Mix rain as a steady background and thunder as a quieter, less frequent layer. Overlap and crossfade the rain at its loop point, then monitor the finished output and keep its peaks below 0 dBFS to avoid digital clipping. There is no official sleep-stream ratio or loudness target: set the balance by listening, not by chasing a magic number.
Build the mix from separate rain and thunder tracks
Keep rain continuous and place thunder independently so you can control when it appears and how prominent it sounds. Choose recordings that suit the atmosphere you want; the right thunder frequency and rain-to-thunder balance are creative choices, not established technical standards.
You can assemble the tracks in a multitrack editor or mix sources in OBS. Adobe Audition is one documented example of an editor with clip fades and crossfades; it is not required. OBS can monitor sources and check output levels.
Make the rain loop seamless
- Find a suitable loop point. Listen for a portion of rain that can repeat without a sudden change in texture or loudness.
- Overlap the repeated clips. In a multitrack editor, place the next rain clip before the previous one ends.
- Crossfade the overlap. Fade one clip down as the other comes up, then adjust the overlap by ear. Adobe Audition’s documentation explains that the length of the overlap determines the crossfade duration.
- Check the transition in context. Listen at normal playback level across several repetitions. Adjust the overlap or choose a different loop point if you hear a bump, gap, or abrupt change. Apply fades at the beginning and end where appropriate.

Balance the rain and thunder without clipping
- Monitor the actual mix. In OBS, listen to the signal through a monitoring device while adjusting levels. Bring thunder in gradually and judge whether it interrupts the steady rain too sharply.
- Watch the output peaks. Keep the streamed output below 0 dBFS. OBS describes 0 dBFS as the digital maximum and warns that audio at or above it can clip in a stream or recording.
- Use peak hold for occasional thunder. A thunder transient can exceed the level suggested by the ongoing rain. OBS’s peak-hold meter can help reveal those brief peaks; do not treat a meter color as a sleep-audio loudness target.
- Record and listen back. OBS recommends making a recording and listening to it before going live. Check both the steady bed and the loudest thunder in the recording.
OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details lists -20 dBFS as its meter alignment level and -9 dBFS as its permitted maximum reference. These are OBS meter conventions and references, not prescribed targets for sleep ambience. OBS also notes that its audio processing uses floating-point calculations; that does not remove the need to keep the final output below the clipping ceiling.

Check stereo routing and playback
OBS defaults to stereo. Confirm that the intended mix is audible in both left and right channels. OBS explains that a mono source is heard in both channels, while stereo sources have separate left and right meters; check routing if a source sounds as though it is coming from only one side.
For a practical preflight, listen to the OBS recording or stream output on headphones and a small speaker or phone. This is an additional listening check, not a special OBS requirement. It can reveal a loop seam, missing channel, unexpectedly prominent thunder, or audio that is not reaching the output.

Use audio you have the right to stream
YouTube says that only music and sound effects from its Audio Library are known to YouTube to be copyright-safe on YouTube. Find and audition effects in YouTube Studio’s Audio Library. If an item has a Creative Commons license, copy the attribution text YouTube provides into the video description. See YouTube Help: Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library.
For recordings from elsewhere, check the specific license for your intended live stream and any archived replay, including whether attribution is required. A generic “royalty-free” label is not enough to establish those permissions: YouTube says it cannot vouch for royalty-free sources on other channels or libraries. The Audio Library’s stated copyright-safety scope is YouTube; it is not a blanket rights guarantee for external audio or off-platform use.

Preflight before going live
- Play through the rain loop several times and listen for gaps, clicks, or level changes at the seam.
- Listen for the loudest thunder peaks and check that the final output stays below 0 dBFS.
- Confirm the audio is present and both intended stereo channels are working.
- Record a short OBS test and listen to the recording before the live stream.
- Verify the license and attribution requirements for every recording in the mix.
