There are two different ways to earn from music on YouTube: monetize eligible videos on your YouTube channel through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), or distribute recordings to YouTube Music through a digital aggregator. They have different eligibility rules, rights requirements and payment reporting. YouTube does not publish one universal amount it pays per music stream.
Choose the route that matches what you want to monetize

A music video uploaded to a channel and an audio release delivered to YouTube Music are not interchangeable. A channel video’s performance does not automatically establish how a distributed recording is reported, and YouTube Music listening should not be assumed to count toward a channel’s YPP public watch hours.

Monetize music videos through the YouTube Partner Program
Meet the full ad-revenue threshold
YouTube’s YPP overview, accessed October 3, 2026, lists two alternative thresholds for the full ad-revenue eligibility level: 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour threshold.

Reaching a threshold is not automatic approval. YouTube also requires the channel to follow program policies, be in a country or region where YPP is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, and complete the applicable account and AdSense requirements. You must apply and pass YouTube’s review, accept the relevant monetization terms, and enable available features in YouTube Studio.
Understand the earlier-access tier
In eligible regions, YouTube lists an earlier-access tier for selected fan-funding and Shopping features: 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 long-form watch hours in 365 days or 3 million public Shorts views in 90 days. This is a separate, lower tier; it is not the full ad-revenue threshold. Availability and requirements vary by feature, country and account, so check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for the options available to your channel.

Check the terms before relying on a threshold
As of October 3, 2026, YouTube’s YPP overview announces updated terms starting February 1, 2027, and says creators should accept them in Studio by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing. Program requirements and notices can change; check the current YPP page and your Studio account notices when applying.
Distribute audio releases to YouTube Music
YouTube says artists need audio files and metadata delivered through an aggregator for a recording to be fully published on YouTube Music. YouTube describes an aggregator as a company that distributes music to streaming platforms. Depending on the service, an aggregator may handle metadata, DDEX delivery, support and earnings reporting; it may charge a flat fee or retain a share of royalties.

- Confirm your rights. Make sure you control or have permission for the sound recording and all included compositions, performances, samples and other material. Agree who owns the recording and who is authorized to distribute it.
- Compare distributors. Review the services they deliver to, their fees or royalty share, rights administration, territory coverage, reporting detail, payout timing, support and requirements for releases. Read the current agreement rather than relying on a headline price.
- Prepare the release. Provide the audio and accurate metadata the distributor requests, such as artist and release details. Check spelling, credits and ownership information before delivery.
- Review delivery and reports. Confirm the release is delivered as expected, then use the distributor’s reporting and payment statements to understand earnings and deductions. Delivery, reporting and payout terms depend on that provider’s agreement.
TuneCore and DistroKid are examples of distribution services, not endorsements. Their own descriptions say they deliver music to YouTube Music or deliver releases as Art Tracks and report or collect service earnings. Verify each provider’s current pricing, eligibility, rights administration, territories and payout terms directly.
How much does YouTube pay per music stream?
There is no single reliable dollar-per-stream figure to use across YouTube channel videos and YouTube Music releases. The official pages reviewed do not state a universal current rate, and the two routes involve different systems. Video advertising earnings depend on factors such as monetization eligibility and the circumstances of the video and its viewers; YouTube Music earnings are reported through a distributor under its terms. Do not treat a distributor’s estimate or a creator’s reported result as a guaranteed platform-wide rate.

For a realistic estimate, use the reports for your own eligible channel or your distributor’s statements, and check what each figure includes and deducts. A useful comparison should separate video ad revenue from recording royalties and account for any distributor fee or royalty share, territory, reporting period and rights arrangements.
Clear rights before you upload or distribute
YouTube says creators are responsible for clearing audio and visual rights in videos they monetize. Third-party material, including unlicensed music, is not eligible for monetization. Having a song file or being the performer does not by itself prove that you control every right needed to monetize a recording or video.

- Keep written permission or license records for music, samples, compositions, footage, artwork and other material you did not create or do not own.
- Check that the license covers the format, territories and monetization use you intend. Permission to use a song in one video is not necessarily permission to distribute its recording as an audio release.
- Do not submit music to Content ID unless you have sufficient rights in the reference content. Content ID is a partner system, not an open self-service claiming tool for every artist.
- If a rights claim affects a video or release, review the claim and your documentation before disputing it. Do not make a dispute simply because you performed the song or believe that credit is sufficient.

Creator Music is a separate option for creators selecting catalog music for eligible videos; it is not a distribution route for your own release. YouTube’s cited guidance describes availability for U.S. creators in YPP, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. Track terms and territories vary, and rights holders may change them. Check the current terms for the specific track in Studio before using it.

The cited usage rules limit Creator Music tracks covered by this guidance to long-form videos, not Shorts or live streams. Shorts monetization follows separate rules. YouTube also says its standard 55% revenue share is adjusted to cover music rights costs when eligible tracks are used; it is not a guaranteed 55% creator take in those cases.
YouTube says paid Creator Music licenses were deprecated effective August 10, 2026, as the service transitions to gratis licenses. Existing licenses remain valid only for their term and cannot be renewed under the old terms. Because availability and terms are changing, confirm the live option and conditions in Studio before publishing.
