No single check can answer every availability question. A server may accept connections while PHP is exhausted, a page may return HTTP 200 while displaying an outage template, and the home page may work while WP-Cron jobs silently stop. Use each monitoring layer for the failure it can actually detect.
| Layer | What it observes | Incidents it can reveal |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress Site Health | Internal tests, configuration and scheduled checks | Failed loopback requests, late cron, obsolete database or PHP requirements, missing extensions, SSL/TLS and filesystem problems |
| External HTTP(S) or keyword check | A request made from outside the hosting account | Host-wide outages, DNS or TLS failures, web-server errors, and pages that are technically up but show an error message |
| Ping or port check | Network reachability or a listening service | Basic host, firewall, DNS, SMTP or other endpoint failures; it does not prove WordPress rendered correctly |
| Heartbeat check | A scheduled signal from a job or private system | WP-Cron, backups, imports, queues and other tasks that must run even when no visitor notices immediately |
| Application and infrastructure telemetry | Transactions, PHP, database, CPU, memory and error behavior | Slow plugins, expensive queries, saturated workers, memory exhaustion and rising application failures |
WordPress Developer Resources describes a combination of internal and external uptime monitoring as ideal. It also recommends regularly tracking page-load time, slowest average transactions and slow logs. Treat those as separate signals: availability tells you whether a request completed, while load data explains whether it completed quickly enough to be useful.

Start with WordPress Site Health
Open the Status and Info tabs
In the WordPress dashboard, go to Tools > Site Health. The Status tab groups findings into critical issues, recommended improvements and passed tests. Resolve critical findings first, then use the recommendations as maintenance work rather than ignoring them because the front page still loads.
The Info tab is a configuration record you can copy into an incident log. It exposes WordPress, server, database, constants and filesystem details, including server architecture, web server, PHP variables, cURL support, upload limits, database information and permissions. Record this information before changing versions or plugins so that a later failure has a known baseline.

Site Health includes checks for SQL-server currency, SSL/TLS support, loopback requests, late or missed cron events, required PHP extensions and scheduled health checks. A loopback failure means WordPress cannot reliably call itself; that can break background publishing, REST-driven administration or scheduled work even if a visitor can open the home page. A late or missed cron result points to scheduling trouble, not necessarily a total outage.
Individual checks are also exposed through the WordPress Site Health REST API. The available tests include background updates, loopback requests, HTTPS status, communication with WordPress.org and authorization headers. This makes it possible to collect the same diagnostic signals on a schedule or include them in an operations dashboard, subject to the authentication and permissions required by your WordPress installation.

Use Site Health as evidence, not as your only alarm
Site Health is generated inside the application and may be unavailable during a PHP fatal error, a web-server outage or a host-wide network failure. It is therefore a baseline and troubleshooting record, not independent proof of uptime. Save the date and result of each check, along with the active PHP and database versions, normal response times and the host's usual CPU and memory behavior.
Add an external monitor that cannot be affected by the same host
Configure at least one monitor outside the WordPress server. An external service can continue checking when the host, control panel or WordPress dashboard is unavailable. Create the check against the public domain, not an internal hostname, and route alerts to a channel that someone actually watches.
Choose the check type for the failure you care about
| Check | How it works | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP(S) | Requests a URL and evaluates the HTTP result | You need to know whether a public page responds and whether its status is acceptable | A valid status alone does not prove that the page contains the right content |
| Keyword | Requests a page and looks for expected or forbidden text | An application can return HTTP 200 while displaying an outage, maintenance or database-error template | Text can change during a legitimate redesign; maintain the assertion deliberately |
| Ping | Checks whether the host responds to ICMP | You need basic network or machine reachability | Many networks block ICMP, and a successful ping does not mean the web server or PHP works |
| Port | Checks whether a particular service endpoint is reachable | You need to watch DNS, SMTP or another listening service in addition to HTTP | An open port does not prove that the application behind it is healthy |
| Heartbeat | Receives a periodic signal from a job or internal system | You need proof that a backup, import, queue worker or cron task actually ran | No signal may mean the job failed, the sender failed or the network blocked the signal; inspect the job log |
UptimeRobot documents all five monitor types and also provides SSL and domain-expiry monitoring through its API, plus integrations for consolidating alerts. Those checks cover certificate and registration failures that an ordinary page request may not identify until visitors see a browser warning.
Select meaningful URLs
Use the home page for a basic public-availability check, then add a representative endpoint that exercises the part of the site users depend on most. For an online store, that may be a product or checkout path; for a membership site, it may be a login or account endpoint. Do not monitor an authenticated URL with credentials unless the monitoring service can protect them and you have assessed the privacy and lockout implications. When a page has a cache layer, include one check that reaches the application path so that a cached 200 response cannot hide a PHP or database failure.

