How to Move Files Between Folders on Android

Use Files by Google to move one or more files into an existing or new folder on Android, or choose an SD card or USB device as the destination.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Files by Google, select the file or files, tap Move to, choose a destination folder, then tap Move here. To move files into a folder that does not exist yet, create it during the move and confirm with Move to folder. The exact labels can differ in other Android file manager apps.

Move files into an existing folder

These steps use Files by Google. You can find a file through a category or by browsing Internal storage. Google’s instructions for this workflow are in its guide to moving files to an existing folder in Internal storage.

  1. Open Files by Google and locate the file. Browse Internal storage or open the relevant category.
  2. Select the file. In grid view, press and hold it. In list view, tap More beside its name.
  3. Choose Move to. If you want to move several files together, select the additional files before choosing this action.
  4. Open the destination folder in Internal storage.
  5. Tap Move here to finish.

If you selected multiple files, the same destination-selection flow applies; Files by Google lets you select and move several in one operation.

Create a destination folder while moving

You do not need to leave the move workflow to create a folder first. Google’s instructions for moving files to a new folder in Internal storage describe this sequence:

  4. Tap Move to folder to complete the move.

The new folder is created at the location you navigated to. Check that location before confirming if you have similarly named folders or nested folders.

Move files to or from external storage

Files by Google also documents workflows for SD cards and USB storage. These are alternatives to moving files between folders in Internal storage; access depends on the storage being available to the phone and app.

SD card

In Files by Google, select the file or files, choose Move to, tap SD card, then select a folder or create one and confirm with Move here or Move to folder. Follow Google’s USB storage instructions for the access flow.

Internal storage Choose an existing folder, or create one during the move. Documented in Files by Google’s existing-folder and new-folder instructions.

If the destination or file manager looks different

  • You cannot find the file: Look in the relevant category or browse Internal storage in Files by Google. Google’s Files by Google overview explains the app’s general file-browsing workflow.
  • The screen does not show the same buttons: The steps and labels here are documented for Files by Google. Other Android file manager apps may use different menus or wording; look for an action such as Move or Move to and a destination picker.
  • The SD card is missing: Check in Android Settings whether the phone recognizes it. A card set up as internal storage may not be listed as a portable SD card in Files by Google.
  • The USB device is unavailable: Confirm that it is connected and that you have allowed Files by Google to access it. Compatibility can depend on the phone hardware and connection.

For a move within Internal storage, the key decision is simply whether to relocate the item with Move to or preserve the original with Copy to; external storage adds the separate requirement that Android and the connected storage make the destination available.
