Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Moving an installed app is more limited: it works only when the device and app expose a move option. First check that your exact phone or tablet has a microSD slot, then choose portable or internal storage if your device offers both. Back up the card before formatting because formatting erases its contents.
Check whether your Android device supports a microSD card
Look up your exact phone or tablet model before buying a card or changing storage settings. Not every Android device has a microSD slot, and supported card capacity and requirements vary by model. Samsung, for example, notes that not all Galaxy devices support microSD and provides model-specific guidance at its microSD support page.

Samsung lists microSD cards as up to 2 GB, microSDHC as over 2 GB through 32 GB, and microSDXC as over 32 GB through 2 TB. These are card-format capacity ranges, not a guarantee that a particular device accepts every card in a range. Check the device maker’s specifications for the maximum capacity and card requirements before purchasing.

Choose portable or internal storage
When a new card is detected, Android may offer different ways to format it. Google’s Android Help describes portable storage and internal storage, also known as adoptable storage. What is available depends on the device and software.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Increase your TV show, movie, and Full HD video[4] recording collections dramatically with up to a massive 1.5TB[1].
- Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].
| What you need | Portable storage | Internal or adoptable storage |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Store files such as photos and videos | Store files and, on supported devices, install apps |
| Move the card to another device | Yes, according to Google | No; the card is tied to the device |
| Install apps on the card | No | Possible on supported devices |
| Format the card | Erases the card’s data | Erases the card’s data |
For portable storage, choose “Format” when prompted. To use the card as internal storage, choose “Format another way” if that option appears. Google explains the modes and setup in Get started with an SD card. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage, so Galaxy users should not expect that option.
Back up the card before formatting
Formatting permanently deletes data on the card. Copy anything you want to keep to another location before formatting or changing the card’s storage mode. Google’s setup guidance includes a prompt to move content now or later after formatting a new card; the available choices and menu names can vary by device.

- [NOT compatible with Switch2] Please note that this product is not a microSD Express card and is not compatible with Switch2 for game storage or save data. If used in the Switch2, it may only support limited functions such as storing screenshots or videos, but will not allow game installation or save file access.
- High compatibility for different types of devices including smartphones, tablets, Drones, Android Tablets, Tablet PCs, Action Cameras, DSLR and 4K or Full HD camcorder.
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch *In order to use a microSDXC card on the Nintendo Switch console, a system update is required.* See Nintendo official site for more details
- 5-year limited manufacturer warranty
To format a card on a supported Samsung software flow, Samsung documents this path: Settings > Battery and device care > Storage > SD card > More options > Format. Menu labels and locations can differ by model and software version; consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your device. Google also documents card settings under Settings > Storage > SD card and storage settings, but the exact path varies.
Move photos and other files to the SD card
Using Files by Google
Files by Google supports moving or copying files to an SD card on Android 8.0 and up. Its instructions are available at Move or copy files to your SD card.

- Open Files by Google and find the file in Categories or Storage devices.
- Select the file or files, then tap More > Move to or Copy to.
- Select the SD card and choose an existing destination folder, or create one.
- Confirm the move or copy.
The app’s Clean tab may also show a “Move to SD Card” card when that option is available.
Using Samsung My Files
- Open My Files and select the file or files you want to transfer.
- Tap Move or Copy, then choose SD card.
- Select a destination folder and tap Move here or Copy here.
Files transferred this way are managed through My Files. Samsung says encrypted music and other purchased content cannot be moved to external storage.

- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Ideal storage for Android smartphones and tablets
- Up to 128GB to store even more hours of Full HD video (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less. Full HD (1920x1080) video support may vary based upon host device, file attributes, and other factors. See official SanDisk website.)
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute (Up to 140MB/s read speed, engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, require compatible devices capable of reaching such speed. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes. Based on internal testing on images with an average file size of 3.55MB (up to 3.7GB total) with USB 3.0 reader. Your results will vary based on host device, file attributes, and other factors.)
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance (A1 performance is 1500 read IOPS, 500 write IOPS. Based on internal testing. Results may vary based on host device, app type, and other factors.)
Move an app only if Android offers the option
Moving an installed app is not the same as moving a photo or download. Whether an app can be relocated depends on the device and the app; some developers disallow it, and preloaded apps may not be movable. A move option also does not guarantee that every app or all of its data will run from removable storage.

- Open Settings > Apps.

If Change does not appear, Samsung says the app cannot be moved using this feature. The steps apply only to Galaxy devices that support microSD and expose the option.

Other Android devices
Do not assume the Samsung menu path applies to another manufacturer’s phone. Check the device maker’s support page and the app’s storage settings. If there is no move or change control, the device or app does not provide that relocation option; avoid unsupported workarounds.
Quick Recap
What to do if storage is still low
- Move personal files such as photos, videos, and downloads to the card; portable storage is intended for files, not app installation.
- Check which apps or file categories use the most internal space, then remove items you no longer need or move eligible files.
- Use an app move option only when it appears for that particular app and device.
- If your device has no microSD slot, an SD card cannot expand its built-in storage. Look for storage-management options supported by the manufacturer rather than assuming an external card can be used for apps.
