Claude Code and Codex can help you build website-change checks, but the products do not offer one interchangeable, universal monitor. Claude Code documents session-based recurring work with /loop and cloud automation options; OpenAI documents website-monitoring notifications in ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks, while Codex automations are separate. Choose based on where the check runs, whether the page needs a browser, and how you want to hear about a change.
Choose the right kind of check
Before setting up an agent, define four things: the exact URL, the specific change that matters, how often to check, and where a useful alert or report should go. A raw page diff can be noisy: timestamps, rotating recommendations, and other routine edits may change even when the information you care about has not.

- Execution: Does the check need to run only while your current session or computer is available, or should it continue in the cloud?
- Trigger: Is a recurring schedule enough, or should a supported event start the job?
- Page access: Is the relevant content available from a normal page fetch, or does it require rendering, navigation, or interaction?
- Change and notification: What qualifies as meaningful, how should repeat alerts be handled, and should the result be sent to a notification channel or saved as a report?
These are implementation choices, not a proven accuracy ranking. The documented options do not establish which agent detects changes most reliably across arbitrary websites.
What Claude Code and Codex document
| Option | Documented behavior | Best fit and caveat |
|---|---|---|
Claude Code /loop |
Schedules recurring work locally in the current session; Anthropic says a loop can run for up to three days at a time. Anthropic documentation | Useful for a temporary, session-bound check. It is not a durable cloud monitor independent of your session. |
Claude Code /schedule and Routines |
Claude Code help describes cloud jobs that continue when the laptop is closed. Anthropic’s April 14, 2026 announcement described Routines as a research preview configurable to run on a schedule, by API call, or in response to GitHub events. Claude Code help; Routines announcement | Consider when a workflow should run independently of an open laptop. Access and availability depend on the current product configuration; the announcement identified Routines as a research preview at that time. |
| Claude in Chrome | Anthropic’s help material describes website navigation and reading, launching it through Claude Code in documented contexts, and scheduled browser tasks. Anthropic help | Relevant when visible, rendered content or browser actions matter. Browser access and account availability do not guarantee compatibility with every site. |
| ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks | OpenAI says monitoring tasks check for changes and notify when a relevant update occurs. OpenAI help | A documented monitoring option in ChatGPT. Do not assume it is a Codex feature. |
| Codex automations | OpenAI documentation identifies Codex automations separately from ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks and documents browser-related features. OpenAI help; Codex | Use the Codex product surface and documentation for the workflow you intend to build. The cited material does not establish a universal recipe for monitoring arbitrary third-party websites from Codex. |
In short: use Claude Code /loop for a recurring check tied to a current session; investigate Claude’s cloud options when the job must continue without your laptop; consider Claude in Chrome where browser interaction is required. ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks are the specifically documented OpenAI option for monitoring changes and notifications. Codex automations are distinct, so verify the exact Codex workflow rather than transferring ChatGPT instructions to it.

Build a simple scheduled check
For a page whose relevant text is available without browser interaction, ask Claude Code or Codex to help create a small job that fetches the page, extracts the part you care about, compares it with the last saved version, and reports only a meaningful difference. This is a custom workflow, not a claim that either product automatically monitors any URL.
Give the agent an actionable specification
Use a prompt that makes the scope and failure handling explicit. For example:
Build a recurring check for
https://example.com/announcements. Watch only the announcement titles and publication dates in the main content area; ignore navigation, ads, and timestamps that change on every visit. Check once each weekday at 09:00 in my chosen timezone. Save the last successful result, compare it with the new result, and alert me only when a new announcement appears. Include the checked URL, time, changed text, and a link in the report. If the fetch fails or the page structure changes, report that as a check error and do not treat it as a content change. Tell me what permissions, runtime, schedule, and notification destination the implementation requires.Recommended: Crashes or Glitches? Replace the example URL, content selector or extraction rule, schedule, and destination with your own. Review the generated implementation before relying on it: confirm where state is stored, how credentials are handled, and whether the proposed runtime actually runs at the intended times.
Keep comparison noise under control
- Compare the smallest meaningful region, not the whole HTML document.
- Normalize harmless variations such as whitespace or changing display timestamps where appropriate.
- Keep the prior successful result. A failed request should not overwrite the baseline or generate a false “page changed” alert.
- Include a short excerpt or a focused diff so an alert explains what changed.
- Decide whether repeated notifications should be suppressed until the page changes again.
Use a browser check when the page needs rendering
Some sites reveal the information you care about only after JavaScript runs, navigation, or an interaction. A plain fetch-and-compare workflow may miss that content. Claude in Chrome is the documented browser-oriented route among the options above, with scheduled browser tasks described in Anthropic’s help material. Browser access remains site- and account-dependent.
Ask the agent to state the exact browser actions, target text, schedule, and alert destination before enabling the check. For example, specify which page to open, which tab or control to use, which visible heading or value to watch, and how to distinguish a login page or consent screen from a real result. Do not assume a check can pass authentication or anti-automation controls: credentials, site restrictions, dynamic content, and account eligibility can all affect whether it works.

For Codex, treat a browser-driven monitor as a custom workflow only after confirming that the relevant Codex feature and permissions are available in your environment. OpenAI’s cited material distinguishes Codex automations from ChatGPT monitoring tasks; it does not provide a universal Codex setup for arbitrary third-party pages.

If the goal is to capture what a page looks like at a check time, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its cleanup options accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. It is a capture service, not by itself a recurring change-detection or notification workflow: schedule calls and compare results in the automation you choose.
See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation. Example call (replace the URL and API key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common problems and fixes
- The check reports a change every time: Narrow the watched region and normalize routine variations such as timestamps or whitespace. Alert on the specific content change, not on every difference in page source.
- The result is blank or incomplete: The content may require JavaScript, a browser action, or more time to load. Try a browser-driven workflow where supported, and make the job report an incomplete check rather than interpreting missing content as deletion.
- The job stops when you close the laptop: A local, session-bound
/loopis not equivalent to independent cloud execution. Use an available cloud automation option if the workflow must continue while the computer is off. - The site returns a login, consent page, or block: The monitor may not have the required access, or the site may restrict automation. Confirm authorized access and the site’s rules; do not treat an access page as the monitored content.
- No alert arrives: Verify the schedule or trigger, the configured notification destination, and whether the run completed successfully. Have the job report execution errors separately from “no change.”
- Codex instructions do not match ChatGPT: Check that you are configuring Codex automations, not ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks. OpenAI documents them as separate product surfaces.
Reliability and cost considerations
A monitor is only useful if its schedule, access, comparison rule, and reporting path all work together. Start with a low-risk test and inspect several successful runs, a no-change run, and a simulated fetch or parsing failure before treating alerts as dependable. The official material cited here does not provide a comparative accuracy or reliability ranking for Claude Code, Claude in Chrome, ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks, or Codex automations.
Check the current official product documentation for availability and limits before depending on a specific schedule or preview feature; interfaces and eligibility can change. The cited documentation does not establish a workflow-specific price comparison, so confirm any applicable account or plan terms in the product you choose.
