.

3. Use iCloud Drive for files you want across devices

  1. On the PC, use iCloud for Windows and add the file to iCloud Drive.
  2. On the iPad, open Files and select iCloud Drive in the sidebar.
  3. Tap the file to open it. If you need it available offline, use Keep Downloaded where that option is available.

iCloud is intended to update content across Windows and Apple devices as it changes. A file stored in iCloud Drive is not necessarily downloaded to the iPad for offline use. See Apple’s iCloud Drive for Windows guide and Apple’s guide to accessing iCloud Drive files.

4. Use another cloud storage provider

  1. Upload the file from the PC using the cloud provider’s Windows app or website.
  2. On the iPad, open Files and tap the sidebar’s More menu.
  3. Enable or set up the provider if needed, then select it under Locations to browse the file.

Apple lists Box and Dropbox among the services Files can access. A provider may require its iPad app or account setup, and subscription fees may apply. See Apple’s guide to connecting storage and cloud services in Files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Transfer offline with a USB drive or SD card

  1. Copy the files from the PC to a USB drive or SD card.
  2. Eject the storage safely from Windows, then connect it to the iPad. Depending on the iPad’s port and the storage connector, you may need an adapter.
  3. Open Files, browse the connected drive under Locations, and copy files to the iPad or open them with a compatible app.

Drive, connector, and format compatibility can vary. Apple documents that USB-C iPad models can use Files to format an external drive as APFS, ExFAT, or MS-DOS (FAT); this should not be assumed to apply to every iPad. Check the iPad port and drive requirements before choosing a drive or adapter. Apple’s external-storage guide covers connecting drives and cards.

6. Connect to a shared PC folder on your network

This method is useful if the PC already has a folder shared on a local network. The PC must be reachable, and the shared folder must be configured before you connect from the iPad.

  1. On the iPad, open Files and open the sidebar’s More menu.
  2. Choose Connect to Server and enter the server’s local hostname or network address.
  3. Choose Guest only if the PC allows guest access. Otherwise choose Registered User and enter the credentials for the share.
  4. Select the shared folder or volume to browse its files.

These are the iPad connection steps; Apple’s cited guide does not explain how to configure Windows folder sharing. See Apple’s guide to connecting to a file server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix common transfer problems

  • Apple Devices has no Files section: Install an iPad app that supports File Sharing. Apple Devices only lists apps with that capability.
  • A transferred file will not open: Confirm the selected app supports that file type. File Sharing does not make an app compatible with files it cannot read.
  • The iPad does not appear on the PC: Check the cable and connection, unlock the iPad, and respond to any trust prompt. If it remains missing, follow Apple’s device-visibility troubleshooting guidance.
  • An external drive is missing: Check that it is connected securely and that the connector or adapter fits the iPad. Drive and format compatibility can vary; Apple’s documented USB-C formatting options do not establish support for every drive and iPad combination.
  • You plan to delete an app that received shared files: First copy those files to the PC or another safe location. Deleting the app also deletes its shared files and the Apple Devices backup copy.
