Move a PHP site from Windows to Linux as a controlled rebuild and cutover, not as a file copy. Inventory the existing PHP and web-server stack, provision a matching Linux runtime, transfer code and uploads, restore the database, translate Windows-specific settings, test on a private hostname, and change DNS only after the Linux copy passes the same business-flow checks. Keep the Windows server ready for rollback until the new site has completed an agreed observation period.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The migration model that avoids most outages
PHP source files are usually portable, but the environment around them is not automatically portable. IIS or another Windows web-server configuration, FastCGI settings, PHP extensions, drive-letter paths, filename case, rewrite rules, permissions, scheduled tasks, mail settings, and database behavior all have to be rebuilt or verified on Linux. A successful migration therefore has five distinct phases: discover, rebuild, copy, validate, and cut over.

Recommended Free Tools
- Discover: document the exact versions, services, settings, paths, jobs, and integrations on Windows.
- Rebuild: install the required Linux distribution, PHP version, extensions, database components, web server, dependency tools, and TLS configuration.
- Copy: transfer application code, user uploads, and a restorable database export through authenticated channels.
- Validate: exercise representative pages and every critical transaction on a staging hostname or temporary address.
- Cut over: freeze writes briefly, apply the final data change, switch DNS or the load balancer, monitor closely, and preserve a documented rollback path.
This approach also gives you a clean answer to the common question, “Can I just upload the PHP files?” No. Files alone omit the database, uploads, runtime extensions, rewrite behavior, environment variables, scheduled work, and service permissions that the application needs.
Inventory the Windows site before provisioning Linux
Do the inventory while the Windows site is healthy. Record each item in a migration sheet with its current value, its Linux replacement, and an owner responsible for checking it. The PHP installation documentation describes several Windows installation modes, so identify the current mode rather than assuming that every Windows site uses the same SAPI.

| Area | Record on Windows | Why Linux needs an explicit decision |
|---|---|---|
| PHP runtime | PHP version, SAPI (IIS FastCGI, Apache module, CGI, or CLI), enabled extensions, and relevant php.ini values |
The Linux package and PHP-FPM pool must provide the same application requirements; a missing extension can turn a working page into a fatal error. |
| Web server | Server software, document root, virtual hosts, TLS settings, URL rewrites, redirects, and access restrictions | IIS configuration is not an Apache .htaccess file or an Nginx server block. Recreate behavior in the destination server’s syntax. |
| Application files | Code tree, dependency manifests, upload directories, cache and session directories, generated assets, and any files outside the document root | Uploads and generated data are separate from source code and need their own transfer and permissions plan. |
| Paths and naming | Every Windows drive-letter path, include path, autoloader path, temporary directory, and filename whose capitalization matters | Linux uses a different path syntax and normally treats upper- and lower-case filenames as different names. |
| Database | Engine and version, database and account names, connection settings, character set and collation, time zone, SQL mode, stored routines, scheduled events, and rows containing file paths | The dump must be restored into a compatible destination and then checked for behavioral differences. |
| Operations | Scheduled tasks, queue workers, service wrappers, maintenance scripts, log locations, and restart procedures | Windows Task Scheduler and services have to be recreated using Linux scheduling and service mechanisms. |
| External services | SMTP credentials, API endpoints and keys, DNS records, certificates, webhooks, and any firewall allow-list entries | Changing the server can change source IPs, hostnames, certificate paths, or environment variables. |
Capture the current PHP configuration rather than relying only on the application’s documentation. Compare the output of php -m on the destination with the extensions actually loaded on Windows, and use phpinfo() in a protected diagnostic context when you need to inspect web-SAPI values. Remove or restrict that diagnostic page after the comparison.
Freeze writes and create a rollback package
Before copying anything, put the Windows site into maintenance or read-only mode if the application permits it. A read-only window prevents orders, registrations, uploads, and edits from changing while you make the first copy. If a full freeze is impossible, record which data can change and plan a final delta export immediately before DNS changes.
- Take a restorable database dump with the source engine’s native tool. Verify that the export completed successfully and that it can be read or tested in an isolated environment.
- Copy user uploads and other user-generated files separately from the application source. Include media, attachments, generated documents, and any files stored outside the document root.
- Save the current PHP configuration, web-server configuration, rewrite rules, certificate details, environment variables, and dependency manifests.
- Export scheduled tasks, queue definitions, worker commands, service settings, and restart instructions.
- Record DNS records and TTL values, TLS renewal details, SMTP and external API settings, and firewall rules.
- Keep the original Windows server powered and unchanged. Label the backup set with its creation time and document who can restore it.
