Run a browser capture on a Raspberry Pi at a regular interval, save each screenshot, and compare it with a reviewed baseline. The reliable part is keeping the capture environment and page state consistent; the scheduling and alert channel are choices you configure for your own setup. This guide uses Playwright for capture and a small Node.js script for image comparison.
How website visual monitoring works
A visual monitor is a loop with four parts: capture a page in a consistent state, retain the image, compare it with a baseline, and inspect or alert when the difference matters. Playwright’s visual comparison workflow creates a reference image on its first run and compares later runs against it. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

This detects rendered appearance changes, not every kind of website change. A visual comparison may miss changes outside the captured area or changes that do not alter pixels, and it may flag expected variation such as a clock, rotating banner, or personalized content.

Choose the page area and comparison approach
Choose a capture scope
Decide what you need to monitor before taking the baseline. A viewport screenshot is useful for the initial visible layout; a full-page capture includes content below the fold; an element screenshot narrows monitoring to a particular component. Playwright supports page, full-page, and element screenshots. See its screenshot documentation.
- Use a viewport capture when changes to the first screen are the concern.
- Use a full-page capture when changes lower on a page matter too.
- Use an element capture when unrelated page regions are noisy or irrelevant.
Pick a baseline and threshold deliberately
Keep a reviewed reference screenshot, then compare each capture with it. If you compare only with the immediately previous image, a series of small changes can become the new normal without a clear record of the original state. A baseline-based comparison makes drift easier to review; retaining timestamped captures gives you a history.

There is no universal pixel-difference threshold that identifies a meaningful change. Start with strict comparison for a static page, inspect the resulting diffs, then decide how much variation is acceptable for your page and capture conditions. Treat any threshold as a monitoring policy, not proof that a change is harmless.
Prepare the Raspberry Pi
A headless Raspberry Pi setup still needs boot media and power. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide describes microSD as a common boot medium and supports headless network setup: Raspberry Pi getting started. A Pi 5 is an option, not a demonstrated requirement for this workload; the product page lists multiple memory capacities and a microSD slot: Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.

Choose a supply for the exact board. Raspberry Pi recommends its 27W USB-C supply for Pi 5; do not assume that recommendation applies to other models: 27W USB-C power supply. Raspberry Pi lists official microSD card capacities of 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB, but does not prescribe a capacity for screenshot monitoring: Raspberry Pi SD cards.
Archive capacity depends on capture frequency, screenshot size, and retention duration. Estimate it from your own captures before choosing a card; no particular capacity is established for this workload.

Install Playwright and the comparison dependencies
The example below captures a fixed viewport, compares the resulting PNG to a baseline with pixelmatch, and writes a diff image plus a JSON result. It is a DIY starting point, not a tested Pi deployment. Use a stable OS, browser version, settings, power source, and headless configuration for baseline and later captures.
- Install Node.js on the Pi using the installation method appropriate to its OS and architecture.
- Create a project directory, initialize it, and install the packages:
mkdir pi-visual-monitor && cd pi-visual-monitor
npm init -y
npm install playwright pixelmatch pngjs
npx playwright install chromium - Save the following as
monitor.mjs. SetTARGET_URLto the page you own or are authorized to monitor.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import pixelmatch from 'pixelmatch';
import { PNG } from 'pngjs';
import { mkdir, readFile, writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
import path from 'node:path';
const url = process.env.TARGET_URL;
if (!url) throw new Error('Set TARGET_URL, for example https://example.com');
const outDir = process.env.OUT_DIR ?? './captures';
const baselinePath = path.join(outDir, 'baseline.png');
const currentPath = path.join(outDir, 'current.png');
const diffPath = path.join(outDir, 'diff.png');
const resultPath = path.join(outDir, 'result.json');
const maxDiffRatio = Number(process.env.MAX_DIFF_RATIO ?? '0.001');
await mkdir(outDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: currentPath, fullPage: true, animations: 'disabled' });
let baseline;
try {
baseline = PNG.sync.read(await readFile(baselinePath));
} catch {
await writeFile(baselinePath, await readFile(currentPath));
console.log(`Created baseline: ${baselinePath}. Review it before relying on alerts.`);
process.exitCode = 0;
}
if (baseline) {
const current = PNG.sync.read(await readFile(currentPath));
if (baseline.width !== current.width || baseline.height !== current.height) {
throw new Error(`Image dimensions changed: baseline ${baseline.width}x${baseline.height}, current ${current.width}x${current.height}`);
}
const diff = new PNG({ width: baseline.width, height: baseline.height });
const changedPixels = pixelmatch(baseline.data, current.data, diff.data, baseline.width, baseline.height, { threshold: 0.1 });
const totalPixels = baseline.width * baseline.height;
const ratio = changedPixels / totalPixels;
await writeFile(diffPath, PNG.sync.write(diff));
const result = { url, capturedAt: new Date().toISOString(), changedPixels, totalPixels, diffRatio: ratio, maxDiffRatio, changed: ratio > maxDiffRatio, currentPath, diffPath };
await writeFile(resultPath, JSON.stringify(result, null, 2));
console.log(JSON.stringify(result, null, 2));
if (result.changed) process.exitCode = 2;
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The script’s first successful capture becomes the baseline. Review captures/baseline.png before treating later results as useful. On subsequent runs, it saves current.png, diff.png, and result.json. Exit status 2 means the configured ratio was exceeded; a scheduler can use that result to trigger a notification, but this script does not send one.

