What mounting does in Garry’s Mod
Garry’s Mod can read assets that belong to other Source games. Mounting tells the server where those external game files live so that maps, materials, models, sounds and other base assets can be found when a map or addon references them. The mount is a file-system search-path configuration; it does not copy the content into every Garry’s Mod installation.

These entries must point to the games’ actual content directories. A random addon directory, a Steam library’s parent folder, or a workshop download cache is not a substitute for the game directory that contains the expected files and VPK archives.
The Garry’s Mod Wiki describes the effect this way: “Instructs Garry’s Mod to scan the specified folders, mount any sub-folders & VPK files.”

Plan the installation before editing configuration
Use a separate content location
Install or update Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 content with SteamCMD into a shared directory such as C:BaseContent, rather than into the directory that contains the running Garry’s Mod server. The official content guidance warns against pointing SteamCMD at the GMod server root: an update can overwrite files that the server needs and leave the installation unusable.
The external directory can be shared by more than one Garry’s Mod server on the same machine. Each server keeps its own mount.cfg, while all of them read the same installed game content. SteamCMD can then update that shared content incrementally instead of maintaining a separate copy for every server.

Confirm the host and account prerequisites
- You need filesystem access to the dedicated-server host and permission to create or edit files under the server’s
garrysmod/cfgdirectory. - The account running the server must be able to read every mounted directory and its files.
- Install both games’ dedicated-server content before testing the mount. A Steam client installation on another computer is not automatically visible to the server host.
- Record the full path to each game directory. On Linux, preserve capitalization exactly;
/srv/content/tfand/srv/content/TFare different paths. - Stop the server while changing the configuration. The new search paths are applied after a restart, not while an already-running process is using the old configuration.
Install Counter-Strike: Source and TF2 content with SteamCMD
Choose a stable external directory
Create a location dedicated to shared game content. On Windows, the example C:BaseContent is easy to identify and keeps the files separate from the server executable. On Linux, an equivalent location might be a directory under /srv or another volume reserved for server data. The exact directory name is your choice; the important properties are that it is outside the active GMod server root, persists across server updates, and is readable by the server process.
Install or update both depots
Use SteamCMD to install or update the Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 server content into the selected external location. Select the appropriate installation directory for each game, wait for SteamCMD to finish, and verify that the resulting folders are present before editing mount.cfg. If SteamCMD reports an update or validation error, fix that first; Garry’s Mod cannot mount files that were never downloaded or that the operating-system account cannot read.
For a multi-server host, point each server at this same content location. Updating the shared files once is generally simpler than updating duplicate copies, but schedule updates so that no running server is reading files while SteamCMD replaces them.

Identify the directories to mount
The path for Counter-Strike: Source must be the directory that contains its cstrike content. The Team Fortress 2 path must be the directory that contains its tf content. Do not stop one level too high or point at a folder that merely contains several game directories. Before proceeding, open each candidate path and confirm that the expected game files and VPK files are inside.
Create mount.cfg in the correct location
Navigate to the server configuration directory
On the dedicated-server host, open:
<server>/garrysmod/cfg/mount.cfg
<server> means the top-level directory of this particular Garry’s Mod server. The file belongs under that server’s garrysmod/cfg directory, not beside the server executable, not in the external content directory, and not inside an addon folder. If mount.cfg does not exist, create a plain-text file with that exact name. Make sure your editor has not silently added a second extension such as .txt.
Enter the mount keys and real paths
Use this configuration shape, replacing both example paths with the directories on your host:
"mountcfg"
{
"cstrike" "C:\steamcmd\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Source Dedicated Server\cstrike"
"tf" "C:/mytf2server/tf"
}
cstrike is the Counter-Strike: Source key and tf is the Team Fortress 2 key. Keep the quotation marks and braces. The Windows example demonstrates two valid path styles: backslashes must be escaped as pairs, while forward slashes can be written normally. If you use a Windows path with backslashes, write C:\BaseContent\cstrike in the configuration file, not a single unescaped backslash sequence.
On Linux, use the real absolute path and preserve case, for example:

"mountcfg"
{
"cstrike" "/srv/basecontent/cstrike"
"tf" "/srv/basecontent/tf"
}
Do not rename the keys to the folder names you happen to use. Garry’s Mod recognizes the cstrike and tf mount names for these games; the directory names can be elsewhere, but the keys must remain exact.
Check the file as text
- There is one opening and one closing brace.
- Each key and path is enclosed in quotation marks.
- The path points to the game’s content directory, not to a parent directory or addon collection.
- There are no smart quotes, copied formatting characters, or accidental extra extensions.
- Linux paths use the correct capitalization and the server account can traverse every parent directory.
Restart and verify the active search paths
Restart the dedicated server
Stop the Garry’s Mod server cleanly, save mount.cfg, and start the server again. The official content procedure expects the mounted files to become available after the server is rebooted. Editing the file while the process is running does not reliably apply the new paths to that process.
Run the path command
After the server finishes starting, open its server console and run:
path
The File Search Paths documentation says this command lists the active search paths, including the real filesystem path and its search-path designation. Check the output for entries corresponding to the Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 directories. The displayed path should match the directory you placed in mount.cfg, including capitalization on Linux.
If neither entry appears, the server did not accept the configuration or could not access the target directory. If an entry appears but points somewhere unexpected, correct the path and restart before testing a map or addon again.