The rollback package is more than a backup archive: it is a known-good copy of code, data, configuration, and operating instructions. Do not decommission the Windows host merely because the first Linux page loads.
Provision a Linux runtime that matches the application
Choose a supported Linux distribution and install the PHP version and extensions required by the inventory. Matching the application’s runtime is more important than choosing Linux for its label alone. Check the application’s dependency constraints and confirm that the selected PHP build supports every required extension before transferring production traffic.
Choose the web-server arrangement
Apache and Nginx can both serve PHP, but their configuration models differ. For modern Apache deployments, the PHP manual states: For all modern deployments, use PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager) with Apache httpd’s
PHP-FPM keeps PHP worker management separate from Apache, supports process isolation, can be restarted independently, and works with Apache event-based processing. If the application was coupled to IIS FastCGI settings, reproduce the required worker limits, timeouts, environment values, and request-size limits in the Linux PHP-FPM pool and web-server configuration rather than copying IIS settings verbatim.mod_proxy_fcgi module.
Install the surrounding services
Install the database server or client required by the design, Composer or the project’s other dependency tooling, and any queue or worker runtime. Configure a virtual host or Nginx server block with the intended document root. Add TLS, but initially bind the site to a staging hostname or temporary IP so that public traffic still reaches Windows during testing. Make the staging hostname resolve consistently for testers and automated checks without changing the production DNS record.

Compare the destination against the inventory
- The PHP major and minor version must satisfy the application’s constraints.
- Every extension used by the code must be installed and enabled in the web SAPI, not merely in the command-line SAPI.
- The document root must point to the intended public directory, especially for frameworks that keep configuration and vendor files above the web root.
- PHP limits such as upload size, post size, memory limit, execution time, and time zone must be checked against the Windows values.
- Logging must be enabled before testing so that a failed request leaves an actionable error rather than a blank page.
Transfer code and user-generated files safely
Use authenticated SFTP or an equivalent secure transfer method to copy the application tree and uploads. Transfer code and user-generated data as separate jobs so that you can repeat one without overwriting the other. Preserve directory structure, ownership information where practical, and file names exactly; do not copy Windows service binaries, IIS-only configuration files, or other operating-system artifacts as though they were portable application files.
- Create the destination directories and an account intended for deployment, not a root-only workflow.
- Upload the source tree and the upload archive over SFTP. Keep the original archive until checks are complete.
- Compare file counts and, where practical, checksums between source and destination. Investigate missing files, unexpected extra files, and changed capitalization.
- Exclude secrets from a public document root. Place environment files and private keys where the PHP service can read them but the web server cannot serve them as downloads.
- Repeat the comparison after extracting archives, because an archive can preserve a directory but still unpack with incorrect ownership or permissions.
Do not assume that a successful SFTP transfer proves the site is complete. Database rows can refer to upload paths, and generated files may be recreated only after a worker or scheduled job runs.
Migrate the database as a separate, restorable operation
A database-backed PHP site needs a data migration in addition to the file transfer. Export the source database with its native dump utility, move the dump securely, create the destination database and a least-privilege application account, then import the dump. Keep administrative credentials separate from the account used by PHP.
Prepare and restore the export
- Stop or quiesce writes before the initial export, and record the export timestamp.
- Include the schema, data, indexes, views, stored routines, and scheduled events that the application uses.
- Create the destination database with an intentional character set, collation, and time zone. Do not accept a distribution default without comparing it with the source.
- Import into a temporary or staging database first. Check row counts for major tables and inspect representative records, including non-ASCII text, timestamps, serialized values, and references to uploaded files.
- Grant the application account only the permissions it needs. Use a separate administrative account for imports, schema changes, and recovery.
Check behavior that a row count cannot reveal
Compare SQL mode and time-zone behavior, because date calculations and strictness can change results even when every row was copied. Verify stored routines and scheduled events explicitly. Search for Windows drive letters or backslashes stored in database columns; those values may need a data transformation or an application-level path conversion. Confirm that foreign-key relationships, unique constraints, and indexes were restored, and test writes rather than checking reads alone.
Plan the final data sync
The first import is not the cutover import if the Windows site continues accepting writes. During the final maintenance window, take a last dump, apply the final delta to Linux, and verify that the destination reflects the last successful Windows transaction before changing DNS. Record the exact point at which Windows writes were disabled. If the final import fails, keep users on Windows while you repair the Linux copy instead of splitting writes between both servers.
Translate Windows-specific configuration and code assumptions
Most migration defects appear at the boundary between portable PHP code and platform-specific assumptions. Search both source code and configuration files before staging the site.