Make captures repeatable and reduce false alarms
Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, etc.” Its visual comparison guidance explains why captures should use the same environment. Changing the Pi, browser, viewport, device scale factor, or capture mode can create differences unrelated to a website update.
- Keep the same Pi, OS image, browser version, viewport, and device scale factor for baseline and monitoring runs where possible.
- Wait for the relevant content to load.
networkidlein the example may not suit pages with continuous network activity; choose an explicit selector or other page-state condition if needed. - Disable animations where possible and avoid capturing at inconsistent points in a rotating or updating page.
- Hide volatile regions or mask them if their variation is not what you want to monitor. Playwright screenshot controls include styles and masking; consult the screenshot options.
- Keep the baseline under deliberate control. If an expected redesign occurs, review it and replace the baseline intentionally rather than automatically accepting every difference.
Schedule captures, keep history, and alert
Run the script at an interval that matches how quickly you need to notice changes and how much storage you can retain. A scheduler such as cron or a systemd timer can start it periodically; choose one that fits your Pi setup. The code itself does not configure scheduling or a notification service.

For a useful history, save timestamped screenshots and diffs rather than overwriting only one current image. Define a retention period, and delete old artifacts according to it. Before enabling alerts, run several captures and review how the page’s ordinary changes affect the diff. Route a threshold breach to your preferred notification mechanism, or inspect the generated JSON and diff manually.
Common problems and fixes
- Chromium will not launch: confirm the browser installation completed and that the operating system and Node.js environment support the installed Playwright browser build. Re-run
npx playwright install chromium; if the issue persists, check Playwright’s platform-specific installation guidance. - Navigation times out: the page may be slow or keep network requests open. Increase the timeout if appropriate, or replace
networkidlewith a wait for the specific content you need to capture. - Every run reports a change: check whether the page has dynamic content, animations, ads, personalization, or timestamps. Stabilize the capture state, exclude irrelevant regions, and inspect
diff.pngbefore changing the threshold. - Image dimensions differ: full-page height may have changed, or the viewport/device scale factor may not match. Determine whether this is a real layout change; if it is expected, review and deliberately update the baseline.
- No alert arrives: the example only writes a result and sets an exit code. Configure the scheduler and notification delivery separately, and verify each part independently.
- Storage fills up: reduce retention, capture less often, or store only the artifacts needed for review. Required capacity depends on actual image sizes and retention, not just the Pi model.

One-click scans. No signup required.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. This is a capture service rather than the local baseline-and-diff script above, so you still need to decide how to retain and compare captures for monitoring.
