How to Move Apps and Files to a microSD Card on an Android Tablet

Move files to a microSD card with a file manager, and check app storage settings to see whether your Android tablet allows an app to move.

First check that your tablet has a microSD slot and supports removable storage; support varies by model. On a Samsung Galaxy tablet, move files in My Files. To check whether an app can move, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage and look for Change. That option appears only when the app and tablet support moving it.

Before you start: check the tablet and card

Not every Android tablet accepts a microSD card, and supported card types and capacity limits are model-specific. Check the tablet’s specifications or manufacturer support page before buying or inserting a card. A card’s speed or capacity does not make an app eligible to move if the tablet or app does not support it.

Moving files and moving apps are separate tasks. A file manager can copy or move items such as photos and documents to removable storage. App movement depends on the tablet’s storage features and on whether the app allows its storage location to change.

How to move files on a Samsung Galaxy tablet

  1. Insert a compatible microSD card.
  2. Open My Files and find the files or folders you want to transfer.
  3. Touch and hold an item to select it; select additional items if needed.
  4. Tap Move to transfer the originals, or Copy to leave the originals where they are.
  5. Return to My Files Home, then open SD card.
  6. Open the destination folder and tap Move here or Copy here.

Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by carrier and software version. On a tablet from another manufacturer, use its file manager and instructions rather than assuming the Samsung labels or steps are present. Samsung’s instructions are on its microSD support page.

How to check whether an app can move

  1. Open Settings, then tap Apps.
  2. Select the app and tap Storage.
  3. If Change is shown, tap it, select SD card, tap Move, and follow any prompts.

If Change is missing, Samsung says the app’s storage location cannot be changed using this method. Preloaded apps cannot be moved this way, and an app developer may disallow SD-card storage, including for performance reasons. A different or faster card will not override that restriction.

These are Galaxy instructions, not a universal Android menu path. Android’s adoptable-storage feature can allow supported apps to be moved, but device makers decide whether to offer that mode. Samsung states, “Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature.” For another brand, check the exact tablet model and software version in the manufacturer’s documentation.

Portable storage and adoptable storage are different

Android Help describes two storage modes. Portable storage is intended for files and can be moved between devices; it does not install apps. Adoptable storage can hold files and apps as an extension of a device’s storage, but the card is tied to that device rather than being freely transferable. Google’s statement that “You can’t install apps on the SD card” applies to its portable-storage mode, not to adoptable storage generally. See Google’s SD-card setup guidance and the Android Open Source Project overview of adoptable storage.

Back up the card before formatting or changing its mode

Formatting permanently deletes the card’s contents. Before setting up or changing a card’s storage mode, copy anything you want to keep to another location. Android Help explicitly advises backing up data before formatting. If you need files to remain portable between devices, choose portable storage where the tablet offers that choice; adoptable storage is for a card intended to stay with that device.

If the steps do not match your tablet

  • No SD card option or card not detected: Confirm the tablet model supports microSD and check its manufacturer instructions for supported cards and capacity.
  • No “Change” option for an app: The app cannot be moved through Samsung’s described settings path; do not treat this as a card-speed problem.
  • Different menus or labels: Menu names and screens vary by manufacturer, model, carrier, and software version. Follow the instructions for your exact tablet.
  • Considering a format prompt: Stop and back up the card first if it contains files you need; formatting erases them.