Make alerts actionable
Set a short confirmation or retry window to avoid paging on one transient packet loss, then alert when the failure persists. Include the monitor name, URL, status or keyword result, first-failure time and the last successful check. Send a recovery notification as well; without it, responders may keep investigating an incident that has already cleared.
Tell an outage from a slow WordPress site
Use a fixed sequence during an incident so that you do not jump straight to restarting services or disabling plugins.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm from outside. Check the external HTTP(S) result, response time and keyword assertion. If every check fails, investigate DNS, TLS, the web server, firewall and host status before opening WordPress troubleshooting screens.
- Check whether the failure is regional or universal. If your monitor offers multiple locations, compare them. A single-location failure can be a route or probe problem; failures from several independent locations are stronger evidence of a site incident.
- Inspect Site Health and loopback behavior. A failed loopback, HTTPS or cron test can explain broken administrative or background functions while public pages remain available.
- Compare response time with the baseline. A successful HTTP status with a large increase in time is a performance incident. Record when the increase began and whether it affects every URL or only one transaction.
- Correlate application and host data. Look for a slow PHP transaction, database-query latency, rising transaction errors, exhausted PHP workers, CPU saturation or memory pressure. The correlation identifies a likely cause; a single metric by itself rarely does.
- Test the user-visible path again. After a change, verify the external check, the affected transaction and any background job. A green server metric is not a recovery until the failing behavior is gone.
Monitor load and performance, not just reachability
Track the metrics WordPress recommends
Record page-load time, the slowest average transactions and slow logs on a regular schedule. Page-load time reflects the visitor experience. Slowest transactions identify a route, plugin or request class that deserves investigation. Slow logs provide the detailed evidence needed to find a call, query or external dependency that is consuming time.
Do not treat a CPU percentage as a universal failure threshold. Establish a normal range for this site and host, then alert on a sustained deviation that coincides with slower responses, queue growth or errors. The same percentage can mean very different things on a shared host, a small virtual machine or a multi-worker dedicated server.

Add application performance monitoring when the cause is unclear
WordPress guidance names New Relic, AppDynamics and Tideways as examples of profiling tools. New Relic's WordPress integration combines PHP, Apache and MySQL integrations and provides dashboards for transactions, visitors and call duration. Its WordPress monitoring materials describe uptime and Lighthouse metrics, response-time alerts, memory and CPU alerts, and transaction-error alerts.
Use this instrumentation to answer four progressively narrower questions:
- Is the host reachable and are requests completing?
- Which URL or transaction is slow?
- Is the delay in PHP execution, a plugin call, a database query or an external request?
- Are CPU, memory, workers or another infrastructure resource preventing recovery?
New Relic gives quickstart examples such as memory or CPU above 90 percent, an Apdex score below 0.5 for five minutes, and transaction failures above 10 percent for five minutes. These are product examples, not WordPress standards. Tune them against your baseline, traffic pattern and user-visible impact; no canonical source establishes a universal uptime, CPU, memory or response-time number for every WordPress site.
Use logs to validate a diagnosis
When telemetry identifies a slow transaction, correlate its timestamp with PHP, web-server and database logs. Check whether the same period contains a deployment, plugin update, traffic burst, failed external API call, lock wait or out-of-memory event. Preserve the original time range before rotating logs or restarting a service, because a restart can remove the evidence that distinguishes a capacity problem from a code regression.