Convert paths and file names
Replace drive-letter paths such as Windows absolute locations with Linux paths rooted in the new deployment. Review include paths, autoload configuration, temporary directories, upload destinations, image and PDF output directories, and any path assembled from an environment variable. Linux normally distinguishes Photo.jpg from photo.jpg; a case mismatch can therefore turn a link or include that worked on Windows into a 404 or missing-file error.
Rebuild rewrite and redirect rules
Translate IIS web.config rewrite rules into Apache .htaccess directives or Nginx server-block directives. Recreate front-controller routing, HTTPS redirects, canonical-host redirects, static-file exceptions, and protection for private directories. Test both a clean URL and a request containing a query string. A page that works when its PHP file is requested directly may still fail when the application relies on a rewrite rule.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Normalize line endings and executable scripts
Windows and Linux use different text-file line endings. Normalize shell scripts, configuration files, and migration scripts when a parser or shell reports unexpected characters. Check executable bits on worker and maintenance scripts; a file can be present and readable yet fail when the scheduler tries to run it.
Recreate the runtime environment
Define environment variables for database access, application mode, mail, queues, API credentials, and any feature flags. Recreate PHP-FPM pool variables and web-server headers deliberately instead of copying a Windows service environment. Confirm that the application’s timezone, locale, temporary directory, and session storage point to Linux locations. Rotate credentials if they were exposed during the transfer or embedded in old configuration files.
Recreate jobs, workers, and integrations
Convert Windows scheduled tasks into Linux scheduler entries or service-managed workers, preserving frequency, working directory, user identity, output logging, and failure notifications. Start queue workers under a dedicated service account and define how they restart after a reboot. Test SMTP delivery, webhooks, external APIs, image or PDF generation, and callbacks from third parties; these often depend on hostname, source IP, certificate, or environment changes rather than PHP source code.
Set ownership and permissions deliberately
Assign the document root to a non-root deployment owner and the web or PHP service account. Grant write access only to directories that genuinely need it, such as uploads, caches, sessions, and temporary output. Keep application code and configuration read-only to the running service wherever possible.

The practical test is performed as the account that actually runs PHP or a worker: create and remove a harmless file in each required writable directory, read the required configuration and certificate files, and confirm that a public request cannot download private configuration. The PHP FAQ illustrates the same principle on Windows by requiring the IIS service identity to have MODIFY permission on the temporary directory; Linux requires the equivalent service-account check, expressed through ownership, groups, and mode or access-control settings. Inspect application and PHP-FPM logs for permission errors instead of broadening permissions blindly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the Linux copy privately
Use the staging hostname or temporary IP while production DNS still points to Windows. Test from more than one client when possible, because cookies, DNS caching, and HTTPS behavior can differ between a local browser and an external monitor. Compare the Linux site with the known-good Windows site by function, not only by whether the home page renders.
Request and routing checks
- Open the home page, representative content pages, authenticated pages, and deliberately invalid URLs.
- Test clean URLs, query strings, trailing-slash behavior, canonical redirects, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, and direct requests for static assets.
- Check response codes and server logs for every failed request. A 404 generally points to document-root or rewrite translation; a 500 requires the PHP error log and extension list.
Account, session, and form checks
- Log in, log out, reset a password, and let a session expire.
- Submit forms that create, edit, and delete records. Confirm validation messages, CSRF protections, cookies, and redirects.
- Test multiple concurrent accounts if the application has role-specific behavior.
Files and generated content
- Upload files at the smallest and largest supported sizes, including names with spaces and non-ASCII characters.
- Download private and public files and confirm that access checks still apply.
- Generate images, PDFs, exports, thumbnails, and other derived files. Verify that the required PHP extensions and OS-level tools are installed.
Data and integrations
- Read and write representative database records, including dates, currency values, long text, and non-ASCII characters.
- Send test email through the production-equivalent SMTP path and confirm delivery, sender identity, and error logging.
- Run queue workers and scheduled jobs manually in a safe mode, then verify their logs and resulting database or file changes.
- Exercise payment, analytics, webhook, API, and other integrations with their documented test mechanisms. Confirm that callback URLs resolve to the intended host.
Operational checks
- Run
php -mand compare loaded extensions with the inventory. Use a protectedphpinfo()page only for temporary diagnostics. - Confirm log rotation, disk-space alerts, backup jobs, process restarts, and TLS certificate monitoring.
- Measure representative response times and watch PHP-FPM, web-server, database, and application logs while tests run.
- Run the application’s own test suite or health-check command if it provides one.
