The important first step is choosing the right signal: rendered appearance, visible text, a specific value, uptime, or another data source.
Choose what you want to detect
Hexowatch describes 13 monitoring types on its homepage; that is the vendor’s feature count, not an independent assessment. Pick a monitor based on the event you need to notice, rather than treating every page edit as equally important. See Hexowatch and its monitor descriptions for current availability.

| Monitor type | What it watches | Useful when you want to detect |
|---|---|---|
| Visual | The rendered appearance of a page | Layout, image, or other visible design changes |
| Content | Visible page text | Copy changes while disregarding purely visual changes |
| Keyword | Whether a selected word or phrase is present or absent | A brand mention, offer, or term appearing or disappearing |
| HTML element | A selected page field or element | A price, availability value, or other specific data point changing |
| Availability | Whether a URL is down or back | Learning that a monitored page becomes unavailable or returns |
| Source code or technology | Source-code changes or technology-stack components | Changes to HTML, third-party scripts, or detected technologies |
| Sitemap | Pages listed in a sitemap | New or updated pages appearing in a site inventory |
| RSS, API, or backlink | An RSS feed, API response, or link on another page | Changes to a feed, endpoint, or a link pointing to your site |
For example, use a visual monitor to watch a competitor’s landing-page design, a content monitor to follow changes to terms, and an HTML element monitor to focus on a displayed price. If the important event is whether a URL responds at all, choose availability instead.
Set up a Hexowatch monitor
- Define the event. Decide what change should trigger attention: a redesign, changed wording, a price shift, a missing keyword, a technology change, an outage, or a newly listed sitemap page.
- Select the matching monitor type. Choose visual, content, keyword, HTML element, source code or technology, availability, sitemap, RSS, API, or backlink monitoring according to the signal you want to track.
- Enter the target URL or source. Add the page or data source. The availability walkthrough describes previewing the URL before configuring the monitor.
- Configure the monitor. For availability, set a check frequency and notification channels; the walkthrough also describes optional start and end dates. Available settings depend on monitor type and plan. Check Hexowatch’s live plan details for current quotas and maximum frequency rather than assuming a particular interval.
- Start monitoring. Review the resulting notifications and archived snapshots to understand what changed. Hexowatch describes snapshots as a way to compare changes.
The older official visual-monitor tutorial provides a visual-monitor walkthrough, but interface labels may have changed since it was published. Use the current in-product prompts if the labels differ. Hexowatch’s visual-monitor tutorial is dated January 24, 2022 and was updated August 19, 2022.

Choose check frequency and alert destination carefully
Check frequency is a plan-dependent setting, not a universal promise about how quickly an event will be detected. Hexowatch’s official pricing page has displayed different monthly check quotas and maximum frequencies by plan; these details can change. Verify the current terms on the Hexowatch pricing page before selecting a plan or relying on a particular cadence.
A 2024 Hexowatch playbook names email, Zapier, Google Sheets, Pabbly Connect, Slack, Telegram, and webhooks as integration or alert options. The material does not establish current plan eligibility or setup instructions for each connector, so confirm availability in the current product before building a workflow.

Review alerts and troubleshoot missed or noisy changes
Treat an alert as a reason to inspect the recorded snapshot, not as proof that a change is important. Compare the archived view with the current page and decide whether the change matches the event you wanted to monitor.
- Too many alerts: The selected signal may be broader than your goal. If visual changes are noisy but you only care about a price, try monitoring the relevant HTML element instead.
- An expected change was not reported: Check that the target URL and monitor type match the page and event. Confirm the monitor is active and review its configured frequency and alert destination.
- The page is dynamic, gated, or bot-protected: The available sources do not establish reliable capture for every such page. Verify behavior on the specific URL rather than assuming all pages can be monitored consistently.
- Plan limits or cadence are unclear: Check the current pricing page and account settings. Do not rely on old figures or an interval described for a different plan.
Hexowatch’s official documentation describes monitor categories and configurable frequency, but does not establish a universal polling algorithm, guaranteed detection latency, accuracy rate, or guaranteed handling of every protected or dynamic page.

Or skip the browser setup
Hexowatch is for ongoing change monitoring; if your immediate need is simply to capture a website as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a WebP screenshot of stripe.com:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which page verdict and billing status applied. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
