Use Huawei Phone Clone as the starting point. Open it on the new Huawei, identify the old phone as a Huawei device, another Android phone, or an iPhone/iPad, pair the phones with the displayed QR code or manual connection, choose the categories shown, and start the transfer. The result depends on the source platform: Huawei-to-Huawei transfers the widest range, Android-to-Huawei transfers applications but not their associated app data, and iPhone-to-Huawei is limited mainly to contacts, calendar events, and camera photos and videos.
What Phone Clone does—and what it does not
Phone Clone is Huawei’s first-party migration utility for moving selected content directly from an old phone to a new Huawei phone or tablet. Huawei documents a direct wireless connection for the process; its Phone Clone page says the transfer does not require mobile data or a WLAN connection. Huawei also describes the connection as private and encrypted. Those are Huawei’s own product claims, not an independent security audit.

The app presents the categories available from your particular source phone. That distinction matters: an item appearing on the old phone does not guarantee that it can be cloned, and an installed application is not the same as its private database, downloaded files, account session, or cloud history. Treat the selection screen as the authoritative list for that transfer.
Start with the official procedure in Huawei’s Phone Clone instructions. Keep the old phone intact until you have checked the new one, because Huawei lists several exclusions and warns that some cloning operations can overwrite existing app or settings data.

Prepare both phones before you connect them
Charge, unlock, and make room
- Charge both phones and keep them close together for the entire migration. A transfer can take a long time when the selection includes videos or a large photo library.
- Check free storage on the Huawei before selecting a large batch. Deselect categories that you have already backed up or cannot fit.
- Keep the old phone unlocked and available. Do not factory-reset it, trade it in, or remove its authentication apps until the new phone has passed your checks.
Find Phone Clone on the Huawei
Look for Phone Clone in the app list. If it is not visible, open Settings > System & updates > Phone Clone. Choose This is the new device, then select the source type that matches the old phone: Huawei, Other Android, or iPhone/iPad. Menu labels can vary by EMUI, HarmonyOS, Magic UI, app version, and region.
Check compatibility and app availability
Huawei’s data reference lists supported Huawei phones and tablets running Android 7.0, EMUI 5.0, or Magic UI 4.0 and later, and iPhones running iOS 12 or later. These are the requirements quoted on that reference page, not a universal guarantee for every model or regional release. Huawei cautions that earlier versions can have compatibility problems. Confirm the exact model and current Phone Clone listing in the relevant app store or on Huawei’s device-transfer support page before you begin.
Plan for app-specific records
Write down anything that must not be lost: authenticator recovery codes, local notes, downloaded documents, game saves, and chat histories. An Android application may be copied while its associated data is not. For records that matter, find the application’s own export, backup, or migration command before starting Phone Clone.
Step-by-step: transfer with Phone Clone
- Start on the new Huawei. Open Phone Clone directly or use Settings > System & updates > Phone Clone. Select This is the new device and choose Huawei, Other Android, or iPhone/iPad.
- Prepare the old phone. Open Phone Clone if it is already installed. Otherwise, follow the installation prompt on the old phone and verify that the offered version supports that device. Select This is the old device.
- Pair the phones. The Huawei displays a QR code or another on-screen connection method. Scan the code with the old phone, or choose the manual connection option when that is what the prompt offers. Stay in the Phone Clone screens while pairing.
- Review the inventory. The old phone shows the categories and counts that it can send. Expand the list and inspect it rather than accepting a blanket selection. Remove anything that will exceed the Huawei’s free storage or that you have already secured elsewhere.
- Start the transfer. Tap the transfer command on the old phone and leave both devices available until Phone Clone reports completion. Avoid interrupting the connection or deleting anything from the old phone during this stage.
- Check the result before cleanup. On the Huawei, open Contacts, Gallery, Calendar, Files, Messages, and the applications you rely on most. Compare counts and recent items with the old phone. Then use each unsupported app’s own migration or sign-in process.
The exact wording and order can change with system software, but the new-device/old-device roles and the source-platform choice are the important decisions. Huawei’s complete sequence is documented at consumer.huawei.com/en/support/content/en-us15850037/.
What can move from each type of old phone?
Huawei’s category list differs substantially by source. Use the table to set expectations before selecting a transfer.