Do not approve staging because one tester saw the home page. Approval should identify which critical flows were tested, by whom, with which data, and what result was expected. Any difference in rendered output, permissions, dates, encoding, or business calculations needs an owner and a decision before cutover.
Cut over with a final sync and a defined rollback
Lower the production DNS TTL ahead of the planned change where practical, while remembering that resolvers can still cache records for longer. Schedule a short maintenance window and publish the expected user impact.
- Announce the freeze and put Windows into maintenance or read-only mode.
- Take the final database dump and apply the delta to Linux. Copy any files created since the initial transfer.
- Run a focused smoke test on Linux: home page, login, one representative write, one upload or download, database connectivity, email or queue health, and HTTPS redirects.
- Switch DNS or the load balancer to the Linux address. Do not shut down Windows yet.
- Monitor web and PHP-FPM logs, database errors, latency, resource use, failed jobs, and user reports continuously during the observation period.
- If a critical defect appears, stop writes on Linux, return DNS or the load balancer to Windows, and reconcile any permitted changes according to the rollback plan. Document the decision and the data point at which rollback occurred.
Keep the Windows server intact and clearly documented until the Linux site has passed the agreed observation period and backups have been proven. Only then should you retire old services or remove the rollback copy.
Choose the destination by capability, not by operating-system label
Whether the destination is self-managed hosting, a managed Linux virtual server, or another provider, compare the capabilities that affect this application. Linux branding alone does not guarantee a compatible PHP runtime or an easy recovery.

| Decision area | Questions to answer before purchase or provisioning |
|---|---|
| PHP compatibility | Can the host run the required PHP version and every required extension, with PHP-FPM available for the chosen web server? |
| Web server | Will you use Apache or Nginx, and can you configure virtual hosts, rewrites, headers, request limits, and TLS? |
| Database | Is the required engine and compatible version available, and can you set character set, collation, time zone, SQL mode, routines, and scheduled events? |
| Access and transfer | Do you have authenticated SFTP or SSH access, a deployment account, and a way to compare transferred files? |
| Backups | Can you create, download, restore, and test database and file backups independently of the live server? |
| Operations | Are scheduled jobs, long-running workers, log access, process restarts, disk monitoring, and TLS renewal supported? |
| Network control | Can you manage DNS or a load balancer, set firewall rules, and allow callbacks from external services? |
| Recovery | Can you keep the Windows origin available, redirect traffic quickly, and preserve data consistency during rollback? |
Common failures and the fastest diagnostic path
Every clean URL returns 404
Check the document root first, then the translated rewrite rules and whether Apache allows the required directory overrides. For Nginx, inspect the server block’s location and front-controller handling. A direct PHP-file request succeeding does not prove that the route translation is correct.
The page shows a 500 error or a blank response
Read the PHP-FPM and application logs, then compare php -m with the Windows extension inventory. Missing extensions, incompatible PHP versions, invalid configuration syntax, and Linux path case mismatches are more useful leads than repeatedly changing permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUploads fail while ordinary pages work
Confirm that the PHP service account can write to the upload and temporary directories, that request and upload limits match the old site, and that the destination has sufficient disk space. Test a small file first, then the largest supported file, and inspect the application log for the exact failing directory.
Users are logged out or sessions disappear
Verify session storage permissions and path, cookie domain and secure settings, HTTPS redirects, and whether requests are reaching more than one server with inconsistent session configuration. Check the application’s time zone and session lifetime values against Windows.
Database reads work but writes or dates are wrong
Confirm the application account’s write permissions, SQL mode, time zone, character set, collation, and restored indexes or constraints. Test a transaction that creates and then reads back a record containing non-ASCII text and a date boundary.
Scheduled work never runs
Run the job manually as its service account, using the same working directory and environment as the scheduler. Check executable permissions, line endings, absolute paths, PHP CLI version, output logs, and restart behavior. A successful web request does not prove that the CLI runtime has the same extensions or configuration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Email or webhooks fail only after DNS changes
Compare the Linux hostname, source IP, TLS certificate, firewall rules, SMTP credentials, callback URLs, and external allow-lists with the Windows values. Read delivery and application logs, then retest from the production hostname rather than only from the staging address.
Migration handoff record
Before declaring the move complete, retain one concise record containing the source and destination versions, PHP extensions, web-server configuration location, database export and restore dates, writable directories, scheduled jobs, DNS change time, monitoring contacts, and rollback instructions. This record turns the migration from a one-time stunt into an operable Linux service and gives the next administrator enough information to recover it without rediscovering the Windows environment.