Troubleshoot missing CSS textures and TF2 models
The server reports missing content immediately
- Open
<server>/garrysmod/cfg/mount.cfgand compare its structure with the example above. - Check each directory manually on the host. A typo, an omitted subdirectory, or a path that exists only on another machine prevents the mount.
- Confirm that the server process’s operating-system account can read the directories and files.
- Restart the server and run
pathagain. Do not rely on a previous console result from before the configuration change.
On Linux, inspect capitalization character by character. A path that looks identical in a file manager can fail when one directory uses uppercase letters and the configuration uses lowercase. Also check execute/traverse permission on parent directories, not only read permission on the final folder.
The path is present, but assets are still unavailable
Inspect <server>/garrysmod/cfg/mountdepots.txt. The mounting documentation describes this file as the declaration of which installed depots Garry’s Mod should attempt to mount. A missing or corrupt file can make otherwise installed content appear unavailable. Restore a valid copy for the server installation or repair the file according to the installation’s standard files, then restart and verify with path.
Next, confirm that you mounted the game content itself. Workshop downloads and third-party addon folders are not replacements for the Counter-Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2 depots. A map may still reference a model or material that is absent because the underlying game content was never installed, even though a similarly named addon exists.
Only one game’s content works
Check the two entries independently. The Counter-Strike: Source path must be attached to cstrike, and the Team Fortress 2 path must be attached to tf. A typo in one key does not get corrected by a valid entry for the other game. Run path and verify that both search paths are listed.
The mount worked until an update
Review the SteamCMD destination. If SteamCMD was pointed at the GMod server root, an update may have overwritten or rearranged server files. Move future installations and updates to the separate shared content directory, repair the affected server files, and recreate the mount using the external game paths. Keeping the content outside the server root prevents this class of overwrite from recurring.

Players see errors but the server looks correct
The server-side mount makes the assets available to the server process, but players may still need the corresponding game content in their own installations for client-side rendering. First ensure the server’s path output and file permissions are correct; then distinguish a server mount problem from a client that does not have the referenced game assets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMounting base-game content versus delivering addons
mount.cfg is for installed game content. It is not the mechanism for distributing a Workshop collection. Dedicated-server Workshop documentation describes a separate flow in which the server downloads the collection at startup and mounts the downloaded addons.
| Need | Correct mechanism | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Counter-Strike: Source textures, models or sounds | mount.cfg entry using cstrike |
The external Counter-Strike: Source directory appears in path. |
| Team Fortress 2 textures, models or sounds | mount.cfg entry using tf |
The external Team Fortress 2 directory appears in path. |
| Maps or addons distributed through a Workshop collection | Dedicated-server Workshop collection configuration | The server downloads and mounts the collection during startup. |
Do not place a Workshop collection path in the cstrike or tf lines. Conversely, downloading an addon collection will not install missing base-game depots.
Deployment choices and their trade-offs
| Approach | Advantages | Risks or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Separate shared content directory | Protects the GMod server root, allows several servers to reuse one installation, and lets SteamCMD update content in one place. | Every server must reference the correct absolute paths, and updates should be coordinated with running processes. |
| Installing content inside the server root | The files may appear convenient to locate initially. | SteamCMD updates can overwrite server files and break the installation; this is specifically discouraged for the mounting workflow. |
| Windows host | Both escaped backslashes and forward slashes can express the paths. | Backslashes require escaping in the configuration, and the directory must still be the real game content path. |
| Linux host | Absolute paths map cleanly to a shared server-data directory. | Capitalization and filesystem permissions are significant; a visually similar path can still be invalid. |
Direct mount.cfg configuration |
Appropriate for base Counter-Strike: Source and TF2 depots and easy to verify with path. |
It does not download or manage Workshop addons. |
| Workshop delivery | Designed for server-downloaded addon collections at startup. | It is a separate system and cannot replace installed base-game content required by a map. |
| Self-managed server | Full control over SteamCMD locations, permissions, restarts and shared storage. | You must maintain paths, updates and file access yourself. |
| Managed Source server | A host may handle process management and updates. | Confirm before purchasing that it permits custom mount.cfg paths, SteamCMD updates and external content directories. |
Operating several Garry’s Mod servers from one content installation
- Install or update the Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 content once in the external shared directory.
- Give each Garry’s Mod server its own
garrysmod/cfg/mount.cfg. - Use the same correct
cstrikeandtftargets in each file, or use equivalent absolute paths if the servers run under different directory layouts. - Restart each server after changing its configuration.
- Run
pathseparately on every server and confirm that it resolves to the intended shared directories.
Sharing reduces duplicate storage and makes incremental SteamCMD updates easier, but it also creates a common dependency: an incomplete or inaccessible shared directory affects every server that mounts it. Keep backups of each server’s configuration and avoid updating the shared files while active processes are loading maps or assets.
Final verification checklist
- Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 content were installed or updated with SteamCMD outside the GMod server root.
<server>/garrysmod/cfg/mount.cfgexists as a plain-text configuration file.- The exact keys are
cstrikeandtf. - Each key points to the game’s content directory, not a parent folder, addon directory or Workshop cache.
- Windows backslashes are escaped, or forward slashes are used consistently.
- Linux path capitalization and server-account permissions are correct.
<server>/garrysmod/cfg/mountdepots.txtexists and is not corrupt.- The server was restarted after the file was saved.
- The console command
pathlists both external search paths with the expected filesystem locations. - Workshop configuration is handled separately when the missing files belong to an addon collection rather than a base game.
Once these checks pass, Garry’s Mod has the information it needs to scan the specified folders and mount their subfolders and VPK files. The key distinction is simple: install the game content safely outside the server root, map it with the two exact mount keys, restart, and verify the paths the process is actually using.