| Old device | Huawei-documented scope | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Huawei phone or tablet | Contacts, messages, call logs, calendar events, notes, images, audio, videos, documents, applications, and some app and system data. | The broadest listed scope, but it is version-dependent. Some categories and app data remain excluded, and cloning can overwrite existing data in certain apps or settings on the receiving device. |
| Other Android phone or tablet | Contacts, SMS/MMS, call logs, calendar events, images, audio, videos, documents, and applications. | Huawei specifically says associated app data is excluded. Application compatibility and availability can differ on the Huawei. |
| iPhone or iPad | Contacts, calendar events, and photos or videos taken with the preinstalled camera app. | Huawei says other apps and data cannot be cloned through this route. Use an app’s own export or migration feature for anything outside those categories. |
The category definitions and qualifications come from Huawei’s Phone Clone and Tablet Clone data reference. The list shown on your phones can be narrower because of operating-system versions, app versions, permissions, regional services, or the particular devices involved.
Apps are not the same as app data
When the source is another Android phone, Phone Clone can list applications while excluding the data those applications created. That can mean a newly installed app still needs its account sign-in, downloads, settings, offline files, or game progress restored separately. Huawei’s documentation also identifies some app data as unavailable even in broader Huawei-to-Huawei migrations.
Use the app’s own migration tool
Open the old app and look for a command labelled backup, export, transfer, or chat-history migration. Huawei gives WeChat as an example: in the app, use Me > Settings > General > Chat History Migration & Backup. The exact path can change with the app version or region, so follow the labels currently displayed by that app. Complete this step while the old phone still contains the original records.
Separate local files from online accounts
After cloning, open each critical app and confirm that its records are present. A service whose data is stored on its own servers may simply require a normal sign-in; a service that keeps records only on the old device needs its own export or backup. Do not assume that seeing the app icon proves that its private data or account state transferred.
Data Huawei says is excluded or limited

Some operations can also overwrite data already on the Huawei. The behavior depends on the system and app versions. Inspect the proposed selection and preserve an independent copy of anything irreplaceable before you start.

The documented Phone Clone workflow is a direct phone-to-phone wireless transfer. Huawei says it does not consume a mobile-data allowance and does not require the phones to be connected to WLAN. It also describes the connection as private and encrypted; that description should be understood as Huawei’s product statement rather than a third-party verification.
Huawei’s Phone Clone page advertises transfer speeds of up to 8 GB per minute. This is an “up to” vendor figure, with no publication year stated on the page and no independent benchmark established here. Actual time varies with the amount and type of data, the phones, wireless conditions, and the categories selected. Do not use that figure as a promise of a typical transfer rate.
What to do when Phone Clone does not cover an item
Huawei’s backup guidance lists Phone or Tablet Clone alongside Huawei Share, cloud backup, HiSuite, and external storage. These methods have different jobs; none should be treated as an automatic replacement for Phone Clone’s application and app-data handling.
Huawei Share
Use Huawei Share when you need to send selected files or nearby content between compatible devices. It is useful for individual photos, documents, or folders that were not included in the clone, but it does not turn an arbitrary folder into an installed application or recreate private application databases.

Cloud backup
A cloud backup can preserve supported contacts, photos, settings, or other account-backed categories for later restoration. Check exactly what the backup service includes and whether the old phone has finished uploading. Cloud-only media is one of the categories Phone Clone may not copy directly, so verify that the files are available in the new phone’s cloud account.
HiSuite
HiSuite can provide a computer-assisted backup or restore route for supported Huawei devices. Follow the instructions for the exact phone and HiSuite version; a computer backup is not evidence that every third-party app’s private data is restorable.
External storage
A memory card, USB storage device, or computer can hold exported photos, videos, and documents. Copying files this way does not automatically install apps or move their associated data. Treat it as a selected-file backup and verify the restored files manually.
Huawei’s list of backup approaches is available in its phone and tablet backup guidance. Choose the method according to the missing category instead of repeatedly cloning the entire phone.

Troubleshooting common transfer problems
Phone Clone is missing or will not install
Check the app list and Settings > System & updates > Phone Clone on the Huawei. On the old phone, follow the installation prompt and confirm that its operating-system version is supported. If the app is not offered for that model or region, use Huawei’s device-specific support information and move files or app records with the alternatives described above.

The phones will not pair
Return to the source-platform choice on the Huawei and make sure the old phone is using the matching old device role. Reopen Phone Clone on both phones, rescan the displayed QR code, or choose the manual connection method. Keep the devices close, unlocked, and in the transfer screens; do not switch to another network setup in the middle of pairing.
The transfer stops or the Huawei runs out of space
Check the free-storage amount before restarting and deselect large videos, duplicate media, or categories already backed up. Charge both phones, reopen the transfer, and run a smaller category set if necessary. Preserve the old phone until the smaller batches have been checked.
An app appears but its records are absent
This is expected for associated app data when the source is another Android phone, and it can also occur for unsupported categories in a Huawei-to-Huawei transfer. Use the app’s export or migration command on the old phone; for WeChat, Huawei’s example path is Me > Settings > General > Chat History Migration & Backup. Reinstalling or cloning the app again will not substitute for that app-level process.
Recommended Free Tools
Photos, contacts, or messages are incomplete
Check whether the missing items were cloud-only, SIM-only, protected verification messages, or stored in an incompatible app. Compare the source and destination category counts, then use cloud restoration, Huawei Share, HiSuite, external storage, or the original service’s export function for the specific gap. Do not erase the source until the replacement copy opens correctly.
The safest migration order
For most people, the least risky sequence is: make the new Huawei ready, run Phone Clone with a deliberately reviewed selection, migrate chats and other app-specific records from inside those apps, restore excluded files through the appropriate backup method, and verify critical data in real use. Only after that process is complete should the old phone be reset or surrendered.
