You give it a URL, choose the whole page or one part of it, set a check interval, and pick how you want to be alerted. The checks run on the service’s servers, so your computer and browser can be closed or switched off. Visualping and Distill both document this cloud mode. Distill’s local monitors work differently: they depend on your device and browser staying available.
Cloud or local: the deciding question
The main difference between monitoring tools is where the check runs. A cloud monitor sends its requests from the provider’s infrastructure, so the job continues whether or not you are at your computer. Visualping’s help centre states that its cloud monitors continue when the browser or computer is off (Visualping Help Center, “What is Visualping?”). Distill’s documentation says cloud checks run on its servers (Distill Documentation, “What is Distill?”).

If you need the check to keep running with the laptop closed, the choice narrows quickly:

Setting up a cloud monitor
- Copy the direct URL of the exact page or listing you care about. A search results page or a category page will usually produce noisier alerts than the item’s own page.
- Create a monitoring job in a cloud service. Visualping’s setup guide walks through creating a basic monitoring job (Visualping Help Center, “How to create a basic monitoring job.”). In Distill, choose a cloud monitor rather than a local one.
- Select the full page or a specific element, such as a price, a button, an image, or a block of text. The next section explains why this matters.
- Set a check interval that matches how quickly you need to know about a change.
- Choose what counts as a change. Visualping offers AI-based and non-AI change criteria. Distill supports optional conditions that you can attach to a monitor.
- Configure an alert channel and confirm your plan includes it.
- Review the first captures or alerts. If the page is slow or needs an action before the content appears, adjust the job as described below.
Check intervals set your detection delay
A cloud monitor cannot report a change before it checks the page. Visualping states that a check must happen before an alert can be sent (Visualping setup guide). In practice, a change made just after a check will not be seen until the next scheduled check, so the interval is roughly the longest delay you should expect.

A shorter interval gives faster detection but uses more of your plan’s monthly checks. Pick an interval based on how fast the information goes stale. A restock notice may justify frequent checks, while a policy page may need only a daily check. Check allowances differ by plan, so confirm the limits before you set an aggressive schedule.
Watch the element that matters
Whole-page monitoring is the simplest option, but it is also the noisiest. Ads, timestamps, rotating banners and comment counts can all trigger an alert even when the item you care about has not changed. Both Visualping and Distill support monitoring a selected area of a page, such as a price or a section of text (Distill extension guide). Selecting that area is usually the single most effective way to reduce false alerts.
Selecting a region also has a cost. If the page redesigns or moves the price to a different element, the monitor may keep watching an area that no longer holds the information. Check the first few alerts and captures after setup, and reselect the area if the layout changes.

Alerts and plan limits
Visualping enables email alerts by default and says other channels depend on your plan (Visualping Help Center). Distill documents email, SMS, push, Discord, Slack, Microsoft Teams and webhook-based notifications (Distill documentation). Which of these you can use, how many monitors you can run, and how often they check can change by plan, so verify the current limits on the service’s pricing or plan page before you rely on a particular channel.

- Slow-loading content. Visualping lets you configure a wait so the page finishes loading before the capture is taken.
- Content behind a click, scroll, or form. Visualping documents page actions such as clicking, scrolling, typing, and signing in. Set these up in the monitor so the check reaches the content you want.
- Dynamic pages in local mode. If you use the Distill extension in background mode, expect problems on pages with dynamic content. Switch to a cloud monitor or select a static area of the page.
- Blocked checks. A site can restrict automated access, in which case a check may fail or return a blocked page. Monitoring tools do not get around a site’s access controls, so a persistently blocked page will need another source, such as a feed or a notification the site provides.
Which tool to choose
Visualping

changedetection.io is open-source software you run yourself. It suits readers who already operate a server and want full control over the checks. It is not a hosted service with no upkeep. Your monitoring stops when your host stops, and the project’s GitHub page is the place to check installation options.

- A monitor detects changes only on the pages and elements it checks, at the times it checks them.
- Neither vendor’s documentation gives a detection-accuracy or false-alert rate, so treat alerts as a practical signal and confirm important changes at the source.
- Cloud monitoring does not bypass a website’s login requirements or access restrictions.
With those limits in mind, a cloud monitor on a well-chosen element, checked at an interval that matches your need, is the most reliable way to watch a page without leaving a browser open.