Monitor WP-Cron and other background work
Why WP-Cron runs late
WP-Cron is request-triggered: WordPress checks for due events when it receives a request. On a low-traffic site, few requests may arrive, so scheduled events can run late even while every page appears healthy. A high-traffic site can have the opposite problem if requests repeatedly trigger expensive scheduled work.
WordPress.com Developer Resources describes WP-Cron as the scheduling system that runs these tasks by default and documents server-side cron as an alternative. A server-side scheduler can invoke the required WordPress command on a predictable schedule rather than waiting for a visitor.
Monitor both the schedule and the result
Use Site Health's late or missed cron result to detect a scheduling problem, then add a heartbeat for the outcome that matters. For example, a backup job can send a signal containing its completion time and status; an import can report the last processed item; and a queue worker can report its last successful run. A heartbeat proves execution, whereas a page request proves only that a web server answered.
If you cannot run a server-side scheduler, an external service such as Jetpack or UptimeRobot can periodically request the site to trigger scheduled work more consistently. Protect any trigger endpoint, make the job idempotent, and monitor failures so that a repeated request cannot duplicate orders, emails or imports.
Set up monitoring in a practical sequence
- Write down the baseline. Record the site URL, hosting environment, PHP and database versions, normal response times, and normal CPU and memory behavior. Capture the Site Health Status and Info results.
- Create an external HTTP(S) monitor. Check the home page from outside the host and verify both the expected status and a sensible response-time baseline.
- Add a representative application check. Monitor a public transaction or other path that exercises more than a cached landing page. Handle authentication securely if the path requires it.
- Add a keyword assertion where needed. Look for text that proves the page is usable, or reject a known outage phrase, when HTTP 200 could mask an error template.
- Add a heartbeat for critical jobs. Have backups, imports, queues or WP-Cron tasks send a completion signal, and alert when the signal is late or reports failure.
- Add application and infrastructure instrumentation. Collect transaction timing, PHP and database details, CPU, memory and errors when basic uptime checks cannot explain slowness.
- Configure routing and escalation. Send alerts to a monitored channel, define who acknowledges them, and set an escalation path for an unacknowledged host outage.
- Test the alerts deliberately. Trigger a harmless keyword failure, heartbeat miss or test endpoint and confirm that the notification, recovery message and timestamps are correct.
- Document first response. The runbook should say to confirm externally, inspect Site Health and host metrics, identify the slow transaction or failing dependency, apply the least risky fix, verify user-visible recovery and record the resolution.
Design a monitoring stack by capability
When comparing services or building a stack, score each option against the same axes rather than choosing by a dashboard screenshot.
| Decision axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Independence | Does the check run outside the WordPress host and from more than one network location? |
| Check types | Does it support HTTP(S), keyword, ping, port and heartbeat checks appropriate to your failure modes? |
| Application and infrastructure coverage | Can it show transactions, PHP and database timing, CPU, memory and errors, or will you need a separate APM and host monitor? |
| Alert routing and escalation | Can it notify the channel your team monitors, suppress duplicates, send recovery notices and escalate an unacknowledged incident? |
| Retention and reporting | How long are response times, failures, logs and uptime records retained, and can you export them for incident review? |
| Private and scheduled endpoints | Can it safely monitor authenticated or private services and receive heartbeats from cron jobs without exposing credentials? |
Troubleshoot common monitoring findings
The monitor reports down, but you can open the site
- Check whether the monitor is testing a different hostname, protocol or path than your browser.
- Compare DNS and TLS results and test from another network; a regional route or certificate problem may affect the probe but not your connection.
- Review keyword rules for text that was legitimately removed during a redesign.
- Confirm that a firewall or security plugin is not blocking the monitor's source addresses.
The site returns HTTP 200 but visitors see an outage
- Add a keyword check that requires normal page text or rejects the maintenance and error phrase.
- Check the origin response rather than relying only on a stale cache.
- Review PHP and database errors for the time of the false-green response.
Pages are slow while CPU is normal
- Inspect transaction traces, PHP slow logs and database-query timing; waiting on a lock or remote API does not always raise CPU.
- Compare the slowest transactions with the affected URL and deployment timeline.
- Check memory pressure, worker exhaustion and network latency, not just processor utilization.
WP-Cron is late but the home page is healthy
- Review Site Health's late or missed cron finding and list the due events.
- Check whether traffic is too low to trigger requests or whether loopback requests are failing.
- Move critical schedules to server-side cron or use a protected external trigger, then verify completion with a heartbeat.
Alerts arrive constantly without a clear incident
- Replace single-sample CPU rules with sustained conditions tied to response time, errors or queue growth.
- Increase the confirmation window for transient network failures and group duplicate notifications.
- Separate warning thresholds from paging thresholds and review the baseline after traffic or hosting changes.
Keep the monitoring useful over time
Review the checks after every major plugin, theme, PHP, database or hosting change. Remove endpoints that no longer represent a real user journey, update keyword assertions after intentional copy changes, rotate credentials used by private checks, and verify that heartbeat jobs still send their signal after scheduler changes. During an incident, preserve the monitor timeline and relevant logs; afterward, adjust the check or runbook so the same failure is detected earlier and diagnosed with less guesswork.
