Start with USB; it avoids the extra network setup required for wireless mirroring.
Mirror Android to MacBook with scrcpy over USB
Scrcpy is an open-source utility from Genymobile. Its project documentation says it works with Android 5.0 (API 21) or later, requires no root access or scrcpy app installation on the phone, and supports screen mirroring and computer keyboard and mouse input. Standard use requires USB debugging. These are project-stated capabilities, not independent performance-test results.

- Install scrcpy on the Mac. Follow the project’s official macOS installation guide, which covers Homebrew and MacPorts. Use that guide for the current commands and release-specific requirements.
- Enable Developer options and USB debugging on Android. The exact menu labels and steps vary by phone maker and Android version. Scrcpy’s standard connection requires USB debugging.
- Connect the devices. Use a USB data cable that fits the phone and Mac. A cable that only charges the phone will not provide the data connection scrcpy needs.
- Launch scrcpy and authorize the Mac. Approve the USB debugging prompt on the phone if it appears. The scrcpy project documentation has the current usage details and troubleshooting guidance.
If the Mac does not detect the phone
- Check that the cable supports data, not just charging, and that it fits both devices’ ports.
- Unlock the phone and look for a USB debugging authorization prompt.
- Recheck that USB debugging is enabled, then consult scrcpy’s official troubleshooting guidance.
What you can do once it is connected
Scrcpy displays the Android screen on the Mac and supports keyboard and mouse control. Audio forwarding is supported when the phone runs Android 11 (API 30) or later; do not expect that feature on older Android versions.
Use wireless mirroring if you do not want a cable
Scrcpy also supports connections over TCP/IP. Wireless setup requires network or pairing steps, so it is not necessarily simpler than connecting over USB. Follow the project’s current instructions rather than assuming the phone and Mac will connect automatically.

Consider AirDroid Cast as a guided alternative
AirDroid’s Android-to-Mac guide describes using its desktop client to cast by QR code or cast code, over wireless or USB. It also describes desktop-client use when phone control is wanted. Those are vendor-described features; the guide does not establish current pricing, which features are free, or whether an account is required. Check AirDroid’s current terms before choosing it.

DeX is a desktop-style session, not simply the same thing as mirroring the phone screen. Samsung’s DeX compatibility FAQ describes support by Galaxy model and software version. Its listed cable or HDMI compatibility does not establish MacBook compatibility. The FAQ also says Linux and Chrome OS are unsupported and that DeX on PC is not supported for specified newer Galaxy devices or for devices updated to Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. Check Samsung’s current guidance for the exact phone and software version before relying on DeX.
