One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo move cryptocurrency safely, generate a receive address for the exact asset in your hardware wallet’s official companion app, verify that address on the device itself, then withdraw the same asset over a network supported by both the wallet and exchange. For a large transfer, send the exchange’s minimum withdrawal first and confirm it arrives before sending the rest.
Before you start: confirm the asset and network
Check that your hardware wallet supports the specific cryptocurrency and the network you intend to use. The exchange’s withdrawal network must match the network supported by the receiving wallet; an asset name or similar-looking address is not proof of compatibility. Binance warns that choosing the wrong network may mean funds are lost and cannot be recovered: Binance’s withdrawal guide.

Set up the wallet using its official instructions before opening the exchange withdrawal form. If it is a new wallet, complete setup and make its recovery backup as instructed by the manufacturer. Keep that backup offline: Trezor advises against photographing it or typing it into a phone or computer: Trezor’s backup guidance. A transfer requires your public receive address, never your recovery phrase or backup.
How to withdraw crypto to the wallet
- Open the wallet’s official companion software and connect or unlock the device. Select the account for the exact asset you plan to receive.
- Choose Receive. Generate or display the receiving address for that asset and network.
- Verify the address on the hardware wallet’s screen. Compare the full address shown on the device with the one in the companion app. The device screen provides a check independent of the connected computer or phone. Trezor and Ledger both instruct users to verify receive addresses on the device: Trezor’s exchange-to-wallet guide and Ledger’s Bitcoin receiving instructions.
- Copy or scan the verified address into the exchange withdrawal form. Avoid reusing an address copied from transaction history without checking it; lookalike, address-poisoning scams can replace a familiar destination with a similar-looking one.
- Select the matching asset and network at the exchange. Review the withdrawal minimum, fee, amount expected to arrive, and any required memo or tag. Some asset and network combinations require an extra identifier; follow the exchange’s current instructions.
- Check every detail before confirming. Compare the full destination address with the device, and check the asset, network, amount, fee, and memo or tag. Submit only when they are correct.
- Save the transaction ID (TXID) or withdrawal record. Use the exchange’s official status and the relevant blockchain explorer to track it. Do not submit a duplicate withdrawal just because the first is still pending.
Binance’s guide explains that the withdrawal flow displays the network fee and final amount, and that confirmation time varies with the blockchain and current network traffic: Binance’s withdrawal guide. Check the current withdrawal screen for your exchange, asset, and account rather than relying on a fee or timing example from elsewhere.

Send a test before moving a large amount
For a substantial transfer, first withdraw the minimum amount the exchange permits. Wait until it appears in the hardware wallet, then send the remainder to the same verified destination. Trezor recommends this approach for exchange withdrawals: Trezor’s exchange-to-wallet guide. A successful test helps confirm the address and network were selected correctly, but it does not replace checking the details of the later withdrawal.
If the exchange asks you to verify wallet ownership
Some exchanges may request proof that a destination is a self-hosted wallet. Coinbase documents that local Travel Rule requirements can prompt verification. Its help page describes message signing for some ERC-20 assets and a small-deposit test for other blockchain networks; the deposit test requires sending the exact requested amount from the wallet to a Coinbase-generated address and may incur network fees: Coinbase’s self-hosted wallet verification instructions. This is Coinbase’s documented process, not a universal requirement for every exchange or account.

Common transfer mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the wrong network: use only a network supported by both the exchange withdrawal and the destination wallet. Similar address formats, including EVM-style addresses, do not by themselves establish that a particular wallet setup supports the transfer.
- Pairing the wrong asset and address: do not send one cryptocurrency to an address for another. Trezor gives Bitcoin Cash sent to a Bitcoin address as an example, and Ledger warns that sending non-Bitcoin assets to a Bitcoin address can typically cause permanent loss.
- Trusting an unchecked clipboard address: confirm the destination on the hardware device and recheck it before every withdrawal. A previous transaction’s address can be replaced in transaction history by a similar-looking address.
- Skipping a test transfer for a large withdrawal: send the exchange minimum first and wait for it to arrive before transferring the balance.
- Sharing the recovery backup: the exchange needs the public receive address, not the wallet’s recovery credentials. Keep the backup offline as directed by the wallet maker.
- Leaving out a required memo or tag: check the current exchange instructions for the specific asset and network before submitting.
Choosing a hardware wallet for exchange withdrawals
Before choosing a device, verify support for the exact asset and network you plan to receive. Also consider whether the receiving address can be checked on the device screen, whether the setup and backup instructions suit you, and whether the companion software works with your computer or phone. Those compatibility and usability checks matter more for this transfer than a general claim that one wallet is best. Exchange interfaces, supported networks, fees, withdrawal minimums, account restrictions, and regulatory prompts can vary by asset, account, and jurisdiction; consult the current official instructions for your specific combination.
