How to Move Data From One Samsung Galaxy to Another: Wireless, Cable, and Backup Options

Use Samsung Smart Switch to move supported data to a new Galaxy. Choose wireless or cable, prepare both phones, and verify app-specific data before retiring the old device.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Samsung Smart Switch to move supported data from your old Galaxy to your new one. On the new phone, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch and tap Receive data. On the old phone, tap Send from this phone. Choose a wireless or cable transfer, select what to copy, and check the important data on the new phone before you wipe or trade in the old one. Menu labels can vary by model and software version.

Choose how to transfer your data

Smart Switch is Samsung’s main supported way to move compatible content to a Galaxy phone. Pick a direct wireless or wired transfer if both phones are available. A computer or supported external storage can serve as an intermediate backup when a direct connection is unsuitable.

Method Best suited to What to know
Wireless Smart Switch Moving data without a cable or adapter Samsung’s US instructions say to keep the phones within four inches and plug them into chargers. Samsung Australia says the connection uses Wi-Fi Direct, so it does not need mobile data or local Wi-Fi. The transfer can take time depending on the data and connection; the app displays an estimate. (Samsung US; Samsung Australia)
USB cable A wired transfer, including a large collection when the devices support it Use a compatible data cable; some phone combinations need a USB-OTG adapter. Samsung Canada recommends wired transfer for larger amounts of data, but this is not a universal speed guarantee. A wired connection may prevent charging during the transfer, so start with enough battery. (Samsung Canada; Samsung US)
PC or Mac Creating an intermediate backup or retrying after a direct transfer problem Install Smart Switch for desktop, back up the old phone, then connect the new Galaxy and restore the backup. Follow Samsung’s computer instructions for the supported connection and software. (Samsung UK)
Supported microSD card or USB storage Using external storage as an intermediate backup Smart Switch can back up to and restore from supported storage. Check that both the phone and storage method are compatible and that the storage has enough capacity; not all Galaxy phones have a microSD slot. (Samsung US; Samsung Caribbean)

Transfer directly between the two Galaxy phones

Before you start

  • Install or update Smart Switch on both phones and make sure each has adequate battery. Samsung Australia recommends using the latest mobile app; Samsung Caribbean warns that low battery can interrupt a transfer. (Samsung Australia; Samsung Caribbean)
  • Check free space first. Samsung UK specifies at least 500 MB of free internal storage on each device for a Smart Switch transfer. (Samsung UK)
  • If using a cable, check both phones’ ports and use a compatible data cable. Some combinations require a USB-OTG adapter. Samsung UK also says wired transfer requires support for USB “Transferring media files (MTP).” (Samsung US; Samsung UK)

Start the transfer

  1. On the new Galaxy, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch. Tap Receive data, then choose the old device type if prompted.
  2. On the old Galaxy, open Smart Switch and choose Send from this phone.
  3. Choose Wireless or Cable on both phones. For wireless, keep the phones close together and follow the connection prompt. For cable, connect them using the compatible data cable and any required adapter.
  4. Confirm the connection on the phones. Review the available content and select everything, a limited set of content, or a custom selection as the app offers.
  5. Start the transfer and leave the phones connected until Smart Switch reports that it has finished. The time varies with the amount of data and connection; use the estimate shown in the app rather than assuming a fixed duration. (Samsung US; Samsung UK)

Samsung’s US guidance favors wireless for a practical reason: the phones can remain plugged into chargers. Samsung Canada, meanwhile, recommends a wired connection for larger transfers. Treat these as method-specific guidance, not a promise that one method will always be faster on every pair of phones. (Samsung US; Samsung Canada)

What Smart Switch can—and cannot—move

Depending on the phones, software versions, and transfer route, Smart Switch may copy contacts, calendar entries, reminders, messages, notes, call history, bookmarks, photos, music, videos, documents, settings, and compatible third-party apps. Samsung’s guides also list items such as voice memos, Wi-Fi settings, alarms, and home-screen layout for supported devices. The choices shown during setup depend on device compatibility; Smart Switch does not necessarily copy everything. (Samsung Australia; Samsung Caribbean; Samsung Canada)

Samsung Galaxy Official USB-C to C Data Cable, 1.0m, Black
  • USB-C to C Cable for up to 25W Charging Speeds
  • Get it in black or white to suit your style and device
  • Encrypted app data: Samsung UK says secure or encrypted data, including WhatsApp chats, does not transfer through the general Smart Switch process. Use the app’s separate migration or backup process for that data. (Samsung UK)
  • App accounts and credentials: App data held on a provider’s servers is generally retrieved by signing in. Some apps may need manual installation, and Smart Switch may not carry login details such as banking credentials. Save or back up app-specific data as directed by the app provider before switching.
  • DRM-protected content: Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot be transferred with Smart Switch. (Samsung UK; Samsung Caribbean)

If Smart Switch cannot complete the move

Connection or compatibility problems

  • For wireless, move the phones closer and follow the on-screen connection instructions. Samsung US specifies a distance within four inches; regional instructions may simply say to keep them close. (Samsung US)
  • For cable, verify that the cable supports data transfer, that the phone ports match, and whether the pair needs an OTG adapter. Check MTP support for a wired transfer. (Samsung US; Samsung UK)
  • Make sure both devices have enough battery and the required free storage. If the selected content will not fit, transfer smaller groups in stages or use supported SD storage if the devices allow it. Samsung Australia describes splitting items or using supported SD storage when a device cannot create a backup of all selected content at once. (Samsung Australia)

Use an intermediate backup

If a direct phone-to-phone transfer remains unavailable, use Smart Switch for PC or Mac to back up the old phone and restore to the new one, or use supported external storage. Check model compatibility and available capacity before choosing an external-storage route. Samsung documents phone, computer, and supported external-storage workflows. Verify the new phone before retiring the old one

On the new Galaxy, check the data you rely on most: contacts, recent photos and videos, messages, and any app-specific information that uses a separate backup or migration process. Open important apps and confirm you can sign in and retrieve server-stored data. Keep the old phone intact until these checks are complete; a transfer-complete message does not establish that every app’s protected or account-specific data has moved.
