Microsoft generally limits transfers to once every 90 days, except when a hardware failure requires an earlier move. Uninstall Office from the old computer, then install it on the new one using the Microsoft account linked to the license. If activation does not complete, Microsoft may require telephone activation.
Check that your license can be transferred
Microsoft’s consumer transfer guidance covers Office 2024 one-time purchases, such as Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024, when the replacement computer belongs to you. The rule is generally no more than one transfer every 90 days; Microsoft allows an earlier transfer when the old computer has a hardware failure. See Microsoft’s Office license transfer guidance for the applicable terms.

This is not the same as moving a Microsoft 365 subscription, and the consumer guidance does not establish transfer rights for every preinstalled, employer-managed, or volume-license copy. If your Office came with a computer, was provided by work, or is managed by an organization, check the license terms or ask the administrator before proceeding.

Find the Microsoft account linked to the license
Use the account you used when redeeming the product key. Microsoft associates the redeemed key with that account, which you can use later to install Office; the key itself is not normally the route for reinstalling after redemption. Review Microsoft’s instructions for entering an Office product key if you need to confirm the redemption process.

Remove Office from the old computer
Uninstall Office from the computer you are replacing. Microsoft’s transfer terms require removing the software from the prior device and not keeping copies after the transfer.
-
Install Office on the replacement
On the new PC or Mac, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license and follow Microsoft’s Office installation flow. The account-based process is described in Microsoft’s download, installation, and reinstallation guide. Check that you install the edition you own: Office Home and Office Home & Business do not include identical app sets. Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac in its Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ.
-
Complete activation
Open an Office app and follow the sign-in or activation prompts. If online activation fails even though the move follows the transfer terms, use Microsoft’s guidance for activating Office after reinstalling or installing on a different device. Microsoft notes that telephone activation may be needed; its instructions also require uninstalling Office from the original computer.

If the product key or account is a problem
If you already redeemed the key, start with the Microsoft account linked to that redemption rather than trying to redeem the key again. If you cannot identify or access that account, use Microsoft account recovery or contact Microsoft Support with proof of purchase and the product details available to you. Do not assume that a key alone overrides the transfer limits or the terms attached to a preinstalled, work, or volume-license copy.
When you may need a separate license
If your existing license is not eligible to move, or you need Office on another computer at the same time, you may need a separate license. Microsoft describes Office Home 2024 as a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac; check the edition’s included apps and applicable terms before buying. Its Microsoft 365 plans and product comparison may help distinguish a separate one-time purchase from a subscription, but it does not change the transfer rights of the license you already own.
