For Chrome or Edge, the most direct Selenium Java route is Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP): enable the Network domain and call Network.setExtraHTTPHeaders before navigating. WebDriver Classic has no general command for rewriting browser requests. WebDriver BiDi defines a standards-based network.setExtraHeaders command, but the documented Selenium Java Network module does not currently list a direct helper for it. Choose based on your browser and the protocol support in your Selenium version.
Choose the right way to set headers

Selenium describes CDP access as a temporary path while BiDi implementation continues. BiDi adds a WebSocket connection and is presented as the cross-browser replacement direction. The command specification and the Java wrapper are separate things: a command existing in the protocol does not guarantee a ready-made Selenium Java method.
Set persistent extra headers with CDP in Java
This example is for Chrome or Edge using Selenium Java’s DevTools support and the CDP version generated for your Selenium/browser combination. Selenium’s documented Java example uses Network.setExtraHTTPHeaders. Generated package names and APIs can vary with the CDP version, so use the matching version-specific imports from Selenium’s documentation rather than assuming one package works across releases.

driver.quit();The class names ChromeDriver, DevTools, Network, and Headers need their imports from Selenium and its generated CDP package for the CDP version in use. The token above is a non-secret example value; load real credentials from test configuration rather than embedding them in source code.
- Create the driver and DevTools session.
- Enable the Network domain before navigation.
- Set the extra headers, then navigate to the page whose browser-originated requests should carry them.
- Verify the request at a controlled test endpoint or server. Do not infer success only from the browser navigation completing.
This is a persistent extra-header setting, not a callback that inspects and rewrites each request individually. It is appropriate when the same header should accompany the relevant requests in the session. If the requirement is conditional per-request logic, use a supported interception mechanism instead; the extra-header command alone does not provide that callback behavior.

What BiDi supports—and what Selenium Java exposes
The WebDriver BiDi specification defines network.setExtraHeaders to extend or overwrite existing request headers. It is a persistent extra-header operation, not a general per-request rewrite callback. The inspected Selenium Java API documents its beta org.openqa.selenium.bidi.module.Network module and methods such as addIntercept, continueRequest, and continueResponse, but does not list a direct setExtraHeaders helper.
Selenium’s BiDi guide enables the WebSocket connection with options.setCapability("webSocketUrl", true). Enabling that capability alone does not establish that the Java wrapper provides the command you need. Before writing BiDi code, check the API for the precise Selenium Java version and the browser’s implementation. Do not present a raw protocol command as a stable public Java helper unless that release actually supports issuing it.

The W3C WebDriver BiDi Working Draft dated 2026-09-03 also notes a limitation involving workers associated with multiple navigables. If your test relies on worker-originated requests or context-specific behavior, confirm the applicable protocol behavior instead of assuming every request is covered identically.
Header behavior and safe handling
- Same-name headers are replaced. BiDi specifies that an extra header overwrites an existing value of the same name; it is not appended to the existing value.
- Headers are not cookies. Use the appropriate cookie API for cookie state. Adding a request header is not a substitute for setting browser cookies.
- Request and response headers differ. These mechanisms set outgoing request headers, not response headers returned by a server.
- Protect credentials. Keep authorization values in test configuration, avoid putting credentials in URLs, and do not print secret header values to logs.
- Use controlled verification. Confirm the received header on a test server or endpoint where you can inspect the request safely.
Troubleshooting
The CDP classes or method do not compile
The generated CDP package and command surface depend on the Selenium/browser protocol version. Check the CDP version supported by the Selenium Java release, use its matching generated imports, and align the browser version with that combination. Avoid copying imports from an example for another CDP version.

The server does not receive the header
Ensure Network is enabled and the extra-header command is sent before navigation. Verify the exact outgoing request on a controlled endpoint, and check that you are observing a request made by the browser rather than a separate client or a request that does not match the configured context.
A same-name header has an unexpected value
Extra headers replace an existing header with the same name rather than combining with it. Check for another source setting that header, then verify the final value received by the server.

BiDi code cannot call setExtraHeaders
The protocol defines the operation, but the documented Selenium Java Network module does not list a direct helper. Confirm support in the exact release and browser you use. If unavailable and you automate Chrome or Edge, use the documented CDP route where its version constraints are acceptable.
Only some requests or workers behave differently
Extra headers are not arbitrary per-request interception. Use a network interception feature for conditional request handling, and account for the BiDi specification’s noted worker limitation when multiple navigables are involved.
